I dunno if this is a well known story, or whether it has any impact anyway, but it looks like Williams may have a Cosworth engine next year. The husband of a girl I know works there, and he met Frank Williams when he came down to meet with them. She said it was all a bit 'hush hush', but I have no idea if this has any resonance.

There's no may, they announced that ages ago.

Actually just noticed.

"They are 50 miles away from Williams which is very convenient. Besides we also like our independence. We will be not under the influence, not that Toyota ever bossed around, but we've just gone a private and independent route."

Yes Frank, Kazuki Nakajima was hired only on speed and him leaving at the same time as Toyota is complete coincidence.

The McLaren thing was coming from the point McLaren wanted to be a proper car manufacturer and announced a competitor car to Mercedes own products. They can't be too close partners in that situation.

And now things start to get interesting for the winter, all seemed to have gone quiet for a while. Could get interesting in the driver market now, if Mercedes go for Heidfeld (fingers crossed) then means one top seat left and two top drivers going for it with Button and Kimi. I wonder if Kimi doesn't get it we could see RBR drop Webber come in for him as was rumoured earlier in the season, they could probably get him for a Magnum or a toaster now if he really wants to carry on in F1. It is surprising that the McLaren engine deal seems to have been extended, as there was supposedly only 2 years left, wonder if that puts paid to the idea of them becoming a full constructor soon.

Wonder what livery McLaren will use now, if they'll go for the orange or just another bland red and white car for Vodafone and Abbey. I hope the Merc looks like what I assume is a mock up on the Autosport site, that's really nice.

Why on Earth would Mercedes want a Rosberg/Heidfeld driver combo? It's taking the nationalism thing a bit too far when they won't win anything.

I mean, sure, Rosberg has a bit of skill, but Heidfeld is even more of a number 2 than Barrichello was. It's like McLaren deciding to be all UK-centric by pairing... say... Button with Anthony Davidson. Just makes no sense.

Well, they've gone from being a works team to a customer team that has to pay for engines. So yeah, pretty bad.

Heh, maybe in six years time Honda will return with an amazing engine and we'll have McLaren Hondas dominating the sport again!

McLaren get free engines for the next six years.

Button would be a fool not to remain in the same team. Merc can afford to pay him what he wants and with their backing, the future of the team is sure to be successful.

Yeah. Yesterday it was a case of it "Brawn aren't likely to have the top car again, but I can't see him beating Hamilton in identical machines...". Today it's all turned on its head and the Ross Brawn/Mercedes money combo makes staying put his most promising option.

Grand Prix Legends have just sent out a rather hasty email offering cheap Brawn merchandise and free shipping etc. "please buy all our stock that's now useless"!

On a similar note, I see McLaren have slashed the prices of their gear too (and they do "proper team shirts" too, rather than the cotton t-shirts with the same basic design like most teams).

I'd been tempted by one of these all season (though I guess there'll be a new one out soon :P ) :

No. They don't. They are paying Mercedes for them from 2011 (potentially even from the start of 2010 but def from 2011 at least). So put that in your pipe and smoke it! :P

They are, for all intense and purpose, now a customer team.

Although I suspect we will see them slowly morph into a manufacturer team in their own right over the next six years as they ramp up their road car production, quite probably producing their own engines in 2016. I would imagine their goal is to be the English Ferrari.

I'm only repeating what was said in the BBC report.

As part of a deal that will see the McLaren Group buy back Mercedes's 40% shareholding by 2011, the German company will continue to supply free engines and sponsorship to the team for at least the next six years.

Still a bargain for washing the car at the weekend

That's a great price, and it's quite understated- for an F1 t-shirt. I wish I had never thrown out my Schumacher Ferrari one from a few years ago.... it was also quite understated. For a Ferrari shirt.

Well there's a shocker, BBC reporting bollocks yet again.

Either seems plausible I suppose* (the buy back deal could include anything, and I doubt many people have seen the fine details).

*unless there's been an official announcment

Dieter Zetsch confirmed it that they will supply engines to McLaren for "a price" up to 2015 yesterday.

It does look more and more likely Button will move- but reading that Guardian article, Hamilton is on £12m per year? If Button does move, and if he does manage to outperform Hamilton, I wonder how long it is until McLaren start looking at downgrading that salary?

Although if it is only £6m he's moving for, I'm sure Mercedes could easily match that- so maybe Button is genuinely moving because of his fears that it won't be a competitive car. Of maybe he just wants one of those McLaren road cars, instead of a Mercedes (well, I suppose both are a bit better than a Honda Civic... )

It will be seriously interesting to see how Hamilton reacts to the move (if it happens), what with Alonso being at Ferrari both of those teams could potentially self destruct next year due to their own drivers competing with each other! Fantastic.. it's like the 80s/90s all over again!!

On the other hand, as an all-British team with two former world champions it'd probably be easier for McLaren to get lucrative sponsorship deals.
