After the 5 place penalties the grid looks like this. Raikkonen & Kovaleinen both being heavy and with win buttons look quite good as long as they don't get screwed by a safety car at the wrong time.

1. Vettel

2. Trulli

3. Hamilton

4. Heidfeld

5. Raikkonen

6. Kovaleinen

7. Rosberg

8. kubica

9. Sutil

10. Barrichello

11. Glock

12. Button

13. Alguesuari

14. Fisichella

15. Buemi

16. Nakajima

17. Alonso

18. Grosjean

19. Liuzzi

20. Webber

What the hell classifies as an unsafe car?

We made the same calculations and came up with the same result so it should be good.

In this case an unsafe car is one with no front wing, sidepods and floor scraped to hell and dropping carbon fibre everywhere and a couple of wonky wheels with broken spinners. I don't think it helped Buemi that he was driving slowly through 130R which is fairly blind and definitely flat which could have caused a massive accident if anyone collected him. He wasn't even staying on the run-off area but kept it on the race track.

Im not sure, but you could be going out on a limb on that way of thinking :)

Kovaleinan has apparently changed his gearbox too and will now start 13th. Think I will wait until 5am before trying to work out who starts where.

If that's the case it'll put Rubi and JB back on the clean side of the track right?

Damn confusing turn of events that Qualifying session. Glad I got up at 5am to watch it though it was anything but boring.

One question it's left me asking is: What exactly would have happened if another car crashed out... The extra time lost could have made it impossible for any car to post a lap time, what would be the case then?

We saw it in Singapore where the qualifying was restarted with 26 seconds on the clock and no one left the pits. Luckily then everyone had managed to post a time. With this mornings events that wasn't the case, but luckily the time restarted with enough on the clock for everyone to make at least one flying lap.

Isn't it obvious? Ferrari would be given the front row and the rest would start from the pitlane. Anyone who crashed at Degner 1 or 2 would have to watch the race from the nearby ferris wheel. Such is the wisdom of the stewards.

Edit: It is a good question though. Perhaps in this case, they'd have re-run Q2 or let all fifteen cars (or however many were left at that stage) into Q3.

Wondered the same as well, just checked the rules and this is what they do:

36.2 b ) If more than one driver fails to set a time during Q1, Q2 or Q3 they will be arranged in the following order :

i) any driver who attempted to set a qualifying time by starting a flying lap ;

ii) any driver who failed to start a flying lap ;

iii) any driver who failed to leave the pits during the period.

If more than one driver falls into a single category in b ) or d) above they will be arranged on the grid in numerical order.

It's crash fest central and no Piquest in site. He must be gutted :)

Well that was all jolly exciting wasn't it !

Going on the weights, i think anyone in the top 10 could win this. With Brawn going up and down, maybe Barrichello could still make it to the podium. Trulli will either win this just to annoy me, *sigh* for Timo *sniff* the bastard. Or be as dull as usual and hold everyone up for lap after lap and then crash with 10 laps to go, leaving Vettel to cruise to an easy victory.

1. Hamilton

2. Vettel

3. Barrichello

I think it's a fair rule you can't be posting purple times under a yellow flag. For all they knew there could be a car in the middle of the track. I totally get the pressure of posting a time on the flip side but for once I think the stewards are correct.

I don't think the rules & punishments are sufficient deterrent with the current Q1/2/3 scenario. Moving from Q2 to 3 is a potential 14 grid place improvement. Sutil still starts in a Q3 position, it should probably be a 10 place penalty. The ideal scenario is the stewards asking for telemetry immediately and disqualifying & promoting drivers before the next session starts then adding the 5 place penalties on top.

That 5 place penalty decision is balls.

In what way? It's faded Button's chances of bagging the title this weekend, so I agree with you there. But it's potentially allowing Vettel to catch up a bit, which is good.

Of course, if you mean the drivers should be allowed to keep their fast laps, that's ludicrous.

Please clarify ;)

a yellow flag means "slow down, danger ahead". Button, Barrichello, Teflonso and sutil didn't.

They didn't wave the flag for a bit of a laught. If button had hit any of the debry from buemis accident, say a spring about yeah big and that had flipped up and then bunched a couple of times until Barrichello arrived at oooh about 130 mph. would you be asking why they got a 5 place penalty. I suspect not.

Yellow flags are waved for a reason. what is especially worrying is Brawn says that they don't normally lift for waved yellows on the straights and they the team don't tell Button or Barrichello that there are waved yellows.

I'm supprise that the FIA didn't throw the book at them. Imagine If Big Ron or Flav had said something like that if one of their drivers had kept their foots flat to the floor ....

Oh yeah.

You're right, sorry.
