Any reason why the teams can't just employ a slanted approach, so the whole nose is in a straight line but at an angle, with no major indentation?

Or a sloped approach rather than a bump

there's probably a minimum nosecone length and it has to be a maximum height along it's entire length.

THEN THE BUMP

and rest of the car has seperate rules.

that would require the footbox bulkhead (the high bit of the hump) to be lower. this is what McLaren are doing. you're not allowed to slope up from the point of the new nose because the rules specifically forbid any bodywork in this area.

McLaren have a nice smooth nose because they've put the point of the nose a lot lower then everyone else, and the driver's feet a bit lower than eveyone else, basically.

The rest of the teams have put the drivers feet as high as possible out of the underbody airflow, and that means the "hump" is the only legal way of making those two areas of the car (minimum size for footbox bulkhead, maximim height of bodywork ahead of the wheels) still fit the regs.

I wonder if there'll be a small rule change for next year mandating a maximum footbox height at the same level as the nosecone.

I'm quite optimistic the move from Cosworth to Renault is really going to help them. From general chitter chatter it's understood the Cosworth is a pretty hefty unit in terms of weight, so they will have saved a significant amount just with the switch, not to mention having more power.

Also, a diagram that helps explain the McLaren situation!

Hmm, on all the side shots I've seen (and looking at the Sauber specifically at the moment as the picture is closest to hand) the top of the nose prior to the bump is level with the top of the wheel. Are Mclaren somehow running lower wheels?

I wish Williams would ditch the dark blue. It's synonymous with them being shit.

Also.. the horrible truth of that driver line up just really hit. Fuck it's poor. If you go to the Williams site there is a little image on the right hand site - a promo for the media library. It uses a shot from 87. Just looking at that and then the sorry state of affairs they've just shot - crap driver line up and no sponsors to speak of it really hits home how much they've fallen :(

I want the old Williams back!

Can't see any evidence of Senna money on that Williams and the drivers overalls look like a low end Formula Ford team.

So they... signed Senna based purely on... performance...?

Even though it's not all his fault I kind of blame him though. He's just so hate/punch-able.

Stop getting Bond Williams wrong.

I think he's over-exaggerated the step there, true.

Testing has started folks - welcome to F1 2012 :D.

I'm following this at the moment, Kimi's back with a vengeance isn't he!

09:56 That's quicker than any time set in Jerez testing last winter, and puts him 1.7s clear of second-placed Rosberg.

09:55 Raikkonen sets a new fastest time - a blistering 1m19.670s.

Now I know it's early on the first day, and McLaren and Red Bull haven't set times yet but that's some impressive driving. Rosberg, Massa and de la Rosa have all been going for fastest laps and haven't come anywhere close to touching Kimi's lead.

I always try to avoid getting excited in testing, especially day one. But I don't think that any of us expected Kimi to be so fast out of the blocks. If the Autosport.com feed didn't auto refresh I'd be spamming F5 as if I was 11 playing Track and Field again! :D

He's on mediums!

Can't wait to see what McLaren and Jenson can set! Come on! Be good!

Force India trying to spoil the party.

10:31 Force India update: "just checking each system today and dialling the the car at the same time. Priority is also to get miles today for data collection". Paul di Resta has done 28 laps so far, third fastest 1m21.526s, 1.307s off

Pull the other one guys, it's got bells on. Kimi in a Lotus is faster than you, deal with it. :P

To be fair, Lotus went from last victory to out of F1 in less time than it's been since Williams won a race. They're holding on better than that at least. Brabham went from last championship to out in the same time, quicker if you count that they actually were forced to skip an entire season only 5 years after winning the title.

Cruel sport.

Incidentally I've spotted the Embratel logo in other shots of the Williams, the driver is sat in front of it in ours, which tells you how big it isn't.
