These don't really fulfil your genre criteria, but I always enjoyed:

Ninja Gaiden (excellent game)

Psycho Fox

Rampart

Alien 3

Land of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse

Operation Wolf (with lightgun)

I played lots of Master System games over the years, but unfortunately none of the sought-after classics like Phantasy Star.

In addition to the many great games already pointed out, these two are fucking quality, and are almost always forgotten about:

Kenseiden - a true lost gem of a game.

Fantasy Zone 2 - The greatest 8-bit shooter ever made. Easy*.

*In my opinion of course. More than once I ve been tempted to start a thread explaining exactly why this game is So Damn Good.

Wonderboy III would have to be IMO the greatest 8bit console game. <_<

Also grab

Phantasy Star

Golvellius

Bubble Bobble

Rainbow Islands

Fantasy Zone

Shinobi

Alex Kidd in Shinobi World

Rastan

Xenon 2

I don't think there's any way you can play Jap games either, but honestly about the only one that didn't come out here was Rygar.

Power Strike 2 if you can find it.

Master of Darkness is an ok Castlevania rip off.

Bart Vs the world is very rare but a nice game

Theres plenty more and i'd suggest googleing for the quality sms websites out there.

The Brazilian games are worth going after if you wanna pay a few quid out.

a nice idea is to get the adaptors and play some of the old Japanese only games or do what DCM did and get a megadrive milticart with loads of olb sms/SG1000 games on it.

I've got an adaptor that lets you play any MS and SG1000/Mark3 games on the Megadrive. It's like a multiregion, multisystem MS in the form of a cartridge.

It's great being able to play Ninja Princess on the ol' MD and not have to get the Mark3 out.

I blinking love the MS. I blinking love old school Sega.

As the multi region issue, I believe the problems centre around the FM sound modules which means you may have issues with titles like Phantasy star.

I know that many of the codemasters games are a pain to run on a 60HZ SMS, my Japanese contact got around this by using a UK master system adaptor into a Japanese Megadrive.

I'd still suggest joining the sms mailing list as there's a lot more people out there with those sorts of setups.

Most of the appeal of the older pre sms titles are that they are decent-very good versions of classic era games, well worth persisting with as you get a lot of C64 games and Japanese arcade conversions.

James Bond 007: The Duel

It's miles better than the Mega Drive version!
Asterix

There are at least three MS Asterix games, only one of which I've played on the original console (the others only through emulators). The one I've played had a looping bit at the beginning where you have to block the path of a running Roman soldier.

Rampart is incredible. I seem to be in the habit of taking my Master System and Rampart with me wherever I live temporarily.

I store the console and game in a cardboard box which I've decorated with printouts of Master System consoles and publicity shots, as well as the cover for Rampart of course!

If we ever meet I'll buy you a pint AND a pack o' nuts.

I like your style.

Are you insane? Enduro Racer was a great game. I had hours of fun with it.

Dig it out mate you'll see what I mean. In spite of the pitiful Mean Machines review score I picked it up because it was in the £9.99 range. It was finished it within a day, I seem to remember once you bought turbos and suspension you could just hammer it the whole way through the game in a fairly straight line. Feeble value compared to the other budget classics like "Secret Command", "The Ninja" and "Rescue Mission".
