Is there any other sport that has such a strange attitude to new teams as F1? I can't think of any. Maybe it would be better to let the dust settle and give USF1 help to make the grid in 2011, rather than ridicule them for failing to make races in 2010...

If Ferrari was one of your extended family members they'd be the rich, borderline racist uncle who pops up at family functions half cut, convinces your gran to sign over the entire family estate to him because he's 'special', bullies the younger siblings while harking on about 'the good old days', whilst incoherently ranting about how amazing they are and how awful everything and everyone else is.

To some extent Ferrari do have a point. Mosley's posturing over the new Conchord Agreement almost led to the breakaway, and it's that legacy which has made it difficult (or nigh on impossible) for the new teams to reach the grid in a competitive state.

USF1 were in way before BMW and Toyota descided to quite though. They went because they were a the back of the grid and couldn't justify spending a gazillion dollars to move up 3 places. With markets hitting rock bottom they could get better bang for their bucks in ALMS, touring car, LMS and even NASCAR. So Max may well have been mad, but he didn't drive the manufactures away. They were going to go and he knew he needed to have teams ready to plug the holes left.

The fact that he choose Campos and USF1 over Lola and Prodrive showes he was mad and the system was fucked. But I think he had the long term future of the sport in mind. Despite what Ferrari say, they needed new blood in the sport. Because the manufacturers couldn't justify the expenditure for much longer.

Manufacturer teams will come and go as their markets and marketing budgets rise and fall. The sport needs some entrants whose business is purely racing, they won't come and go. Admittedly, Campos and USF1 aren't particularly good examples of these however.

Exactly. The manufacturer era was a bubble, they all knew it. If they did nothing, the future of F1 could become compromised. Not exactly sure they went about things the right way, (tbh, they blatently didn't) but they had the right intentions. For once.
