I'm not sure Webber would get much more out of that Ferrari than Massa currently is.

He'd have stuck it on the podium I suspect but yeah, I think Webber might be on borrowed time too, especially with 3 good young Red Bull drivers already in F1.

Yeah i know that, it was "the good" part i was questioning ... he got beaten in India by Narain who hasn't driven a car in anger this year.

And describing Buemi as anything other than utter drivel is a laugh. Algy has only recently started to get his act together after 2 and a bit years.

Apart from Vettel what has the Redbull driver program produced of note? Alright a double world champion is about as good as it gets, but the rest of the dross isn't even picking up sportscar seats.

After the Indian grand prix Hamilton said: "I was busy keeping my eye on my wallet, because I was stationed here during the war and I know what the locals are like and the next thing I know some dirty bugger nearly shunts me off the road.

"It shook me up so badly I had to switch off Chris Evans and stop into the garage to see if anybody got the feller's number plate.

"But they tried stealing my tires so I just drove off again."

I read somewhere a few weeks back that he's been blowIng his money at an alarming rate (think they had an example along the lines of chartering a private plane for to fly him back and forth across the Atlantic to go clubbing), so the F1 return does appear to have a strong financial motive. And as someone said earlier in this thread, Williams don't look they'll be delivering a car capable of anyhin beyond midfield obscurity, so it's not a logical choice if you're making a comeback just for the glory.

He won with a Toro Rosso.

He won with a redbadged Red Bull with a better engine.

Not to say it wasn't a fucking good effort but it was a damp race, he had a Ferrari not a Renault and the Toro Rosso back then literally was the same as the Red Bull apart from the engine mount points.

An interesting picture showing the power output of Ferrari F1 engines over the years. Just look at what the last of the V10's were pushing..

Yeah seen that before. The amazing thing for me is not the power out put of the V10's, but the power output of the 1.5litre turbo units (circa 1985/86)

but for me the acid test for the "one of the best ever" mantle is to win when you've got the second or third best car, and he hasn't done that yet.

That will never happen again. The overall quality of drivers now is such that it is impossible to beat a top driver in a top car. If you put Hamilton, Button, Alonso or Vettel in the fastest, they will win the championship.

In days gone past there has been windows of opportunity in the overall quality of the driver lineup where either the car is so strong the driver can be of lesser quality and still win (Damon Hill) or where the driver is so good he can overcome the cars failings (Schumacher) But now we are at a stage where we have 5 World champions racing at the same time, and possibly 6 next season.

Worth mentioning that Red Bull were a lower midfield team at the time, fighting for top 10 positions.

F1 does toss out freakish results from time to time. Hungary 97 is a good example. If not for a cheap part failing the utterly dogs**t Arrows would have won, and I don't think anyone would argue Hill (the younger) as being one of the 'best of all time' drivers.

Of all time clearly no. Of his time, absolutely. He was up there, if not quite at the level of a handful of others. He burned bright quick and faded just as quick.

I am a big fan of Damon Hill.

In testing he was consistently faster than Mansell, Prost and Senna, in the identical car.

So that means that he was truly exceptionally fast.

Also he was brilliant at car development.

But because he came to car racing late in his career he didn't have the racecraft of the very best. Which is a pity because if he had of, combined with that amazing speed, he would have been a multiple WDC.

Go to youtube and look at the in cars of his pole laps. Just awesome car control. So little done with the steering. Just using the throttle to balance the car right on the jagged edge.

In recent F1 the only driver to compare with Damon for outright speed is Kimi.

No, that means he was pushing hard in testing. Something you quite often see from a test driver trying to turn heads and get a full time drive.
