Sometimes it's great being wrong. ^_^

Yea... but you can't help feeing that while Defoe's form is great at the moment, the team might benefit more from Adebayor. Likewise Friedel/Lloris. Still don't want to complain too much, a win is a win and the team looked good. I think things will really start happening for AVB now with that little bit of confidence and the team getting to know each other better.

It's good that they're both playing well when both have such obvious replacements waiting, as those replacements know they'll have to play damn well when they get the chance to get their shot. That chance will, I expect, be the Lazio game. Caulker has a shot of getting a regular spot too, Ekotto is out for a month so we may need to move Verty to LB for a bit. Naughton did OK today but we could have done with the extra width on the left.

Adebayor definitely brings more to the team in that lone striker role, he creates (and squanders) loads of chances but also brings more players into the game.

I hope things settle down now and AVB can get the team comfortable playing the system he wants. Still feel we are struggling to adapt to the loss of Modric and VDV, despite Dembele and Dempsey being excellent signings. It will take time but the squad is decent and thankfully we aren't in an unfortunate situation like Liverpool, wondering where all the goals are going to come from.

Yea Naughton was solid. I noticed the centrebacks were getting forward and playing quite wide when they did as well, both Gallas and Vertonghen had dribbles close to the flanks - you can see why his system never really stuck with John Terry!

We're clearly going to lack the guile and pure creativity of Modric and van der Vaart, but a direct approach can work just as well. Did anyone see Dembele just walk right through a Reading player like he wasn't even there? I also though Sigurdsson showed what he can do over VDV - he covered a lot of ground and popped up all over the final third and got back too. Let down a bit by his finishing (should have buried that chance when Defoe nicked it) and the killer balls he tried to play never quite came off. I think he just needs a bit of confidence though, he clearly has the right ideas.

Who actually wants to win this this time?

I do, I want to see some silverware as the League Cup feels a long time ago now, and I've been thinking more about Mourinho's philosophy of "win something and win it early" to get that champions mentality going. AVB has been talking it up as a serious competition and I think it is really, last season brought some new glamour to the Europa League thanks to Athletic Bilbao and Atletico Madrid showing they can humiliate the top English sides and play some truly top class football. I could live with that, as long as we don't suffer too much in the league.

Tonight's game - Lazio are really good, they finished 4th last season too which in the past would have seen them in the Champions League too so we've got that and Gazza in common. Was expecting a lot of the new signings to make debuts tonight - still expecting Lloris to come in but Adebayor is apparently injured - Dempsey to start ahead of Defoe maybe? I think Caulker may start ahead of Gallas and Huddlestone to take a midfield place. Beyond this I am not so sure, I think it might be first choices the rest of the way.

Really was a missed opportunity last night. Should and could have won the game but lacked that final ball and cutting edge up front. Lennon really needs to grow a pair when he finds himself in front of goal. Instead of trying to cut it back or loop a poor cross, he should just hit it and try to work the keeper. Lazio seemed content to let us have the ball for most of the game, so at times it looked like a training match and had the intensity of one. Sloppy mistakes in possession would have cost us against a better side, though.

We miss someone like VDV really, there are no real flair players left at Spurs now, its all just power and pace now, with very little footballing intelligence in the whole team.

Though apart from lacking the final ball, I thought we still played well against a pretty good Lazio team, we have needed to upgrade Lennon for a few years now, but for some reason this has never happened.

I wouldn't say there are no flair players. Bale, Dempsey, Sigurdsson, Dembele - even Sandro (and Hudd!) have good vision and the technical ability to do the unexpected. It just isn't as big a part of their game as it was to Modric and VDV and they aren't quite as good as it as those two. I don't even feel that was what was needed last night as the ball was put in the net three times - as AVB pointed out.

I do generally agree with your sentiment though and as I've posted before - VDV is going to be a big miss this season and would have been worth 'carrying'.

As Fulham fans sang to Berbatov - "Don't go chasing fullbacks, stick to the cigarettes and goals that you're used to". 2 goals and a MOTM performance when played in a team that supports his style. Rafa would have offered the same to Spurs.

I watched the last ten minutes of Hamburg's 3-2 defeat at the weekend - they were down to 10 men and Rafa played the full ninety, for a good portion of which he was playing as a sweeper.

I am still gutted we sold Rafa, it was the just about the first time we had ever signed a world class player at the peak of his career. He was awesome for us and really the team should have been built around him and he should have been caption too.

He is classy guy off the pitch too, he still tweets about Spurs, how much he loves us and the fans. I have this years Spurs calender in my study and for the rest of the year it shall be staying on November where a certain Van der Vaart is Mr November.

Continuing the Rafa circlejerk.

I read Rafa Honigstein's Bundesliga round up, apparently VDV personally bummed Dortmund (german champions don't forget) in the gob. Two assists and had the second highest distance covered in a 3-2 win - Hamburg's first of the season.

Meanwhile his replacement at Spurs gets subbed off at halftime after the team got outplayed by Queens Park Rangers...

(No offence to Gylfi, wasn't really his fault and I'm sure he'll come good for us).

I wont even bother watching it, we will never beat Utd. Even recently when we should have beaten them at home a couple of times, the mentality of our players has always let us down and we have ended up losing or drawing.

Maybe AVB has changed it a bit but I doubt it and I am predicting a limp performance and a 3-0 defeat.

didn't Spurs lead 2-0 at Old Trafford a few season back, you guys had them against the ropes all of the first half and for some unknown reason Redknapp stuck everyone behind the ball in the second United got one of those Old Trafford penalties and it ended badly.

But hey this is now and i'm cheering you guys on. I hope AVB doesn't make the same mistake.
