The Formula 1 Thread

Everything you see there, the wing, the nose and the sidepods, looks very generic.

Presumably a whole pile of supercomputers doing CFD non stop for 18 months with all the teams has found the optimum shape for this generation of rules. So next year all the cars will look the same.

We started the season with a needle nose on the Red Bull and a super wide nose on the Renault. They have now converged to, presumably, the optimum width.

Likewise Ferrari started the season with wing mirrors on th top of vertical wings and now everyone has copied them.

This, it looks incredibly dull bar the sidepods which have larger than what I percieve to be normal extensions on the floorpan. Out of the new teams I do expect USF to come up with something and of course Lotus. Unless Manor and campos play a card before christmas I'd think it'll happen.

Trulli as a driver? is he doing it for nothing? even then it's too much.

I was watching Senna in Brazil from 94 last night. I didn't realise he'd completed so many laps before spinning out. I reckon he'd still be racing now you know.

The GP is sold out which is amazing when you see all those grandstands and look where it is in the world.

I went to a sold out Bahrain GP in 2008. The stand I was in remained near empty except for the middle third of the GP.

So I wouldn't put stock they've been sold to anyone who gives a shit just yet.

Manor will be interesting. They are not using wind tunnels!

They are trying to do it just using CFD.

It is worth noting, on a similar vein, that Fiat don't use car prototypes any more for their road cars, they go straight from CAD to production. And it works.

This saves them many millions and many months with each new car design.

Massa gets his relationship with his new team mate off to a good start:

"Massa spoke to Brazilian media during a get-together in Sao Paulo on Wednesday and, during the lunch, he said he was in no doubt that Alonso had to have been aware of the plans for Nelson Piquet to crash deliberately in the Singapore event last year to try and help him win."

It's absolutely stunning. I cannot believe he said it. Alonso will be f-ing fuming! Probably in Luca's office right now demanding his head.

"What is certain is that this episode will not mar in any way the relationship I'll have with Fernando when we will be team-mates."

Oh dear sonny, your in for a world of pain.

Well, there's 13 teams so 26 cars. Potentially 28 if the teams agree to let BMW Sauber back in. Although the first request was denied.

The limit appears to be the pits at Monaco which can only take 26 cars.

The only way round this, other than demolishing a few buildings, is to move the FIA into an already crowded paddock.

In times past, when anyone could turn up and race, they had pre qualifying and the 107% rule.

It would have to be more like 101% these days!!

With the high number of untested teams potentially joining next season I'm wondering if we'll start to see some sort of 107% style rule in the mix.

Any questions?

Can we do this in a seperate thread, and save this one for Formula 1 discussion?

That pit exit is fucking crazy!

edit: After watching it all, the circuit looks like it was designed for a game, more than racing. Very strange layout, just showing of all the nice buildings they've built

This. Pit complex looks mental indeed, but that'll make it interesting. The track itself seems to have a lot of runoffs, so I'm curious what the actual F1-style course will look like.

Although a bit different, still a typical Tilke track though. When will some other track designers pop up?

Nah, they already had a great start way earlier on:
