Virgin has been confirmed to have too small a fuel tank for race distance. They've submitted a request to the FIA to redesign their car to incorporate a bigger tank.

I've naturally put money on them not to be classified in Australia.

That's a disgrace.

And nowt to do with CFD or wind tunnels... That's just poor preparations surely?

That's hilarious... for us, anyway. It's a bit like preparing for a holiday, you've double checked every item in your inventory before you take the 4 hour drive to the airport and arrive at the check-in... oh, you left your passport behind.

Well that makes life difficult.

The Formula 1 top ten prediction game i run at work, has a new feature this year. The tail end charlie challenge, where you had to pick which one of the new teams would be the highest finisher. Thinking that Virgin might be faster but Lotus more reliable.

If Virgin can't even get to the end i have a problem. Because HRT are never going to finish anytime soon. that realy leave only lotus. I did put the option of none of them, but that's just Lotus not finishing now.

Arse.

Should i just scrap the feature or continue with lotus to finish or not ?

Pretty entertaining FP1. Kobayashi may have put Sauber out of the Aussie GP if they can't sort the front wing failure. McLaren's website is pretty great, they answered a few of my questions while the session was running.

Quick thought about the Virgin. Fuel economy is governed, to a point by aerodynamic drag, so could the CFD sums be an issue after all? That might be bollocks mind.

Excerpt from James Allen on F1:

It is strange that this should have happened. The fuel cells are an outsourced component and are produced for the team by a company called Premier. Most F1 teams use cells from ATL. Teams request cells of different sizes depending on their fuel consumption figures, but Cosworth, which powers Virgin as well as three other teams, will have been very specific with all its customers about the fuel required by its engine.

Good point on the drag, but I think no. Basically most of the time when the throttle is open it's open to the max.

On the road yeah you fix the speed (70 mph :)) so the variable that changes is fuel used. On the track though you fix the power used (fuel usage) to 100% and the variable that changes is speed instead.

If I was one of their sponsors I'd be pretty pissed off.

Wait a minute......

Actually I've been thinking about this. No wonder they've got hydraulic problems, I think the fuel system, pumps etc will all be hydraulically operated, when it's working againts nothing it's far more likely to get fucked up. That's a huge oversight, and bonding an extra section onto the car is madness. What's even more embarassing for them is that even on a low fuel load, they're shit!.

Lewis Hamilton has apologised for driving in an "over-exuberant manner" after he was stopped by Australian police on Friday.

The McLaren driver did a burnout and a fishtail in a Mercedes car along Lakeside Drive in Melbourne and as a result he was pulled over by police.

According to local media, Hamilton, whose car was impounded, will be fined and charged on summons with improper use of a vehicle.

The Briton said in a statement on Friday evening that he was sorry for what he considered to be a 'silly' mistake.

"This evening, I was driving in an over-exuberant manner and, as a result, was stopped by the police," said Hamilton.

"What I did was silly, and I want to apologise for it."

It wasn't his normal GL then, need pics.

A mate of mine used to work for Red Bull. Apparently the engineers in F1 are obsessed with hydraulics and want to use them for everything, even when there's a simpler, lighter, more reliable alternative.

Don't forget is the openign round of the ALMS race this weekend at Sebring. 12hours of proper racing.

If anyone is interested I was lucky enough to go to this race, There's a few hundred shots on my flickr including some excellent demonstrations of just how close you can get at Sebring. I have shots from the garage during the race as the team packed up the Autocon Lola that never started the race and shots of the Flying Lizard and Corvette cars being towed out of the pits so close to me I had to step out of the way.

I refuse to believe that doing burnouts in a powerful rear drive Merc is 'improper use of a vehicle'.

I agree - that's just how they 'launch' with 500lb/ft.

By fishtail, I presume they mean that thing where from a standstill, one ambles forward, locks the wheel fully to the side and then buries the throttle... Like a power-on handbrake turn, from static. They seem to always do them in F1, to compensate for their awful turning circle.

Anyway, good job Lewis - grab some personality by the ballz. He gets far more kudos from me by doing stuff like this than from going out with some bint.

Lucky guy! I watched a few clips of this on youTube and it looked awesome - there's so much more personality in the (GT2) cars than F1, while the racing looks so much more exciting. Mind you, it probably helps that there are twelve hours of racing condensed into four minutes of clips...

Personally, I prefer American commentators for the way they go bat-shit loco when anything exciting happens, but the British guy is cool.

Yeah, the GT2 battle had pretty much genuine parity on speed between Chevrolet, BMW, Porsche and Ferrari. In P1, other than a very spirited early run by the Drayson Lola, the Peugeots walked it in the absence of the Audis.

That said, I was right on the inside of that corner when Pirro made that move ;)

You jammy bastard. :)

It looked fantastic on the TV, the way Piro just slid it up the inside. Considering that Audi fired the guy for being too old and too slow, that was the pass of the season.

Did you see the Ferrari torch itself. That did look spectacular on TV as the rear end just exploded.
