The Formula 1 Thread

Word on the street is that Red Bull don't want the other constructors to see their car yet. Apparently everyone is copying last year's Red Bull design.

I'm assuming the FIA have sealed shut the door on the rear diffusers this time round, and that pretty much makes last year's red bull the best car overall

Not surprising if that's one of the reasons with RBR, I've read that the Ferrari at least will have a nose like last years RBR.

DDD are in this year, will at least be a level playing field this time though, everyone able to design their car around them. They will be banned next season though, of course the sensible thing would have been to ban them last year for this years rules, but sensible and F1...

Doesn't look good, looked at BBC coverage and they say it'll be on BBC 1 (no mention of BBC HD)

I'm still buying a projector for it. I got a shit old one last year to watch one of the far east races on, in car views look amazing.

It's a bit of a ball ache. Most of the new circuits since 99 (Malaysia onwards basically) are broadcast by FOM but all the old boys still do their own broadcasting. I imagine most countries are pretty much up to speed with HD but there's still a couple that are miles behind. I mean for crying out loud, in Brazil the on board camera footage is actually downgraded in quality so there isn't a noticeable big jump in image quality when the feed switches from trackside to on board!!

I got a projector recently for my basement games room. No TV aerial socket though ;) Reckon the quality would be decent enough to view online using the PS3 browser? Or would that just look shit?

Wow, where do you start on the stupidity of it, unless the shortcut goes from Montreal to Silverstone of course. I'd like to think he's not being serious but it's Bernie. If we're going to ruin racing lets find ways to do it properly, how about cars have a paint gun fitted in the nose cone with five paint balls, hit a small target on the back and you get to overtake. Now to be safe in the corners you need to get the back out, imagine it, power slides around Lowes, best copyright that one before Bernie sees it.

This winter has been so boring, can't wait for the testing to start.

I actually like the idea :) I might change my mind if I reflect on it a while, but I like the psychological element it introduces, the driver behind could dummy to suggest he's going to take it, causing the driver in front to defend and take the shortcut, then the follower could go round as normal with the leader having "lost a life".

I've sometimes thought in the past that splitting the track in two at some point might be a good idea; a straight splits off in two directions, with each having maybe a couple of chicanes that mirrors the other half, then rejoins before the next corner. Dismissed it as too ridiculous to ever bring up in here though!

Apart from the idea being shit, it could be mega fucking dangerous to have cars randomly joining the track. OK, there's the pit lane but the white line is there for added safety.

You'd divide the track in two by white line as you say, no real danger in that.

Guys, I think he's taking the piss with the journalist interviewing him.

When I say think, I mean I'm 100% sure he is...

That seems to be based on common sense and rational thinking, not sure they go together with F1 and Bernie.

A few dates for car launches have been announced now:

Mercedes GP: 25th Jan

Ferrari: 28th Jan

McLaren: 29th Jan

Renault and BMW Sauber: 31st Jan

Lotus: 12th Feb

You forgot to mention USF1.

That's because I'm a lazy European who isn't in need of a new toaster. Their debut should be sometime early next month, they've been given permission to have their first tests in the US at Barber Motorsports Park, which looks like a nice track actually. What they have launched recently is new website, which looks about as professional as they seem in the videos on the site.

Because of course all the drivers obey the white lines 100%... :)

The worst bit is the suggestion that each driver could use it a set number of times per lap. Yeah right, first time a Mclaren looked like winning the stewards would find an "irregularity" with the shortcuts taken by the driver.

I'd much rather they bought in A1GP style turbo boosts.
