Really enjoyed that, good to have my F1 fix back again. At the moment it looks a lot like Mercedes didn't bring anything special car-wise, for me it looks like a fight between Vettel, Alonso and Hamilton for the championship, I guess it's wrong to write off Massa after he just came 2nd, but I just don't think he'll have the legs across the entire season.

Will be interesting to see how the rest of the season plays out pit stop wise. If it settles into a routine of just one stop each about 1/3rd of the way through it's going to get quite dull.

No thanks. I think Alonso had the pace to catch Vettel in the latter stages without that exhaust problem. We need to give this a few races. I liked it. No fuel stops to cloud things over. I've had visitors during the race so I've not been able to pay full attention, but there was some overtaking, mechanical failures etc. An interesting race rather than a thriller. It needs time to develop IMO.

Maybe. Things only got interesting when Vettel started losing ground to the Ferrari's, and I think apparently because of the cracked exhaust (we'll wait for the press conference for the confirmation). He gradually lost speed over the laps.

I watched the whole race, but it feels a bit like two wasted hours, especially for the opening race. In large part due to the fact that they were racing in a boring sandbox, so we'll see what happens of the next few races.

Still, I think refueling added an excellent extra layer of strategy. The fact that the first 15 cars were all doing laps within a second of 2:00:00 may sound like close racing, but in reality most of the racers were to far apart for some proper battling.

Is anyone thinking that these "cheaper, longer" units are killing off the pure competitiveness of the sport? Instead of flat out racing, the drivers are thinking about saving the engine, gearbox for the next 2/3 races, or the tyres for this race - they interviewed Kobayashi and he said both Saubers had to retire so they wouldn't incur a grid penalty for the next race. WTF? It's like Gordon Brown's "Prudence" rubbish all over

This really annoys me as well. Lack of overtaking is a problem so need to come up with ideas to improve it, then go and ruin it by telling the drivers they need manage the engines which means taking it easy at times.

Great to see Alonso finally in the car and getting the win as well, should be a much better season than last. Good performance by Lotus, had the shortest time of the new teams to prepare and the only one to get a car home and very nearly both of them.

It's quick, the fantasy league has been updated. Curse you Sauber, conning us with your testing. :(

I'm screwed for the rest of the season. I chose strategy 2, but they've changed the price tags on the drivers depending on this race's positions - Rosberg more expensive than Schumacher.

Ah, the minder is now with Rosberg. Bless her cuteness

I didn't realise they'd be revaluing them by quite as much/as quickly (I'm on strategy 1). I was torn between Schumacher and Alonso for the first race, but took a punt on the former. Now I'm thinking it would be an idea to switch to Alonso but there's suddenly a £1.9m gap between them!

1. Vettel

2. Alonso

This is where I was supposed to come in and act all smug. Damn Red Bull reliability.

Enjoyed the race (it's impossible not to with the excitement of the first weekend) but I do think all this management of the car and full tanks of fuel could get in the way of pure racing.

Sounds like McLaren still have some learning to do with Button, hopefully he can come good.

Quite interesting watching the forum, drivers and especially Whitmarsh are commenting on it not being very exciting. Whitmarsh was quite clear that it's not working and things need to be changed, maybe introducing mandatory 2 stops, pushing Bridgestone to be more aggressive with the tyres. Hopefully they will do something and not just talk about it.

After that it's obvious that a soft tyre should barely make 1/3 distance but how quickly can Bridgestone produce a batch of new compound tyres? We could be stuck with this until Monaco or something.

How many types of dry tyre are there? Four? I think we got the Super soft and the Medium there thanks to the tradition of skipping a grade everywhere bar Monaco, but they could easily relax that and let them run the Soft instead of changing what Super Soft is.

There's 4. The problem was that they ran the super soft and it coped really well, Hamilton came in early due to track position not anything to do with tyre degradation. I doubt super soft and soft would make much difference if any to how many stops needed. I never liked the tyre wars before but they probably would be quite good now, won't see them back any time soon though. The teams did know that this could be a problem and discussed before the season making it mandatory to stop twice, but as expected if you've got a tyre wear advantage you're not going to vote to give it away, hopefully the reaction will force a rethink.

How dull.

Next!

I watched the first half of the race but then got bored and went outside. I fear that even cricket may be more exciting than this.

I think my brain has been conditioned to find the sound of F1 cars soothing though. It's a nice comforting sound to have on in the back ground.

Schumacher agrees: http://f1.gpupdate.net/en/formula-1-news/2...ays-schumacher/

I really think the FIA blows it by forbidding refueling. Although I haven't actively followed the racing before 1994, I think it added an exciting extra layer of strategy. Perhaps they're now trying to make races less depending on pit stops, or to improve safety, or even to make life harder on master strategist Brawn, but boo for the restriction overall.

The new points system will have to prove itself over the following races. I'm not too keen on the idea that it's now possible to get a huge lead by winning the first few races, if only for the idea. (On the other hand: if they multiply the current system by 4, we're getting pretty close to F-Zero (G)X :()

I was looking forward to the refueling ban, but today it came down to talk of pit stops for positions again. I wouldn't be surprised to see it end up with pit stop windows as we had before with the only difference being they're shorter. It does seem to need something to mix it up, maybe get Bridgestone to be more aggressive with the tyres, do drivers go all out more pit stops or try and hold on to them with fewer stops, could make tight circuits like Monaco more exciting.

I like the change to the point system and has been something I've wanted for a while but it shows the contradiction in the rules. We want to make drivers push right to the end and go for the positions, but don't forget you've only got 8 engines and push today you'll have less performance next race or you'll be penalized for going through too many.

My efforts in the league were disastrous :( I thought I'd go for as many lower priced drivers as possible, thinking they may go up in value so would be able to catch up with the people with £45m. As it happened, I ended up losing £0.5m! Bum.

And the race was rubbish too - what a massive let down given all the build up and anticipation! They must do something to improve the show, surely.
