Anyway......BBC are doing a kind of extended highlights of the races they aren't showing live aren't they? I'll probably just stick with that.

Yes if I can't find an on-line stream of the race this will have to do.

Only problem is you'll pretty much have to enter a media and Internet blackout in the interim to avoid accidentally finding out the results! I couldn't watch a few races live last season, and ending spoiling at least the winner for myself on at least two or three occasions, whether that be automatically clicking on the F1 thread here, happening to walk past a tv showing highlights, or even someone posting about it on Facebook.

Although I imagine that'll be a lot easier now since so many fewer people will be watching.

Yep very difficult to avoid the result & wait for the BBC highlight package

One of my proudest moments of last season was managing to avoid the result of Valencia until I got back from a trip to Berlin the next day. I watched it at 11pm that night and nearly cried when I realised just how shit it was.

In other news I puckered my lips and pressed them against the juicy Murdoch ringpiece today. I'm so sorry. £70 a month for TV + phone + internet. I can deal with that, just about. Goes against my principles of being a complete tightarse, mind.

You should be able to get F1 on Sky for £30 a month, £50 with phone and internet.

another thing is missing the lively banter on here, on many occasions it was more interesting than the race itself (Valencia)

I'll have it too. I just can't do without live F1. Sorry to say it but it's a big part of my life (that sounds really sad...) and I'm not ready to give it up. It's the only TV I really watch.

They could double the price and I'd still probably pay. I'd just cut something else from my disposable (like some new clothes, or gym membership) to pay for it. I can see the headlines now. MURDOCH MADE ME FAT! :hmm:

Come on guys, it'll be like the footy. Every game, without fail despite it being advertised everywhere, some people will go 'anyone got a decent stream?' and if it goes down or doesn't work for you, there'll be 5 different alternatives. I'm actually hoping LiveOnlineFooty decide to show it - if I recall correctly, they showed Wrestlemania as well as the Haye fight last year. Yeah it's easier watching on Sky, you just flick the channel over and you've got the red button and you can record, do whatever - but with such a long lead up to a race, longer than the build up for a football match, you'll have plenty of time to sort yourself out.

Remember, there will be millions who watched on the BBC searching for an alternative - some will take up Sky but honestly, how many? More people still watch Match of the Day rather than sign up for Sky Sports. There'll be plenty who want to stream and even if it's not on a pay site, there'll be enough interest to warrant free streams.

It's also not like football, where some games won't be shown on a UK language channel - you're guaranteed every single race is televised and some people will prepare the streams regardless.

tl;dr version - streams will happen, not as easy as TV but you're not giving Murdoch a penny.

Damon Hill joins the Sky Team.

http://www1.skysports.com/formula-1/news/12433/7438312/Damon-Hill-joins-Sky-team

Sky Sports have announced that former World Champion Damon Hill has joined their team to cover the 2011 season on their dedicated F1 channel, Sky Sports F1 HD.

In an entirely-unpredicted announcement that also serves to prove that secrets can be kept in F1, the broadcasters have revealed that Hill, who raced in F1 between 1992 and 1999, has been hired to provide expert analysis for their soon-to-launch station.

Joining a team of pundits that already includes Martin Brundle and Anthony Davidson in addition to commentator David Croft and pit-lane reporters Ted Kravitz Natalie Pinkham, Hill will be on air for ten - Australia, Bahrain, Monaco, Britain, Germany, Hungary, Belgium, India, USA and Brazil - of the scheduled twenty grands prix.

Welcoming him to the channel, which will broadcast every session of every grand prix in 2012, Executive Producer Martin Turner enthused: "Damon Hill is a British motor racing legend and has incredible Formula 1 knowledge and insight. He will provide our viewers with not just a driver's eye view, but also that of a world champion. There aren't many around and I'm delighted we'll have Damon with us during the season."

Hill himself revealed that the lure of being part of a channel dedicated to F1 had proved impossible to resist: "The plans Sky Sports have for Formula 1 are very impressive, particularly the dedicated Formula 1 channel and I couldn't resist becoming involved. There are so many reasons to be excited about the new season and I can't wait to get started."

The channel will launch in early March, with exclusive live coverage of the Australian GP beginning on March 16.

