I wonder how much of this resurgence in pace for Williams is down to the renault engine. Though lotus/Caterham didn't leap forward when they made the same switch last year…

With regard to Maldonado, I don't think he's to blame for the Grosjean hit- he was a long way ahead, on the inside- he'd won the corner, so I'd say a 50-50 incident.

Looks like a very interesting season.looks like mclaren, then red bull, then a clump of mercedes, Williams, lotus, sauber, Ferrari that seems yet to rssolve itself into an order. Alonso got way more out if that car than you'd reasonably think possible.

I've listend to some of the coverage on 5live and actually found myself enjoying hearing James Allen, seemed calmer and much improved from his ITV days. Looking forward to the practice sessions and his commentary along with Alguersuari. I hope they can produce the same quality as Croft and Davidson as I they where one of the covearge highlights.

Just noticed this on James Allen's site, a race stratergy calculator, quite interesting to have a play with.

so despite qualy showing otherwise, Red Bull and McLaren seem to be broadly similar on pace, Ferrari and Mercedes a gap after (Massa is just dead weight), whilst Williams being the biggest gainers - from Green Lotus speed last season to matching it with the top teams - I've always thought their tech was let down by the Cosworth engine - if only they had kept Barrichello for another season, it would have been like a Brawn GP 2.0 comeback. Instead we have accident prone Maldanaldo and Senna.

Black Lotus also right up there on pace, just had a bad start and retirement... would have popped up strongly in the points. Sauber are also knocking strongly on the Top 4 team doors, Kobayashi 6TH and Perez 8th from back of the grid!!! Dunno why there's hate for him, different strategies and he may have ruined a few races - but that's racing. And 3RD PLACE in the CONSTRUCTORS!!!

I'm so glad they banned those blown diffusers.

Also in high pitched whiny voice -

'WHY DO I HAVVA ALL THE BLUE FLAGS?'

I'd like to see the Massa/Senna incident again, from what little I saw it looked like Senna was ahead and Massa just went 'fuck you',

Just watching it again and it does look like Massa had the line and Senna tried to go on the outside but it didn't work, just a racing incident with no one to blame, which they both agree on.

Not sure if Massa will see the season out, wonder what the odds are on him swapping with Kobayashi or Perez at somepoint in the season. Be interesting to see what Kobayashi would do with the car, he'd certainly wring the neck of it which is what the car seems to need. Still think whatever happens this will be Massa's last season at Ferrari, would be happy to be made a fool of and Massa come back and prove everyone wrong though.

Also was it just me or did it seem quite awkward between Hamilton's Mum and Nicole when sat in the garage. Just after the bit on the qualifying yesterday about Button and the people around him it seemed to standout?

Just saw the race on the beeb. It was okay, nothing special.

Once again Lewis is coming in for attention for not being graceful in defeat but, perhaps I'm biased, but I don't see what is so fucking noble about this English tradition of being a good loser. He doesn't get in his car to come second. The McLaren was the best all-round car out there today and he doesn't know how long they'll have the advantage for added to which he was beaten by a team-mate about who it is widely acknowledged he has the edge in raw speed on plus he was on pole! To compound shit the fucking safety car robbed him of 2nd. Why the fuck shouldn't he be moody?

As long as he doesn't try to blame the failings on others I'm all for him being massively fucked off, I find that's the best way to get focused next time out.

I think the Massa/Senna thing looks worse than it was because the wheels got locked together.

Refuse to get Sky, but the BBCs coverage looked much cheaper this year. Missed the gridwalk, seemingly dropped in favour of pre-arranged interviews, I just liked the randomness and rudeness of Brundle barging through everybody. New commentator was alright, it was nice to have some genuine enthusiasm at points from Edwards in contrast to Crazy Dave. EJ and Jake still knock spots off everybody - you can't buy that kind of chemistry.

Helmet cam is fascinating. I end up watching the LED readouts and trying to work out what they mean.

