Is that the one where he was stuck in gear? Never understood why that would be more tiring, should be less if anything?

Yeah it was, he was stuck in Fifth if I remember correctly, and I imagine its harder because the car accelerates slower at low revs, if you look at the Interlagos circuit, coming out of that final corner flat out, then braking into the chicane and then trying to accelerate out and still win the race has got to be exhausting both physically and mentally.

... or maybe they're just not going full tilt in practice.

Not really. The car looks different on the circuit.

During FP 1 to 3 you can see the RBR sliding on the limit and often the McLaren is faster.

Same in Q1 and Q2.

Then in Q3 there is magic and the car just looks different for one lap. Half a second different.

And when they get into the race they are not specially fast compared with the McLarens and Ferraris.

Whatever the Q3 button does it obviously has a huge cost, otherwise they would use it all the time. Maybe they are blanking their radiators and using dry ice or maybe they have a grenade engine programme. Who knows. We only just found they were using the exhaust to heat the tyres for a lap one advantage. The Q3 thing has got me intrigued.
