Manga

Everything by Urasawa is great. Monster especially.

There is loads of stuff written for older audiences, even when you discount the porn and ultra-violence. Not so much of it gets licensed for official release in the West though. Viz publish Death Note, a psychological thriller about a detective trying to catch a supernatural killer. It was originally only supposed to be a shorter tale, about six volumes long, but due to its popularity the editors of the work convinced the author & illustrator to extend the story. It shows, with the second half of the tale not being anywhere near as good as the first, but if you do pick it up and enjoy it, then it serves as a great reference point for their next work, Bakuman, which is a semi-autobiograhpical tale about two young men who want to create a best-selling manga.

Thanks for the recommendations. Looking forward to checking them out. I've heard of Death Note. Monster is already on my list, as it's by the same author as 20th Century Boys, I think...

I'm in Japan, so recommendations of manga not released in the west are also welcome.

So in a fit of boredom, I picked up something that had been mentioned a few times: One Punch Man

Story basically revolves around an utterly average looking hero who can defeat any manner of ultimate monster in one punch. Some fantastic looking art with Gintama-esque humour. 21 chapters so far but highly recommended.

Haven't read any manga in years so picked up the full collection of Rayearth by Clamp for a couple of quid on Ebay (stuck dust mark on the cover that came of in, like, one wipe) and the bf got an excellent buy yesterday at the charity shop - all 6 volumes of Akira for £40.

My week off is sorted.

Read through all of Claymore up to date, aside from a lot of the warriors looking so similar that I confuse them it was brilliant.

That and the fact that it's a monthly which means that I've forgotten the last chapter by the time the next one comes out...still great though

I am thinking of getting back into manga. What is popular? I am seeing a lot of bleach and naruto. Which is better? I want to re-read Dragonball Z as well, maybe Dr Slump.

Artists I particularly enjoy are: Akira Himekawa, Masumine Shiro, Akira Toriyama, Masashi Tanaka and Katsuhiro Otomo...based on that what would be a good choice?

Naruto is much better than Bleach but One Piece is a bit better than Naruto. If you like DBZ and that kind of things it's well worth checking out Eyeshield 21 as well. And as always, Battle Angel Alita and Battle Angel Alita: Last Order are the best things I've ever read in any format.

Naruto was great this week, it's really getting into it now and starting to feel like a proper conclusion.

Guys, many thanks for the recommendations. I am giving naruto a go as well as one punch man.

One punch man in particular appeals to me. It seems to be a bit of a pastiche on american comic book heroes. Love it.

I've started reading Attack on Titan (Shingeki no Kyojin), it's decent fun, if a bit overwrought as this sort of book tends to be. The titans are genuinely creepy which is cool. I'd never really considered the concept of being eaten by a giant to be that horrible before.

Some less than stellar scanlating going on though, guys in a pseudo-medieval future shouldn't be using phrases like douchebag or butthurt

There's no shortage of zombie apocalypse manga, but I am a Hero is one of the better attempts I've read. It follows the tale of a socially dysfunctional manga assistant who has to survive the sudden collapse of society. Deals not only with otaku culture, but hikikomori and stuff.
