Good to see him take on the challenge of a different league, could help him get out of the rut he's been in. 

 

Reg has gone off to Atleti on loan too today, so that's all the players who were on the main out list gone. Think Tanganga & Gil might also go before Thursday but if not they can still fit into Conte's plans. Looks like Sarr will be sticking around too, maybe as a backup to Skipp who's going to need to really be eased back in after being out for so long.

Little harsh, i really wish Winks had pushed on and for a period it looked like he would but it was clear Conte didnt have him in the plans so good luck to him.


Winks went backwards mentally under Mourinho, as did all our midfielders. I think they were so scared of being dragged in public and then dropped for trying anything risky and giving the ball away that they all adopted a safety-first approach and just played the game facing backwards. See also Sissoko and Hojbjerg. It hasn’t helped that he’s been in the two worst team performances under Conte either - the FA Cup loss against ‘Boro where his stats were truly embarrassing, and the loss in the Europa Conference, where again he was unable to exert any influence on the game.
 

PEH seems like he’s finally managed to break the habit, but Winks hasn’t. Hopefully in a league with a little more time to turn and look upfield, he’ll remember how to play forwards.

Spurs still ahead of last season, looked average again and Son couldn’t score in a brothel at the moment - feels like damage limitation at the moment….

Agreed, the 8 point gain is a comforting stat.  I just wonder what happens to our turgid, counter-attacking football when the better playing teams come along - we could be in for some beatings.   But on the otherhand, I trust Conte and his staff to have a plan and perhaps we're doing almost exactly what we're meant to be doing.

I don't think so, the defence is solid and the counter-attacking play still seems to be functioning fine, it's when the team is expected to build an attack slower where the problems arise. Son's current form being trash isn't helping, but missing Romero and Bentancur especially hurt the system against West Ham. Saw the pass map on SC, it makes the problem really clear:

As well as the obvious massive arrows at the back, look at how how isolated Son is, how flat Sanchez is comparatively to Romero v Liverpool (indeed you can see he's still much more flat v Norwich compared to Davies too), and how little interplay there is on the right hand side. West Ham effectively shut down the whole right side by cutting off Sanchez, and with Son not firing on all cylinders the left side wasn't providing enough threat to even them out. 

 

I do think there's more Conte could have done though, and I don't really know why he didn't. Sess for Son and switch Perisic up the field, Doc or Spence to replace Royal later on and boost the energy on the right, for a couple of examples. Maybe some fatigue issues, or possibility of going out of the club for Doc (and perhaps Sarr)? I dunno, maybe he just thought "fuck it, they can get themselves out of this mess". 

 

Still, got a point, and things will come back together again, just hope it's sooner rather than later.

The positives are we are up on points, Kane is scoring, we have had a couple of tricky games and we haven’t really got going - add in some negatives (that are hopefully short term )with injuries and Son’s form and all round I think its been a decent start.

Great result and really loved watching Richarlison's goals.  Son didn't have the best game again, but I hopefully he has his usual blinder against City.

 

Getting used to not complaining about the so-so/turgid performances now, if the results keep coming then that's something we've not had before.  We don't concede many chances at all, and we've got a great attacking setup, just need some midfield tweaks now to ease the transition between playing out from defense through to attack.

Yeah, it’s the precision in midfield we’re missing at the moment. Too many attempted through balls intercepted, and some poor ball control from Hojbjerg and Perisic cost us three really promising counterattacks, among some pretty sloppy passes from most of the team. Didn’t help that Kane had an off-day with his passing too.

Indeed - just a shame Frankfurt got the win. Was hoping for a draw there to keep us a couple of points ahead.