I've watched both (well just the first few laps of BBC's race coverage) and I prefer Croft to Edwards, who seems too excitable. Which is a shame as I think Coulthard is good as a support commentator. Brundle, Croft and Coulthard, there's my team!

Also one other thing I noticed was that the engines sound soooo much nicer this year. Like a loud purr, or something

Edwards definitely calmed down after the opening laps. Probably an adrenaline overload, first race etc etc. Croft is a great commentator, mind.

Re: Engines - sounding better due to lack of that popping sound when off the throttle?

On the non-BBC days get on sopcast - I was watching a 720p feed this morning. Very nice.

What channel was that? I downloaded sopcast for the first time and had a quick look. Channels are arranged by country aren't they?

How much of the race did the BBC actually show? I know it finished about 1 hour 20 after the program started, but I have no idea when they started it proper (as opposed to pre-race build up stuff).

Edit: Ah, looked on Iplayer. Looks like they broadcast about 70 minutes out of the 95. I downloaded a rip of the Sky broadcast today (couldn't be bothered to get up at 6 when there was a chance of not getting a working feed!). Not sure whether or not to do that again when I can't watch it live somehow, or just go with the BBC highlights next time.

I thought that too, I'm no reader of body language but it looks like you could describe their relationship as sub-zero.

Just watched the BBC programme.... well, the end of race stuff anyway. I'm not sure whether it is because they had more time to prepare it, but it was so much better than the Sky post-race stuff. I know Sky may get better, but the interview with Button by Jake, Eddie and DC just shows the level of relationship they have with some of the most important characters in F1, and I'm not sure that Sky can match that. True, it is going to often be with the British drivers, but Eddie does seem to have good access in a lot of places (although he can be quite cringey at times), e.g. with Domenicalli.

Of course, Brundle knows lots of the people too and will also have great access, but I don't think he comes across as warm sometimes, and it is this which you really need to get to know the real thoughts/feelings of the drivers etc.

Not sure I'm getting across what I'm trying to say, but watch the short Button interview and to me that sums up what is great about the BBC coverage, and what I think Sky will struggle to match.

Maldonando. Frank must be kicking himself that he didn't try and hang on to some kind of experienced driver. That's a rookie error. Massa needs some kind of miracle to save his seat, do Ferrari shift alot of metal to Japan?

I enjoyed the BBC coverage. The only negative I could raise is that they cut out the safety car period and resumed just as it went in which meant we didn't get to see what happened with Vettel & Hamilton. I felt sorry for Maldonado binning it on the last lap, I thought he did good through the race.

Well, I was pleasantly surprised by the bbc's highlights. In a 2 hour show I was expecting the usual hour of pre-race coverage, 30-40 minutes of the race, then a bit at the end. To get 75 minutes of the race with a decent commentary was a bonus and I don't mind not seeing the entire safety car period etc.

I'm not keen on the coverage not starting till 10:30 for the USA races though.

Speaking of Brundle, when it was Mr Sky, Hill and Brundle chatting about the importance of qualifying, Brundle came out with "I was always good at starts", Hill gave a very subtle "fuck off" kind of look.

Also, in regards to the chemistry or lack of between Nicole and Hamilton's Mum, the former didn't seem to want to be there at all. I have more admiration for Jenson's girlfriend. She's always there, she dresses like a fan despite being a super model (do the Pussycat Dolls actually perform anymore?) and theres genuine warmth within the team from what we've seen on TV towards her. She's there to support her bloke, not try and raise her public profile and thats really great to see.

Yeah it's great how she always dresses up in the orange jerseys etc with the rest of the team. Can't see Scherzinger doing that. She's very sweet too, took a picture of me and Jenson's dad when I met them :)

I'm just catching up on some of the BBC programming, and the difference is mind blowing; the BBC presenters are so much more laid back and fun to watch. Lazenby on Sky is too much of a football pundit for me.
