Imagine going back in time and having to explain to your 1997 self that in 15 years you'd be literally amazed Williams survive from one season to the next and they would be running 2 "paydrivers".

Yeah, amazing isn't it? Because I'm a bit tragic I've been watching through seasons that I have stored on my NAS and having gone through 1995 I am a few races into 1996. Utterly crazy to think that Williams team is in anyway related to the current one.

That said, given 1995 and the early part of 1996 it would have been a bit tricky imagining McLaren being as good as they are as well!

@Dudley: Nope, and that one of the biggest teams would eventually rise from the ashes of Tyrrell as well! Jordan would be the Indian national team, Sauber would have had a break to be run by BMW before returning a few years later, Arrows and Ligier would be gone...

... one guilty pleasure about going back to that period is that it's always fun to see these running around:

That said, given 1995 and the early part of 1996 it would have been a bit tricky imagining McLaren being as good as they are as well!

Not to mention how far back Ferrari were before Schumacher went there. Benetton really got shafted in that deal.

A thought experiment for you all.

Imagine, just for a moment, where williams (and the whole sport) would be if Frank and Patrick had given Adrian Newey what he wanted, a stake in the team.

BMW would likely either still be around, or would have left after a few years of success and never bought Sauber?

Montoya a world champion?

Red Bull would possibly just be solid midfielders carrying on happily enough where Jaguar were?

McLaren in the doldrums for a lot longer (they only really came back from that mid-90s slump when he came on board)?

F1 what-ifs are always the kinds of things you can get lost for hours thinking about, made even more complicated by how many different aspects go into making teams win. I mean, I've just finished reading through The Lost Generation by David Tremayne (very, very good if you fancy a new read) and the possibilities for any of the three drivers the book is based on - Tony Brise in particular - are actually quite painful to think about.

You're forgetting Ferrari in all that, though.

12:31 Maldonado is the only other man on the track and completes his lap in 1m25.042s.

Is this a feature or a fault? There is no other talk on the topic, but with the highly visible exhaust exits is this something we can expect this season??

Yeah. Whenever you read drivers and team owners autobiographies there are always tales of what are essentially random acts of chance making or breaking seasons, or even careers; world champions who may never have even sat in a Formula 1 car if someone else hadn't slipped on a patch of ice and broken their arm on a certain day, meaning they - as a 17 year old mechanic who'd never considered actually racing - got in a car at some amateur event and impressed someone important watching from the stands.

14:38 Ricciardo's Toro Rosso has stopped at Curva Expo, the first turn.

14:38 The Australian was going slowly down the main straight before having to park the car.

14:39 Impressive that the teams got nearly seven hours into the first day of testing their largely untried machines before red flags were required.

14:41 Recovery trucks head down towards Turn 1, where the Toro Rosso lies.

14:41 It had looked like Ricciardo might try and limp right round the lap, but instead the Toro Rosso had to limply park.

14:42 Ricciardo is out of the car with his helmet off, and has a small army of photographers lined up by the barrier.

14:42 The tow truck has lifted the Toro Rosso onto its back with minimum of fuss.

14:43 Until it came to actually lowering it...

14:43 The marshals can't quite decide which way around the car should be placed, so it's currently just spinning around...

14:44 Success! The car is down on the truck.

Highlights from yesterday showing off some of the cars on track including the new Mercedes which surprising (to me) doesn't have such a huge step in the nose.

It's in Finnish so you also get to see interviews with Raikkonen & Kovalainen using their native tongue.
