The Spurs Thread

Great xmas period for us, and in reality we could/should have had more goals in each of the Villa, Sunderland and Reading games.

I do think we need a little strenghtening in this January window as if Defoe or Adebayor gets injured we are down to basically one striker again. Reports today of AVB still chasing Willian and Damiao are welcome - the pace and attacking ability of Willian would be excellent to have in the squad (nice replacement for when Lennon/Bale arent playing too) and Damiao could represent another goal threat/future potential.

I really think we need a striker more than anything else, what if Defoe and Ade were both injured?!

I think that's why we signed Dempsey. As a third choice striker you could do a lot worse, and the rest of the time he's happily playing in midfield.

Honestly it is hard to see weakness now, that's what is so good at the moment. Lennon I think is probably our most limited player, and yet is arguably player of the season so far, consistent and effective performances from him.

The only trouble we have is at home against a team that puts 10 men behind the ball, we just lack the sort of player that can unlock defences in these situations. But I agree we do look very strong now and I really do think we will finish at least 4th this season.

AVB also impresses me more and more as the season goes on.

I suppose with Holtby our main 11 will look something like:

Squad:

--------------- (New Signing) ----------------

-------------------- Holtby ---------------------

Bale ----- Sandro ------- Dembele ---- Lennon

Benny ---- Vert --------- Kaboul ------- Walker

-------------------- Lloris ----------------------

Rotation:

Attackers: Defoe, Adebayor

Mid: Parker, Siggy, Dempsey

Def: Caulker, Dawson, Gallas, Naughton, Fryers

I'm more than confident we'll be signing a striker this window, especially if Ade decides to go to the ACN. Rumours are we're close to making a deal for Damiao. Our squad are really starting to look like we could step up to the next level.

AVB has distanced us from Damiao now, honestly I don't see it happening. I don't think it's necessary either, right now anyway, Ade will only miss a few games. He was injured for about as many already this season and if Defoe does get a knock Dempsey is capable to stepping up.

QPR and the return of 'Arry this weekend. AVB reckons Harry's knowledge of the players gives him an advantage. Maybe Bale has a button that if you push turns him back into an ineffective fullback.

Not a loss but still a very poor performance and Sandro limping off with what sounds like a bad injury. Have to wait and see.

It was another game where we just barrel into the defence over and over again, QPR might have looked under pressure but it would have been relatively easy for them to deal with defensively. Adebayor was absolutely dreadful again, I'd have much preferred Dempsey or Siggy to start this one, although I appreciate the logic of playing a big man against a team who were going to defend so deep.

Sandro is OK according to AVB's post-match, should be fine for next week.

4-4-2 with Ade and Defoe really doesn't suit the 'defending with their backs to the wall' situation, there needs to be someone on the pitch who can make the quick, clever passes and flicks. Could have done with Dempsey starting to provide that.

We're trying to get Holtby in early. He's nothing like Sandro but he's got pace and energy.

I think AVB has cancelled Livermore's loan to QPR. He lacks the quality of Sandro but he can fill the role without totally altering our style of play like Hudd does.

Maybe when Kaboul returns he can cover Parker for that position as well?

It's a blow either which way as Sandro has been arguably the team's best (certainly most consistent) player. He's really come on leaps and bounds from the player who had to come off at half time every game because he'd been booked and put on his last warning. And he's a great character.

Yeah it's a blow losing Sandro, but hopefully we can get Holtby early, and at least we have Parker and (hopefully) Livermore.

I don't mind Hudd, but he's prone to making mistakes and giving the ball away, but he does have his moments.

And we still need a striker.

Yeah we were really comfortable on the ball today bar a few errors, we didn't let them play around us like they're used to.

I've always had faith in AVB, I think he's shaping us into a consistent top 4 side (and it looks like in place of Arsenal). Overall an encouraging performance.

Yea I think our attackers didn't really show up today. Apart from Lennon who put in a great shift all game and of course Dempsey who made up for some ropey through balls with his last gasp equaliser. Defoe looked out of it and Bale was quite poor by his standards - he needs to work on finding space for himself, drop deep and get some of those driving runs going again.

I think it is a testament to what AVB did at Old Trafford that SAF showed up and looked to defend. They lined up as defensively as QPR! With Jones and Carrick basically playing as inside fullbacks, doubling up on Lennon and Bale with Rafael and Evra. When was the last time United were that frightened of Spurs?

Also I hope you all heard Jonathan Wilson pointing out about Lloris what I was saying (and others!) earlier in the season. He is so quick and good with his feet that it allows the team to play a higher defensive line, this keeps the defence, midfield and attack all in touching distance and basically means the team plays in the opposition half. Which worked wonderfully today. It just needs a little something to unlock defences when we have them pinned all the way back in their own area.
