The Formula 1 Thread

This is for Motor sport and Formula one mostly. Not "name your 5 most hated despotic leaders" thread.

But...

1. Bernie Ecclestone

2. Jean-Marie Balestre

3. Ron Dennis

4. Luca Di Montezemolo

5. Jake Humphrey*

*No-one is that fucking nice. He is hiding something.

You've got Balestre and Bernie the wrong way round. Every single piece of media I've ever encountered has Balastre comming across as a complete bastard, and a miserable bastard at that. Bernie's just a greedy cunt.

And Jake, absolutely. Probably a child drug smuggling prostitute pimp, or something.

The day F1 goes closed cockpit is the day I stop watching. Anyway, that already pretty much exists, with those awful LeMans endurance things.

:o

You sire are now dead to me ...

alright the r18 is the sort of car only it's mother could love

Rolands accident was much more unpleaseant viewing than Senna's IMO. I remember watching Roland being extracted out of the car and the medics doing heart massage wheil he was being trollied to the back of the helicopter. With Ayrton I can view it now and still expect him to get out of the car, Roland had no chance.

Sad times.

Yeah, pretty awful. I was watching qualifying at my brother's house at the time as he had Eurosport - he had a really big telly which unfortunately meant when they showed his car slewing to a halt at Tosa it was pretty apparent to both of us that there was a lot of blood on the front of his helmet.

In just over a week it'll be 30 years since Gilles Villeneuve crashed as well. Somewhere or other I have an article that I wrote for some now-defunct motorsport site back on the 20th anniversary in 2002. Might post it here on the day if I can find it.

You haven't see the footage of Ayrton with the massive pool of blood forming beside the car then. Apparently there is some pretty horrific stuff out there, but it's not been seen much.

Also - an Autosprint (i think) photographer has a load of images of the whole crash and aftermath. Again supposed to be very distressing and graphic, so the publisher and photographer agreed never to print them and to just lock them in a safe.

I saw that live and never saw it shown again afterwards. One of those things they just always seem to cut out. It was that image that really made me fear for him more than anything else at the time.

I only got the coverage the BBC had of Ayrton, and that was enough. I have seen a few photo's which give an indication of massive head trauma without being too graphic. Rolands coverage was on the news supplied by eurosport, and I think because it was kind of happening on the fly they got a bit more than they would have wanted.

I'm sure I read somewhere recently that Ratzenberger said he was scared of what the car was doing.

When my Dad last came down (Easter weekend) we watched Senna and both myself and my step Mum commented we thought we saw his head move before he was extracted from the car. I've seen the accident a few times and had never noticed it before and it was a split second thing. I'm still not sure I saw it correctly...
