I like it, controversy aside.

That's a bargain for what you get i mean a printed single volume of the main title will set you back £6.99.

The Manga is due to finish in April, and the fourth season of the Anime started recently which is why they have released this bundle i would have thought.

It's one of the top-selling Mangas in Japan.

It has strong nationalistic and fascist themes. It's hardly Mein Kampf, but it's not difficult to draw some uncomfortable parallels with real life, if you know anything about Japanese imperial history. FWIW, I don't think it's going to radicalise anyone.

73p for Four Volumes of Attack On Titan Manga.

£14.75 for Twenty Six Volumes and a ton of other goodies.

Damn it, I've already filled up the SD card in my tablet with the ridiculously generous comics humble bundle last month, and now this?!

New SD card it is, then...

Just finished Monster. Wow! That was an amazing ride. I think it might be One of the best things I’ve ever read.

I agree, though many people say one of his other series, 20th Century Boys - which I haven’t read yet, is actually even better.

a while back Inio Asano got some flack from idiots after one of Urasawa Naoki's manga documentaries which featured him taking a piece of AV equipment used by the crew as the starting point for a piece of technology in his manga. His  design for the top of the mothership in DEAD DEAD DEMON’S DEDEDEDE DESTRUCTION has to be a purposeful giant fuck off to those people.

shit, that's probably a spoiler. Don't open if you aren't up to date :(

Can anyone say if Death Note is suitable for a 13-year-old? My son is interested in it, but I don’t know the first thing about it, and the only manga I really own is Akira.

I’m fine with some violence and bad language, but if there’s weird Japanese sex stuff in it, I’d rather know about that before he spends his Xmas money on it. Thanks.

There's nothing like that from what I remember. Beyond the premise, it's basically a cat and mouse game between two highly intelligent people where discovery means death. I'd be more worried about him being bitterly disappointed by the final third of the series but let him discover that for himself. It might be worth just getting the first volume to see how he gets on with it versus buying the entire series in one go?

On a different note, whilst its true that there is some fucked up Japanese manga, it's very much in the minority of published manga and there's no way that anything like that would reach the kind of global audience that Death Note has managed. It's not like the "glory days' of Manga Entertainment where they went out of their way to find all the crazy shit and then added in extra swearing to get those desirable 18 certificates (even if I did discover the various Cyber/Wicked/Monster City films and Akira that way :) )

Thanks, that sounds fine then. Yes, I come from that early 90s tradition of Manga video too, hence my apprehension :-)

It's a bit violent in a few places early on but nothing major. I let my kid watch it when he was 12 and it didn't scar him, though he did get bored about half way through and gave up on it.

Hoping for some recommendations for manga for my soon to be 12 yo son.  I know next to nothing about Manga - I’m more of a 2000AD fan.

He really enjoyed Naruto and My Hero Academia. Saw Death Note above but sounds like it’s not particularly highly rated. Any recommendations?

Cheers.

Get him a sub to the mobile Shonen Jump app (It's like what? 1.99 a month?) and turn him loose

He doesn’t have an iPad and I’d rather he didn’t spend more time in front of a screen than he already does!

If he's into Shonen then I'd reccomend (in order of quality):

One Piece: A story about pirates set in a vast world with hundreds of characters

(95 volumes, ongoing)

This is the best, hands down. There's no Shonen series that comes close, and if you enjoy it there's the added bonus that it's the longest thing in the world so you've got a lot to enjoy. It's a little slow at the start (I'd suggest reading up to the end of the story with the Baratie to see if you're enjoying it, which is the first 8 volumes), but overall it's got an incredible pace and always pays off. Consistently high quality for 1000 chapters, although enjoyment will change based on personal preferences for what type of story you enjoy. Light hearted and funny with some serious moments which increase in frequency as it continues.

Dragonball/Z: A martial arts superhero story with a small, tight cast

(42 volumes, 16 Dragonball - 26 Dragonball Z, finished)

This one is a classic, and might suffer from some beatles syndrome as it's the source of a lot of common shonen tropes, but it's endured and stayed popular for 30 years for a reason. If he doesn't enjoy OG Dragonball it's entirely viable to skip straight to Z which is cooler and less silly, but they're technically one long story. The manga is excellently paced, avoiding a lot of the endless screaming problems that people associate with the series because of the anime. You can roughly divide Z into three sections, and the first two are excellent. The third is worse but it's still pretty good. Very comic book in tone, never too serious but generally pretty cool, with occasional silly moments in Z and a lot more in the original series.

HunterXHunter: A story about travelling and meeting new people with a fascinating world

(36 volumes, still going technically but no new chapters for the last two years)

This one is a little dark, and it varies a lot in tone because each arc is pretty different, but it's a spectacular story with some excellent characters and some real heart to it's themes. Worth reading all the way through as it stays very good. Quite dark and depressing, but hopeful.

Bleach: A super power samurai ghost fighting story with magic swords

(74 Volumes, finished)

This one starts off very strong, and the first two arcs are brilliant. After that it kind of goes off track and never really recovers, but the third arc is ok. After that there's a long shit section and then it picks up a bit at the end. Silly and fun at the start, gets more serious and occasionally gets a bit grimdark.

The penultimate Attack on Titan is out! It's amazing as usual. I only got into this off the back of the recent humble bundle but its a really great Manga and I've loved caning through it over the last month - just in time for it to finish up!
