The Formula 1 Thread

So, as i predicted Renault gets a slap wrist and told not to do it again. Well for two year at least.

They appear to be keeping the points and prize money from Singapore too.

I understand that they can't ban the team, i know that Renault have 700+ people working ofr them and that they can't all just be fired. But, this just feels like Renault have held their hands up fired a couple of big names and then walked away with a smug look and a few hearty backslap on the way through the door. Symonds will be a big loss for them, he was the brains of that team, Flav was just the front guy and driving force. Symonds was the guy that turned `15th into a win.

And the reason he was prepared to do this was that Renault were threatening to leave and needed a good reason to stay. The Singapore win turned the team around and led to the win in Japan. I believe that Symonds and Flav were felt they had to good to the lengths of having their driver deliberatly crash to win a race to convince Renault to stay in the sport.

I suspect that the FIA knew this too last year. If Piquet Snr told Charlie Whiting that his son had been told to crash his car at the end of last season, Whiting must have told Max or Bernie. they then say, well we can't do anything until Piquet presents a written statement. Knowing full well he couldn't. They knew Renault were talking about leaving, they didn't want that, so they ignored the aligation and hoped it would all just disapear under the carpet.

Mclaren got stitched up as Strepney and Coughlan tried to hide what had been going on. Big Ron got nailed over Lewis being unsure what the right thing to say to the stewards was.

Flav who may well have had nothing to do with it, it almost certainly wasn't his idea was it. Gets nailed by Renault, gets screwed by the FIA, is never allowed anywhere near an FIA sanctioned event F1, GP2, GP3 - two series which he effectively set up and turned into world class feeder series for F1 at the FIA behest. Is no longer allowed to manage a driver in any FIA sanctioned event, and may well loose his chairmanship of QPR over all of this apparently.

Renault call in a few favours, threaten to leave and walk away from almost killing someone scot free.

Yet Trulli is allowed to keep his Super licence !!!?

Another Classic FIA Random act of vengance.

It's a big kick in the nuts for Flav, and you have to wonder who else could be next if they were heavily involved in the breakaway F1 series which flav was instrumental in creating.

Bob, you almost seem sorry to see his stewardship of QPR at threat?

I'm annoyed that the FIA can a wave the Ban Hammer around so much. QPR are nothing to me really, but to denige Flav his chairmanship with out convicting him of anything in a court of law, seems a little harsh to me. Fair enough the FIA sanctioned stuff and the Driver management, which i always though must be a conflict of interest somewhere. But Out side of Motor racing, it doesn't seem right to me.

The writing was an that wall for Flav when Max called him a looney. :omg: the prince of darkness always get's his man. :omg: :OMG: :omg:

Has the guy running the donnington thing announced his plans yet ? Didn't Bernie say they had to product a letter of intent from the banks to garantee the race takes place. Something i don't recall seeing so far.

I don't think Donnington is going to happen. There wasn't a lot of work going on an the new track the last thing i heard. Contractors waiting for money etc. But i've not checked on things for a few months now.

oh here we go .... Donnington 2009

It's very hard to tell. I've heard loads of loltastic tales from local donington residents about the building work, and it isn't hard to move turf about (which looks like the majority of the work so far).

However, they do have McAlpine doing the work, one if the biggest building contractors in the country and they must be paying them with something.

The difference is that Symonds admitted his guilt, whereas Flav has admitted nothing. Therefore it's similar to what happens in court where someone pleads guilty as opposed to not guilty - they tend to get a reduced sentence for belatedly being honest and making the job of the court easier.

Oh i didn't realise he had admitted anything. That's certainly not the impression i got from the 5 Live report which suggested that he'd chosen to stick by Flav and keep his mouth shut rather than cooperate with the FIA.

Fucking hell, I'd love a job doing the kind of shit they do.

Cornwall is sadly not the hotbed of motorsport some other counties can claim to be. Hell, we don't even have anything you can call a circuit down here.

I guess that would be somewhere to start....

Yeah Symonds has written a letter begging for forgivness and blaming it all on Flav and the voices in his head. or some such.

At the end of the day Symonds was given the chance to nail it all on Flav and took that opportunaty with both hands it would seem.

If I had a million pounds I'd bet it all on the British GP being at Silverstone in 2010.

