The Formula 1 Thread

Anybody read the BBC interview with Kubica? It's really quite refreshing, he doesn't babble in response to fluff questions and comes across as quite sane. Some samples...

Q: If I was in charge of Formula 1 you would…

A: I don't know

Q: Which F1 driver tells the worst jokes?

A: I don't know.

Q: Describe yourself in a few words.

A: I don't like to speak about myself so it's better if you ask somebody else that question.

Q: What is the biggest perk of the job?

A: Driving.

Q: Who is the worst dressed Formula 1 driver?

A: I don't know. I don't care. Maybe me, maybe not.

Q: How would you like to be remembered as an F1 driver?

A: I don't care.

Q: Ayrton Senna or Alain Prost?

A: Both of them were great drivers. I don't have a preference.

Q: Apart from a house what is the most expensive thing that you own?

A: No comment.

Q:Tell us something about yourself that most F1 fans might not know

A: In F1 there are so many media so there is practically nothing about me you cannot find in the media.

Definately rooting for him this year. :)

I'm sure his sponsors will love that attitude with one of the biggest f1 markets in the world...

In their position, I'd smile and laugh and give totally ridiculous answers to anything I didn't fancy answering. At least then you'd be seen as a bit of a joker rather than a complete prick.

I don't see why drivers have to placate the media, their job is to drive not suck corporate cock.

But the reality is that most of the drivers on the grid would not be there without some form of personal sponsorship that they bring to the team. The "rent-a-drivers" at the back are the worst, but all of them are beholden to corporations for the money that lets them drive...

On the contrary, driving is about 30% of their role.

He is being paid megabucks in a time of world recession to be a driver & ambassador for Renault. Like a head of state or a member of the Royals wherever he goes, whatever he does, whatever he says either to the press or public he has a responsibility to conduct himself properly. And that means giving proper answers to the press. Comes with the territory. If he doesn't like it, then he sure did pick the wrong job.

It just increase the perception that he's a whiny dullard with no sense of humour who whinges when he doesn't get what he wants. Talking to the press is a huge part of the job. Okay i don't want corporate spin anymore than "these are stupid questions, fuck off wasting my time" but a little bit of "yeah, it's great being a drivber and i love it becasue .... etc" would go down well with most punters. Who ultimatly pay his wages afterall.

Are people going to buy Kubica T-shirts if all it says on it is:

Q: What is the biggest perk of the job?

A: Driving.

Actually that might be quite cool. But really It's not selling the team Kubica brand to well is it ?

When F1 is trying to expand it's market even further into even more casual audiences, what is a proper question?

Alright, I take your point. It's difficult to define what a 'proper' question is.

That said...

"What is your favourite item of clothing?"

"Which famous person - dead or alive - would you like to have dinner with and why?"

"What is your favourite song and what does it remind you of?"

are clearly shite, no?

I have no interest in any of those answers when they come from Robert Kubica. No doubt. Someone might though, a Renault fan or something...

Actual news!

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/motorsport...one/8577219.stm

Motorsport's governing body, the FIA, has set an April deadline for new teams wanting to join Formula 1 in 2011 and laid out criteria for them to fulfil.

USF1 were awarded an entry this season but will now have to submit a new entry after failing to be ready in time.

The FIA has set out the following selection criteria for new teams wishing to join the championship:

i) the technical ability and resources of the team

ii) the ability of the team to raise and maintain sufficient funding to allow participation

iii) the team's experience and human resources

iv) the FIA's assessment of the value that the candidate may bring to the championship as a whole.

Just stuff here and there, various visits by the motorsport media to the factory that had a very little happening. The interview with Lopez where he rants that he got stiffed by USF1 is quite damning. He signed on the dotted line before seeing a car. Then realized it was all going wrong when he turned up to find no car or even full plans for a car. snippets here and there really. Give the impression that it had all gone wrong for Windors and co before christmas. Pretty much the point when all the Press releases stopped and it all went quite around the team.

lopez rant

As soon as I arrived in Charlotte in February, I realised that everything they were saying was not true.
