It's been done to stop the front of cars potentially hitting drivers' heads in the event of face-to-face contact (Schumi and Liuzzi at Abu Dhabi 2010 situation) and from being easy to launch off the back of another car so I can kind of understand it, but they should have lowered the height for the front bulkhead too or allowed the teams to do an old Red Bull styled ridge affair.

Interestingly, BBC analyst/former designer Gary Anderson says of all the cars he's seen so far, the Force India impresses him the most.

They've got the money, a great engine... I'm getting the feeling they could make a pretty hefty leap towards the front this season.

Front pull rod will be a laugh. I reckon the nose will be completely different by the first race, probably just a place holder.

I don't think so. Given Ferrari's interest in aesthetics I can't see why they'd launch with something so ugly if their going to wholesale change it. The elements that make up the wing itself will change, but the _/ i'd expect to stay exactly the same.

I was just thinking- if you shape that nose kick just right, you could use it to flick a nice high-pressure stream over the driver's head into the airbox. it would only work at a narrow speed range, but still...

I'm sure they rather keep it under the radar ad win the WCC than release a few sexy PR shots pre season. I reckon it will be more nuanced than it current is.It's possible that just a straight step is the fastest design.

The only way I can see that McLaren have got away with not having a step is by the height of the chassis not being the full 650mm (which is allowed as far as I can see). You have to drop from 650mm to 550mm within 150mm (hence the step). So if your starting point is not 650mm, but, is say 600mm, then no step.

That Gary Anderson vid was interesting, so there's nothing particularly exciting about the car, the front nose is a compromise and could screw them over and that exhaust bulge looks like a removable dummy item that'll be long gone come the Melbourne start line.

From his view they're not looking great.

It's all about the Red Bull reveal.

Okay, I am bored and decided to use some of my ridiculously sad knowledge of F1 to craft an RLLMUK F1 Quiz for you guys to chip away at co-operatively. Will probably post the answers up later this evening!

Question 1

Take a look at this picture:

dontcheat.jpg

Who, what and when? As a bonus, can you tell me the unusual situation that led to this driver being in the car at this particular race weekend?

Question 2

What do Nigel Mansell's race at Rio 1989 and Michael Schumacher's drive at Montreal in 1995 have in common?

Question 3

In a similar vein, what do the last lap of the 1991 Spanish Grand Prix and the last lap of the 1993 Italian Grand Prix have in common?

Question 4

Which team were first to use the raised nose in Formula One, and at which race/year did it debut?

Question 5

"I know that no human being can do a miracle. Nobody commands magical properties, but he made you wonder. He was that quick." Jacques Laffite, talking about whom?

Question 6

Nick Wirth's Simtek team had a pretty difficult debut year in Formula One in 1994. Which F1 car had he previously designed?

Question 7

McLaren ended up with Peugeot engines in 1994, but their initial intention was to run something else. They even tested the engine extensively during the latter stages of 1993. Which engine was this?

Question 8

Who was the first British driver to win a (championship counting) Formula One race for Ferrari, and which race in which year did he do this?

Question 9

Which Formula One drivers raced with a) a plastic ear and b) a prosthetic lower right leg?

Question 10

Leo Kinnunen was a pretty average backmarker in Formula One during 1974 . However, his appearance at the 1974 Swedish Grand Prix proved a milestone for the sport. What was it?

Have fun everyone :sherlock:

It doesn't matter if it's pretty as long as the car is fast. Just remember last year when we saw the first new rear wings... all narrow and up high. We got used to it and so we will this upcoming season.

That video has me worried that maybe Mclaren have gone down the wrong road again.

I thought the same thing but then as McLaren are fast engineers I'm sure they will come up with a modified nose and catch up from the back (like they did the last few years)