Even after Damon said this?:

"You have to put this in the context of inconsistencies in the way in which the FIA has treated breaches of the regulations over the years and, knowing what we know, we cannot dissociate this from the power play going on behind the scenes for control of Formula One," Hill said.

"Formula One has to ask itself, is it just a very expensive form of entertainment or a proper sport? There is a whole book on what's wrong with Formula One. It's called Bernie's Game and the history of this episode is typical."

The Dark lord looked down upon the prone body laying on the slab of black marble before him.

He smiles a slow malicious smile. Thin white lips spread wide across the face like an albino slug hunting for that last dandy lion leaf of the year.

It’s not pretty but the meaning is not lost on the crowd of acolytes crowding around the little scene. They smile, relief suddenly flowing into them like a fine Cote du Rhone following rare fillet steak. Some whimper and hold other tight, afraid to show too much emotion. Has the Dark lord Finished yet, they wonder.

Sweat drips from the face of the Dark Lord, peppering the now still figure laid before the Lord of Formula one. Finally he has his vengeance, oh they may have made him retreat to the shadows but his minion The Toad would be a safe pair of hands for the Dark Lord. But he has had his vengeance on the one he called a Looney, the leader of those little oiks that had dragged his Beloved Ferrari away from him. They had whispered into the ear of Montezemolo and promised to keep the Italian in sharp suits and comfy shoes.

But they would return. Once The Toad was in place they would see the error of their ways and return to the fold. Oh yes …..

Meanwhile he had their ringleader lying prostrate on his table of fun. Oh the Joy

A short ugly dwarf approaches the gathered crowd. His features twisted into what amounts to a smile. People have commented that he has the face only a mother could love, or someone wanting lots and lots of power and money.

The Dwarf looks up at The Dark lord, “Alright Guv’ner .. ‘ave you finish with fatty yet ? Only Piquet Snr wants to have a go next.”

The Dark Lord turns and regards his most trusted minion, he smiles again. “Yes, this poor … fool …. Will never set foot at a Formula 1 event as long has he breaths the air of this earth. He will never lead another poor young soul into temptation … and he shall never steal the heart of my Beloved Ferrari from me again mmmmwwhaAHHAHAHAHAHAHAA”

The dark lord turns and stumbles to the little shine in the corner of the tower, he falls to his knees, the acolytes crawl after him. “WHY, WHY, WHY DID YOU LEAVE ME nooooooooooo why why why !” His he had not has his tear ducks removed, he would cry as he cradles the little corgi cars of the Beloved Ferrari Shrine. “Did I not give you everything? Championship! Drivers! … the best of everything and you leave me for HIM?” he turns and stares at the figure on the table of fun. “What did He have that I ….. THE DARK LORD …… could not give you …… ?“

He breaks down, dry sobs wracking his thin body.

He reaches for the signed picture of Enzo and cradles it to his breast. “They will return Master, oh yes I vow they will return to me my master”

Made me chuckle today.

The BEEB:

Formula 1 boss Bernie Ecclestone says he thinks Flavio Briatore's indefinite ban for race-fixing was too severe.

The ex-Renault boss was punished for his role in ordering Nelson Piquet to crash in 2008's Singapore Grand Prix.

But Ecclestone, who was part of the hearing that dealt with the case, now feels the ban was disproportionare and urged Briatore to appeal against it.

"On reflection it wasn't necessary. It was too much. Definitely too much," said Ecclestone.

"I don't think it was necessary, but I was on the commission so I'm probably just as guilty as anybody."

Sooo, nothing to do with Flavio co owning QPR with Bernie then, and the rules that state you cannot be banned from another sport and own a football team ..

;)

The other interesting thing from that article- he's trying to get a US GP... as a street race in Manhattan! Now that would be fucking excellent. Although it sounds like the first meeting, with the NY authorities, didn't go down well... But that would be an absolute spectacle.

The only problem with Manhattan is that it's mostly grid based... so lots of right angled corners.... hmmmm.... ;-)

How much will this actually affect Renault? They knew ING were pulling out at the end of the year, and I'm sure they've got a pretty watertight contract, meaning that if ING walk away (which they have) then they still have to pay some sponsorship. It's not as if every single photo of a 2009 Renault is going to disappear and automagically be replaced by a new ING-less one? So ING still get some major coverage....

Anyway, I'm sure whatever they lose from ING they gain from not paying Flav.... ;-)
