Hm, I've got a feeling we might be hearing the Spanish national anthem at the end of this. Ted reckons the tyres hit the cliff after 25 laps - Pastor stopped with 24 laps left.

Bugger. A fan of Alonso, but he has a habit of party pooping what could be amazing underdog wins.

He is a pay driver. By definition.

Of course so was Alonso when he started.

They all are, all the drivers carry sponsorship with them that will be a part of the package they can offer a team.

One thing's for sure: if Maldonado keeps his tyres in and wins then it will have not just been the drive of a journeyman, but the drive of a properly good F1 driver.

EDIT: We have now gone past the point where the front two could stop and come out in front of Raikkonen.

What sponsorship is, for instance, Massa bringing Ferrari?

Pastor has his money because Venezuela throws it at anyone half competent. That doesn't mean he's not very, very good of course.

There's also that whole "if you do well at Catalunya, you'll do okay for the rest of the season" stuff that all the journalists like to bring up. This race bodes well for Williams.

True enough, but then what does Massa bring to Ferrari at all nowdays?

My point is, if you've got a good driver on your books, you're going to attract more sponsors. Look at the Sauber, it's gradually gained sponsors as the car, and more importantly, Perez and Kobayashi have proved themselves, they've become a more attractive package because of those drivers. Another example, the 1996 Arrows was pretty bare if memory serves me rightly, they manage to stick Damon Hill in their cockpit and they have a car covered in sponsors.

People use "pay driver" as a stick to beat a teams decision to employ a driver, but to have a big sponsor behind you is pretty much the only way to get into Formula 1 now.

Yes but there's a difference between that and a driver who will be personally sponsored by the self same companies no matter where they go.

Perez btw, is one of those drivers and responsible for most of the logos on that car.

I'm fully aware that Perez is highly sponsored by Mexico, he's also a Ferrari development driver and it would be easy to assume that one of the reasons he has that seat is down to Sauber being a Ferrari customer. My point still stands that "pay driver" is used far too often to knock a driver down, when the reality is its often the only option a driver and teams have when choosing a driver. No doubt Di Resta's seat at Force India is also partially down to his affiliation with Mercedes.