Anyone watched the German TV stream before? Their state broadcaster, I believe, still has coverage and streams online. I can't faff around getting a dish to pick it up free where I live due to landlord, though it is possible.

ANyone ever been to Barcelona tests before? I'm thinking of going but google is drawing a blank on how much it costs, what parts are accessible, and just about any detail that could be used to make a decision. For example whether it sells out with thousands of Alonso fans. I've read this happened in the past, but whether that was Jerez, or when he was at Renault? No idea.

I got mocked for saying 600 a year!

I'm torn as to what to do, I moved flat in December, there's no aerial socket, and signal is a nightmare on this street(the houses have poles holding the aerials about 30 feet above rooftop level) our indoor booster one can just about get BBC so long as no one nearby is using their mobile and Film4. There is however a fibre optic Virgin Media cable socket ready and waiting right next to where the TV is setup....

I'm going to call them and see what they can offer, it would have to be less than 20quid all in though. I've got two months to wear them down :)

I'm assuming that is for the Sky Sports package. In fairness, if you just wanted F1 then the basic cost is £30 a month. Not cheap, but not too bad. I wonder if Sky will offer a F1 season pass, as in won't make you sign up for a full twelve month contract.

The slight problem here is that football as a sport is much more friendly to low bitrate video than F1 is. Generally the football is a shot from above the pitch with some people running round. They don't switch suddenly to a different camera too often and generally it's at moments where half a second for the video to "catch up" detailwise doesn't detract from the experience too much. People don't move that quick and the background is largely static and not especially detailed. Modern codecs are clever enough to track "objects" and can do a really good set up with these details.

By contrast, cars moving at 200mph with constantly cutting camera angels, massively varied backgrounds etc is a nightmare. Not to say it'll be impossible but you'll need much higher bandwidth to get the same perceived quality for F1.

I'm going to use SkyGo on my Ps3 or 360 to get the channel. My brother subscribes to Sky Sports so I should be able to use his subscription on my Ps3 even though we live at different addresses. Anyone see the flaw in this? I'm assuming I can watch F1 in SD on SkyGo.

Streams have improved muchly, yeah you can still get the odd shite stream where it looks like you're being shown a crap Powerpoint presentation but nowadays you can get almost HD quality - even from the likes of Veetle.

I watched some races live on iPlayer last year and LiveOnlineFooty's standard streams are very much comparable. Veetle streams have a wider variation due to the fact that it's not private so anyone can offer something up and any number of people can get on.

I used to watch Sky through my Xbox using someone else's account in a completely different city. Works fine.

Just need Trulli to go also

:eyebrows:

Petrov 2012 Trulli in Caterham?

The team still denied, but the days of Jarno Trulli seem to be counted in Caterham - Vitaly Petrov said teammate Heikki Kovalainen of Vitaly Petrov is apparently close to an agreement with Caterham

(Motor-Total.com) - By the end of the Formula 1 season 2011 has been speculated that Jarno Trulli could lose his tribe cockpit at Caterham. Now it appears that the noose around the neck of 37-year-old Italian incur, although he actually has an existing contract. Vitaly Petrov because it is according to information from 'Motor-Total.com' managed to put together a compelling package sponsors.

After separation of the Lotus Petrov manager Oksana Kossatschenko held for weeks in Russia in order to conduct negotiations with potential sponsors. 15 million U.S. dollars (the equivalent of almost twelve million euros) they should have found - especially with Lada automobile manufacturers and oil company Lukoil. That's enough money to fund fixed costs in addition to the eight million for a Grand Prix season even the severance of Trulli.

Caterham on the part of you, however, shrouded in silence. "Jarno has a fixed contract with us we will not participate in the speculation and rumors are not commenting," a team spokesman waving at the request of 'motor-Total.com' from. However, he refuses to confirm Trulli's participation in the season opener in Melbourne, decidedly, "I can not confirm I have understood you." The existing contract with the veteran but was "fact".

Petrov's rumored move to Caterham could be officially confirmed in the next few days. Thus, the variant that the Russians as a stable mate Timo Glock could switch to Marussia, probably off the table permanently. Trulli's Formula 1 career would have ended, should confirm the latest rumors. The Italians could then concentrate on his second career as a winemaker.
