The Formula 1 Thread

Not so much a setup issue I wouldn't have thought - more that the Red Bull just produces huge amounts of downforce and can get away with it.

Interesting to see how protective they got of the front end of Vettel's car when he crashed, mind! Rumour has it that when Webber lost his front wing and crashed at Monza, the ever-so-helpful Italian marshals only managed to give Red Bull half the wing back. No one knows where the other half went, although you'd imagine it's probably being dissected deep somewhere in Maranello as we speak!

People noticed the wires running through the support pillars that were keeping what was otherwise a completely detached wing on the car when they lifted it.

I think during FP2 Ted Kravitz said those wires were quite normal and most teams run them.

EDIT: He said...

"I see there are already some rumours about the front wing on Sebastian Vettel's Red Bull and what the cables that stopped it falling off after his crash are for. But there shouldn't be. The cables are for a number of different uses. Some are for front-wing load sensors, others go to the onboard TV camera, which on the Red Bull is mounted very low on the wing pillars, where most teams have it on the side of the nose cone. Red Bull also have the ability to have front-tyre heat sensors - and the cables to those also run through the front wing."

Front wing theory.

In material science there are substances that change their properties on the application of an electrical current. Piezoelectric crystals and shape memory alloys for instance.

The theory is that RBR can use these to radically change the properties of their front wing when applying electricity to it. So effectively they get a scrutineering wing and a qualifying wing.

An interesting theory. A certain team (whose car includes the colour silver) were supposedly convinced during the early part of winter testing this year that Red Bull heated their front wings on the fly and got the required flex that way. There was never any way of properly proving it though so they couldn't do anything other than mutter about it.

The same person who told me the above mentioned that Ferrari were suspected of doing similar things during 2004 too.

I had also read that there was some grumbling about the plank and wearing at the start of the front of the diffuser. Some 'interesting' application of the rules.

But with Newey at the healm of design that's hardly a suprise.

I doubt it will ever be less than a second or two

For what it's worth, I was at Brands Hatch for the BTCC on Sunday with joinyrc.com . We had a TV playing ITV 4 Freeview and it was about 10 seconds behind what we could see on the track.

Heh, nah, covkartsport.com

Oh man, I've been on the lookout for something like that for ages. I'd love to do something like that if it was a bit more local, not sure I'd get buy in from the wife to be travelling all over the country every weekend.

I've tried looking but all the information I can ever find is for corporate or group bookings, there never seems to be any info about regular series.

I guess I just need to call them up and ask.

Edit: I've made another thread to save derailing this one: Here.

Fuck fuck fuck. I'm back in Canada now so be prepared to hear me moan like a fucker over the woeful presentation of F1 over here.

The program stopped just after the weigh in, I want to know what's going on with Lewis. The guy looked like he could punch someone.

And fucking Vettel, get pole fine, but fuck off with the yea baby bollocks. It's the sporting equivalent of the crazy frog.

Gah. Looks like I might have to do what some of you will be doing next year and downloading the race to watch it later. I can't abide adverts and zero pre/post show sections.

They should have bloody well sent him out sooner than. It's not the fault of Lewis slowing down, it's the fault of the team for not getting him out there onto the track 30seconds sooner when he would have had clear air. They should know by now not to give Vettel any chance whatsoever. Starting a flying lap with only a few seconds spare is hardly sensible, so focusing on him going slow throw the last corners when he should have been out long before is clouding the issue somewhat
