This particular day is always pretty dangerous for me as an F1 fan. I seem to suffer from some kind of F1-influenced Seasonal Affective Disorder in which the final credits to the last F1 programme of the season usher in a month of moping around wishing there was more motorsport happening.

This day in particular though is always the one I wander across to various webshops and impulse-buy a whole ton of books and DVDs to make it through the winter.

Must.

Resist.

I'M NOT THE ONLY ONE!:wub: We should set up a support group.

It hasn't hit yet, as I've been busy. It's when I'm not busy that hit will hit me like a ton of bricks.

Depends how dull Steve Ryder manages to be. If it's bearable I'll probably end up streaming or going on news blackouts and downloading the Sky races.

I'm not keen on watching the races after they have happened, it has to be live streaming. I don't mind about the qualifying happy to miss those but would prefer to watch the races live or at least the 10 that the BBC are not showing.

For the non-sky users what are you planning to do next season?

Just stick with the BBC races & highlights package?

On-line streaming of the feed with Radio5 commentary was what I was thinking.

I really do intend to go cold turkey. I won't be going out of my way to watch it like I have done for the past 20 odd years. But I will be filling the void with motorsport related activities.

Everyone should read Jake's latest blog

http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/jakehumphrey/2011/11/jake_humphreys_2011_season_rev.html

This bit especially caught my attention as I mentioned it yesterday

It's worth pointing out that the drivers are not obliged to join us live pre-race, before or after qualifying, or on the F1 Forum. They choose to do it, which I think speaks volumes for both our coverage and about the drivers themselves.

What Jakes said about the BBC coverage for next year doesn't sound too bad, okay the races they don't show live will also be edited to fill a 2 hour slot but I've found on occassion this year (and especially once I managed to get a job, and especially with it being in retail) I've struggled to get to watch an entire 3 hour F1 show plus the Forum, take yesterday for example, I was starting work at 6pm, so was having something to eat and getting read whilst the race was on and I completely missed everything that happened once the drivers left the podium. It's not perfect, but it seems like a half decent compromise from the BBC and I can't complain about that too much, I may even upgrade to Sky's F1 channel depending upon what the deal is with Virgin Media.

Really, the biggest loss is Brundle (Crofts joined Sky too hasn't he?) It's a huge shame he's gone over to Sky as the commentary from him and DC has been exceptional this year, theres been enough there to keep long-time fans who know a bit about the tecnicalities such as us lot interested but they've managed to stream line it and dumb it down enough to also educate others that haven't followed motor racing for quite so long and from my own experience of all of the fan girls that are on social sites such as Tumblr (seriously, check this "sebson", its fucking scary!), they've helped bring in a huge new following.

I'm in a lucky position as in i already have Sky with HD so it's not going to cost me anything extra next year.

My plan is to support the BBC wherever possible. Will watch all live races on BBC & i'm really hoping the Croft/Brundle commentary is cross channel as that would make me lean towards sky. Also interesting Martin said more tech features for sky, again this interests me a lot.

I still don't 100% get how the BBC highlight's packages will work but if i can support the BBC i will be.

I think Ted Kravitz is headed towards Sky too, and that's as big a loss for the Beeb as Brundle for me. He used to be really annoying, but these days he's developed a seriously dry sense of humour and his technical tidbits during each session and race are always very interesting. Kind of glad they're keeping him, Brundle and Croft together if the rumours prove to be true.

One thing I will definitely miss though is the Croft/Davidson duo for Friday practice. Was a nice chemistry between them and for me the ideal duo to ease you into an F1 weekend - friendly, less intense banter but still dealing with whatever issues the sport had each particular weekend.

Yeah they were awesome together. Always had the audio on in the background at work during FP1-2 on a friday.

I hope it all shakes out ok, time will tell. The idea of getting up at 5am for sky coverage doesn't 100% grab me, but all the sky go, mobile device coverage, (potentially abroad? would be awesome for me personally)

I think the thing that worries me most is that the BBC's coverage has really covered the human aspect of the sport well. Be it Jake and EJ strolling through the paddocks grabbing people left, right and centre or DC's track guides, they've gone under the laminated super shine of the sport and shown that F1 drivers and team managers are human. Sometimes very annoying humans, obviously, but it was great to watch. Plus, drivers like Vettel and Button always liked talking to Jake and EJ and it was always good fun when they were on.

I'm concerned Sky are going to go all spit and polish and present something that covers plenty of aspects of the sport and is pretty knowledgeable, but completely soulless. Has there been any word on whether Sky will present their pre and post-race stuff from the circuit or not? Again, something that worked really well for the Beeb was being on location all the time. Can't imagine it being the same if half the Sky crew are commenting and analysing from half a continent away in a squeaky clean studio.

Yeah the Steve Ryder & Tony Jardine vibes of sky are exactly what i don't want to see. The BBC coverage was incredibly informative but fun, entertaining & a joy to watch. They listened to the fans, (Legard) & the relationships they had within the paddock were 2nd to none. I don't blame someone like Brundle jumping ship, & he & croft are my biggest reasons to be excited about Sky's current coverage. Time will obviously tell though.

Yeah, I don't blame Brundle jumping ship; if the rumours of Jake turning Sky down are true, then I think he's made a naive error. I'm not sure if I'll get the F1 channel, as I'm on BT at my current place - we get Sky Sports 1 & 2, so maybe we'll get the F1 channel too.

I think Jake has his eye on stuff apart from F1 - I'd imagine he'll be a big part of next years Olympic coverage for the BBC. Obviously that's not the situation with Martin.

Edit - slowness!

The difference is Jake is a BBC man whilst Brundle is just F1. Jake will be heading the BBC coverage of the Olympics next year which I doubt he would still be doing if he jumped ship. In that position I'd stay at the BBC, he'll still be doing F1 and covering events like the Olympics.

I was more positive when there was talk of the Sky channel being on Freeview, but as that seems to likely be bollocks I'm not too sure. I'll likely end up streaming the races, been doing it a lot more with football recently and it's not too bad, not looking forward to trying to get a stream for Australia though. I'm going to try and not think about it too much otherwise I'll just spend the off season pissed off about it all.

Edit: Marussia Virgin like in my slowness.

Yeah, I don't blame Brundle jumping ship;

Na not at all, and Sky obviously realise how important it is to have him.

Interesting that when it was originally announced - Jake seemed more neutral as if keeping his options open, whereas Brundle's Tweets definitely had a hint of the "Sky is a bad thing" about them.
