(BBC News) F1 'war' on car makers - Ferrari

Ferrari has said that those in charge of Formula 1 have "waged war" against the major car manufacturers, leading to the withdrawal of several teams.

Toyota quit the sport on Wednesday, following the loss of Honda and BMW, while Renault are also considering their future in F1.

The Ferrari statement comes soon after a change of leadership at the sport's governing body, the FIA. Max Mosley will be replaced by ex-Ferrari boss Jean Todt as president.

In a statement released on its website, Ferrari compared the sport to the Agatha Christie detective novel 'Ten Little Indians' in which the murderer is not exposed until after the other characters have been killed off. The statement read: "It could be seen as a parody of "Ten Little Indians," the detective novel by Agatha Christie, first published in England back in 1939, but the reality is much more serious.

"Formula 1 continues to lose major players: in the past 12 months, Honda, BMW, Bridgestone and Toyota, have announced they are leaving the sport.

"In exchange, so to speak, we will now have, Manor, Lotus (at least in name only, as this incarnation has little to do with the team that gave us Colin Chapman, Jim Clark and Ayrton Senna to name but a few,) USF1 and Campos Meta.

"Can we claim that it's a case of like for like, just because the numbers sitting around the table are the same? Hardly and we must also wait and see just how many of them will really be there on the grid for the first race of next season in Bahrain and how many will still be there at the end of 2010.

"The reality is that this gradual defection from the F1 fold has more to do with a war waged against the major car manufacturers by those who managed Formula 1 over the past few years, than the result of any economic crisis.

"In Christie's work of fiction, the guilty party was only uncovered when all the other characters died, one after the other. Do we want to wait for this to happen or do we want to pen a different ending to the book on Formula 1?"

Renault held an emergency board meeting on Wednesday to discuss their future in the sport. The French car manufacturer is considering whether to remain in the sport with its own team, switch to simply being an engine supplier or quit altogether.

I find that spectacularly hard to believe.

FFS.

Meanwhile Red Bull have to sit and twiddle their thumbs while they wait to see if they will be using Renault Engines next year. Although I suppose switching engines at the least minute didn't do Brawn any harm!

Renault delays decision on F1 future

By Pablo Elizalde Thursday, November 5th 2009, 14:36 GMT

Renault will make a decision on its participation in Formula 1 in the future before the end of 2009, the French car maker said on Thursday.

On the same day Toyota announced it is quitting the sport with immediate effect, Renault held an extraordinary board meeting to discuss its future plans, amid reports that it could also leave grand prix racing.

On Thursday, Renault Chief Executive Carlos Ghosn did not clear any doubts about the French manufacturer's future involvement, just stating that Renault will make a decision before the end of the year.

"You will have to be patient," Ghosn was quoted as saying by the Reuters news agency as telling reporters in Paris.

"We will make an announcement on our participation in Formula 1 before the end of the year."

Renault is the only manufacturer team left in Formula 1 following the exits of Honda, BMW and Toyota in the last 12 months.

I also like how Autosport seem to have forgotten that Ferrari exist.

I find that spectacularly hard to believe.

I am slowly losing my respect for Ferrari since the dream team left. Now we have spaghetti culture.

Luca is not a racer or an engineer, he is a politician.

I can see Alonso kicking off, big style, if they don't start getting their act together.

Kimi is well out of it. They were favouring Massa like crazy.

If Renalut did go combined with the talk of Dave Richards wanting in to F1 still... Makes a hell of a lot of sense. Youknowwhatimsayin?

Location is good, team good to build on... Who knows.

He was there just after Flav left for talks.

A Prodrive Renault would not suprise me at all.

If Red Bull would have been on a Mercedes engine, they would have won the championship this year... surely they're gonna switch

Any ideas/rumours where Christian Klien might end up? Last thing I've heart was that he's got a good chance on a cockpit in the new Lotus team. Although if Sauber gets a spot for next year he might stay there.

Did i read that Mclaren are due to review the contract with Mercedes by 2012? if that's the case I don't see what the big deal is, surely they'd just go to Mclaren illmor power?

Ilmor is iirc owned 100% by Mercedes.

Mercedes and McLaren are getting a divorce.

McLaren have a road car coming out with their own engine.

For F1 they could easily buy out the existing Toyota or BMW engine facilities.

Mercedes own iirc 40% of McLaren F1. Ron is getting his Arab friends to buy this.

Which is reckoned to be why he was in Abu Dhabi last weekend.

*cough*

Ilmor Engineering

In 2005, Mario Illien and Roger Penske concluded a deal to purchase the small Special Projects part of the company, (which since 2003 had been contracted to design and build Honda's IndyCar Series engines) and split away to become a separate company.

This new company, which is totally independent of Mercedes, is once again known as Ilmor Engineering Ltd. The new Ilmor continues to support Honda's involvement in the IRL as sole engine supplier.

It could happen with ease.

Turnip LOL!

I'm damn well looking forward to next season if it will have no manufacturer teams. Proper garden shed F1 racing makes a comeback! :)

The trouble is that you've still got two teams with a massive budget- McLaren and Ferrari (who, I suppose you could say are also manufacturers.. well, it might be stretching it a bit with McLaren.. ;-) ). Although ol' Max has reduced budget greatly they are two teams who can just throw resources (and money) at anything. You could even throw Red Bull into that mix- again they've got a lot of money available.

I just hope it doesn't end up with another decade of Ferrari and McLaren duking it out. Maybe Mercedes getting out of the McLaren relationship will change things up a bit.. but I doubt it.

I like the bit in the BBC article

Ferrari compared the sport to the Agatha Christie detective novel 'Ten Little Indians' in which the murderer is not exposed until after the other characters have been killed off.

And which is the car manufacturer which is left? Hmmm...

I think Brawn and Redbull will be chasing Hamilton and Alonso.

Brawn and redbull will be the new BMW and Renault of the last few years, best of the rest.

top table: Mclaren, Ferrari

upper 5th table: Brawn, Redbull, Force India,

Lower oiks: Renault, Torro Rosso, Williams.

Scum: Lotus, Campos, Virgin (Manor)

Utter Rubbish : BMW

If they turn up will be shit until they fold after 4 races: the Americans.

Unknown: Whoever buys the Toyota shower of fail - unless it's Dave Richards who is ace and will save the world and cure cancer all in the same year.

Peugeot will still win Le Mans

Now let me see, was it the Mclaren Peugeot not so long ago that had a nasty habbit of trying really hard to push it's pistons through the casings of the engine? It was pretty bloody good at it too........

Toyota doesn't want to sell the team. Sauber is in then for next season i guess.
