The Red Bull team are demonstrating their car for this year outside Belfast City Hall at 8pm tonight for anyone who's interested. Apparently the council is expecting about 12,000 people to show up so I'd be worth your while to get there early.

That was great fun. Loved hearing a dozen nearby alarms all go off at once as DC accelerated away. :(

I wanted to watch the spectacle rather than watch my camera/phone, but a quick twitter search brings up loads of vids.

Also: Loved how people standing at a pedestrian crossing always pushed the button on each run for the obvious "Red light. Stop! LoL!" joke. But every-time they tried he was already zooming past by the time their finger was off the button. :D

And DC had some great quotes afterwards. [paraphrasing] 150mph? It would have been nice to get out of second gear! I turn 39 years old this week and frankly I struggle to see too far ahead in this light. [/paraphrasing]

We’re off to the Albert Park, in down town Melbourne, Australia. It’s a medium fast, temporary track. It’s got some sensible bits and some silly bits. Drivers need to be smooth here and not kiss the wall too often. It’ more forgiving than Monaca, faster too. But still need concentrations from the driver. Usually it’s the first race of the year so form is no guide here. New drivers in new cars can go well here as old hands get sloppy and over confident.

Can anything stop the march of Ferrari ?

Vettel may have bagged the pole in Bahrain but the Redbull, according to Ferrari, didn’t have the legs at the end. Redbull might argue about that, Vettel kept Nico behind him when the spark plug started working again after all. Webber once again talked a good race and didn’t supply anything of any interest. Redbull probably have the best one lap car, but will it prove to be as fragile as last years car. As Alonso cruise up to the chequered flag, Massa held station as rear gunner. If he’s to stop Alonso from taking over his head boy badge he need to dominate in Australia, not something he normally does. Alonso should win on form, Vettel will be better than Bahrain, Massa is wild when under pressure. Webber is on home soil and needs to make up ground on the leaders

Whilst Button failed to shine, Hamilton won the first round of the fight to be best Brit. The McLarens didn’t look to have the legs of Vettel or the two Ferraris. Hamilton was fast once he cleared Nico but their trick air wing thing didn’t look all that trick come the speed trap. Button needs to be good here on a circuit that should suit his smooth style. Hamilton for another podium probably, button to make the top 5.

Not looking too trick either was Heir Schumacher. Where was the spark , the daring do, the win at all cost? He drove off the line like he was in a women’s institutes all comers 20 yard pancake tossing dash. SOOOOOOO SLLOOOWWWWWLLLLYYYYY. He claims he’s rusty, but to clean up rusty you have to go out and practice practice practise. That’s not something you can do anymore and sitting in front of the 42“ plasma knackering the PS3 pad isn’t going to get him race ready now. Are we about to see Schumacher’s first mid table season ? I don’t think he’ll be any better in Australia, but this is the 7 times world champion (three years ago)

“leave it out son, he’s a facking hero sunbeam”

Nico Rosberg did a good job in Bahrain, showing Schumacher the way home and beating him through out the weekend. If he can continue that run of form he might just be remembered as more than the guy who Schumacher beats. He does well here usually, in rougher cars than a Brawn Merc. He’s fast and smooth and on a mission to beat the ex-best. A solid top 5 beckons

So that’s you’re top eight. Put them into some sort of order.

As to 9th and 10th,well that will probably come from either Williams or Force India. Barrichello is not the sort to get flustered and is racking up the miles to collect the pension. Sutil needs to start delivering the results. If any of the big boy’s trip up, then these two will be there. Liuzzi is also being talked up by those in the know. But he could hardly give me the time of day when I met him, so I don’t like him.

Sauber and Torro Rosso will be shit yet again.

As to those Tail End Charlies that proved so exciting last time out. Well Lotus has to be favourite to finish ahead of the others again. Though i think Virgin might get one to the flag this time. HRT will get both cars to pratice, neither will make it further than Q1 or half distance actually 1/3 distrance might be seen as a victory.

There will be more over taking this time out. I'm sure of it :)

I hadn't previously formed an opinion of Kubica, but reading that article has really made me really like the guy. His last answer couldn't really say "fuck off" any more clearly without using those exact words. I'll certainly be looking out for him for the rest of the season now anyway.

What's all this about some sort of Fantasy F1 as well? I only became aware of the new season starting during the week before the first race, so I've not really been keeping up with the recent news. Is it too late to enter, either in terms of a deadline passing or there being literally no point seeing as the season has already started?

The league is here: http://www.fantasyracers.com/

Not sure if it's too late to enter a team - give it a go though. Reckon you won't be too damaged missing one race - costs nowt to have a go anyway.

Once you've created the team, our league info is:

He got pretty close to the railings in that vid.

Yeah, looks like the marshal toward the right of frame nearly shat himself!

I don't know if it was supreme control or dumb luck that he didn't hit anyone. I was standing opposite and slightly to the right from the perspective of that vid - thought it best to pick a spot where he was going slow down - to see the most of him, and got to see him do doh-nuts at that end on a few runs, plus got my ears popped from the acceleration!

Basically the whole event made me feel guilty for being a big Hakkinen softie back in the day.

Thinking about how to improve F1. I'd make a suggestion that they get rid of all the engine/tyre/brake/drivers left bollock temperature monitoring that goes on. Sure do it during pre-season testing, but race time? Fuck off.

I imagine they wouldn't like to do that on safety grounds, for warnings such as the brakes being about to self-destruct if they're starting to get too hot.

But unforeseen failures such as that would certainly be one way to make the races more interesting. They really do need to find a way of scrapping the engine limit while keeping costs down though, as mentioned previously, that's a major issue in regards to teams not pushing the cars to their limits.

I know/assume the engines are expensive, but supplying the parts shouldn't be beyond the budgets of the teams. By all means limit the development costs, but if a team can barely afford to build a car then tought luck.

Gotta love the Aussies, grid girls not raunchy enough. ^_^

Those outfits are AWFUL.

The grid girls thing I have found a bit.... tasteless? Formula One is a sport for everyone really, and having a lass holding a sign while wearing a bikini is hardly the height of sophistication and glamour that the pinnacle of motor racing claims to be.

That said, if they are going to be there they may as well be wearing something better than those stupid outfits...

Erm.........ok. If I was racing and some scantily clad lady wanted to stand in front of me holding a flag/umbrella/sign as I bombed down to the first corner, I'd be quite pleased that it might be one of the last images to flash through my skull before someones car did exactly the same thing.

I wonder how many fans f1 is going to lose by having the first track as a dull spectacle and the second track at a stupid time for the majority of the world (Europe)

Remember that though the race starts at a reasonable 8am here in the UK, the hour will have changed so it will feel like 7! (BBC program probably starts 50 minutes before the race start)

I find qualifying more interesting than the race (this year so far at least) and I watch it live as otherwise some twats in the media always add spoilers in the most unlikely of places.

Formula 1

Saturday 27 March

5:00am - 7:30am

BBC1

Qualifying

Dunno if its worth going to sleep on Friday as 5am is far too early, why couldn't they put it on at midday gmt?

The only driver who should get a grid girl is the pole man. Everyone else should get some fat slob to stand in front of their car. If that doesn't increase their desire to be on pole nothing will!

We could extend that to solve the overtaking problem, number of grid girls a driver gets depends on the number of overtakes they made in the previous race.

Its quite amusing seeing the lack of health and safety back in the day, I don't think there are any f1 drivers who smoke any more :) iirc kimi raikkonen was the last f1 driver who smoked in public.

On a related note, check out this driver smoking on a safety lap :)
