Halo 2. Pc

Eh? So they're going to release a two year-old port of an old FPS? Hardly a killer app.

To be honest, I'd have said this was bollocks, but it's up there on bungie.net so it's definitely legit. Is anyone really going to care about Halo 2 in late 2006? Did Halo sell at all on PC, anyone?

It's nothing about being a killer app. They sold a fair few copies of Halo 1 on PC and Mac, even though that looked old hat by the time it came out. Many PC boys wouldn't touch an Xbox and the chance to sneer at people with their hi-res Halo was more than enough temptation for some.

They'll likely find similar success with this, with the added bonus of selling a few £200 Vista licenses with it.

the first Halo on PC was just about worth it for the online component and the added maps, but Halo 2... pretty much redundant on PC i would have thought. by the time it comes out we'll all have our sights on Halo 3 anyway.

Exactly. A simultaneous release of Xbox360 and PC Halo 3 would be much more useful. Halo 3 might actually make proper use of DirectX 10 too.

Q: Is the release of Halo 2 for Windows Vista just a way to force consumers to purchase the new operating system?

A: Absolutely not.  Bungie Studios and Microsoft's steadfast commitment to quality determined that the Windows Vista platform would provide the best possible version of Halo 2 for the Windows PC. We will provide you with more details in the future.

It's possibly worth looking at this from another angle: Windows, Xbox, and Halo are some of Microsoft's key products, yes? So it kind of makes sense that they would want as much brand convergence between them as possible.

Regardless of whether it's commercially successful or not, regardless of whether any gamers think there's any point to it or not, it's probably worth it to MS just to have Halo 2 running on their latest OS.
