The Sopranos - Series 6

Reading back in the thread I can see loads disagree with me, baffles me but only because I believe so heavily in the signs and imagery that lead to me think what I do, but thats the cool thing about endings like that. Differing opinions.

Here's what Chase has said about the ending:

"I must say that even people who liked it misinterpreted it, to a certain extent. This wasn't really about "leaving the door open". There was nothing definite about what happened, but there was a clean trend on view- a definite sense of what Tony and Carmela's future looks like. Whether it happened that night or some other night doesn't really matter."

Therefore, I win. ;)

Although I understand where you're coming from there, I can't agree with what you're saying. Everybody knows that the lifestyle Tony lives only allows for two endings; assassination or incarceration.

We know Carlo flipped and T would soon be indicted. Whatever happened in that last scene, it is finally clear that Tony isn't going to find a magical way out of it all. I think I speak for the majority of us when I say that we as viewers, have spent the last seven years almost blindly hoping that Tony would somehow prove to be the exception to the rule. The last 8 episodes ultimately took this option away and showed T for what he really is; a villain. A likeable villain but one nonetheless. The episode with Chrissy dashed my last hopes for a happy ending. Which is stupid because deep down I always knew that despite my fondness for the characters, they were the bad guys. It had to go wrong for T at some point, whether or not he survived that night in the diner (and I believe he did) his story was coming to its end. He would soon be imprisoned for his crimes and who would want to see that?

This was as close to the perfect ending as I could have hoped for. I was dreading seeing him get murdered and I've been dreading seeing him wind up in prison, for life. It is clear that one of these two options is the ending he faces, I'm just glad I don't have to face it with him. I'm happy that the last thing I saw him do was sit down for dinner with his family, with some cheesey, overly optimistic music playing in the background. Same goes for Paulie, sitting outside Satriale's, sunning himself. :D

Through the whole last 10 minutes you are constantly waiting for something to happen, and this makes the ending even better as it puts you in tony's shoes. So yeah, a proper ending.

Totally. The best thing about the ending is that it puts you in the position of wondering where the danger is. The no matter where, with who, or what's happening this is the way of Tonys life.

To this day, I'm not sure if I liked the way it

LOL.

Anyway, just finshed it and loved the ending. Not read all that's gone before here, but for me what that ending really meant is captured by this guy here:

Quick summary:

The black screen is us experiencing Tony's death with him, via a bullet from the bathroom guy. It just ends, no sound, no flash, silence for eternity...lovely.

Is there a proper thread on The Sopranos? I'm guessing no, as search kicked this up first.

I think I'm going to watch this again, for what must be time number 4 (maybe?).

I've just been watching a few of my favourite scenes on YouTube. I still think this is it. The one:

It's a good analysis, but I'm glad it's all still open to interpretation. I always liked the idea of Tony dying in a really stupid way (which is flagged LOADS of times during the series, particularly when he has his fugues and does dumb stuff like drop on top of a barbecue, drive into a lamp post etc. Or the ridiculousness of being shot by his own deluded uncle) and if he'd survived another assault just to choke to death on some gabagool that would have had the same symmetry.

Oh my God. I watched that episode last night. Fuck, man. This is the first time I've rewatched the sixth season; it's incredible. The Junior/Tony bit at the end of the first episode took me me completely by surprise - for the second time. The subsequent episodes are just amazing. The best television ever made.

And that song. Fuck me. I've said this before and I'll say it again: The Sopranos has the best use of music, bar none.

Wow. Just finished watching season 6 after spending the last year or so watching it from the start for the first time.

I can honestly saying (after watching the usual Breaking Bad, The Wire, GOT etc) that this had some of the best moments in TV, and I could be pushed to say the best show ever.

The ending was really sad in the way a lot of the family had been killed off, and I genuinely felt sorry for people like Tony's sister, as well as Junior. The ending was jaw dropping, the most tense TV scene I've ever watched.

Oh man, the more I think about the previous seasons, and all the characters, the more sad I feel that it's over, and I want to re-watch it. Going to re-watch The Wire now I think.

Respect Tony Soprano

Having rewatched it all not that long ago, Gandolfini leaving us felt like a weird epilogue after the ambiguity of the series finale. Even having seen him in a few other things, he was so synonymous with that character and a heart attack while on a typically excessive holiday in Rome felt like the sort of mundane exit that Tony would finally take after so many unlikely escapes over the years.

Watching the end of Sopranos was utterly unique for me. I've since watched other brilliant shows - the usual ones we all love - but they just don't compare. Even seeing Breaking Bad end was completely hollow in comparison.

Mad Men is the only show that I'd say compares. Season 5 is up there with the best of The Sopranos.

Breaking Bad, while gripping and clever, is actually very shallow. You're caught up in the momentum first time round, but once you know the destination it doesn't hold up.

Indeed. I loved the ending to Sopranos and don't mind him answering that question in frustration, because obviously that's what happened. But let's not compare Sopranos' finale with Breaking Bads.

Breaking Bad was a fantastic show, probably in my top 5, but I like to pretend many elements of that final season don't exist. Move some family/character interactions a season sooner and not talk about Nazi's, then you can go toe to toe with Sopranos.
