The House Music Thread

Been listening to a few of my old tapes and been trying to put names to faces using Shazam and Sound Hound, they've gone to absolute shit. I remeber using Shazam around 2012 while I converted a shit ton of my tapes to MP3 and was blown away how many hits I'd get with old obscure House/Acid/Early Rave stuff. Tried over a dozen tracks today and got one hit, a good one but still. Definitely cleared their memory banks and focus on popular stuff if today is anything to go by.

The hit from Shazam off one of my old radio recorded tapes. Classic mind.

No, sorry, I'm using the word tracks as I would songs, they're just tunes from myriad different radio stations I'd be recording back in the day and mixtapes off people or from clubs/events. No track listings or clues to what's on them, a real hodge podge but an absolute goldmine of old House etc going back to early 88.

I found an absolute ton of names and matches about a decade ago using stuff like Shazam and entering snatches of lyrics into google, I know it named much more obscure stuff than I had it listening to today. I used to have fantastic Youtube playlists made up from the last time I did this, dozens and dozens of tracks, they've all been removed over the years too.

Was only having a bit of fun today but it added to my observation that the internet may be much more technical than a decade ago but it certainly seems to be obliterating a lot of things that made it more fun. Seems like a lot of things get lost to time, perhaps due to shut servers and websites. I remember putting terms like "I control the body old house tune" or sample etc and I'd be either directed to some decent and relevant to the search forum posts or message board about House music or would find the track via Youtube in a few jumps. Fuck all like that today, no matter what I typed.

It may all still be there, but it's definitely a lot more difficult to find. And Shazam is 100% more geared toward less obscure stuff than it used to be. It used to blow my mind how good it was. Yeah, this is all vague and pretty obscure stuff but I know, without doubt, I searched in a similar fashion to today and 9 times out of 10 would get a name or video back then. Was pathetic today.

Oh well.

Oh, it got another one, one I tried whilst typing the above, just to make me look a dick, one I really should have already known the name of as well. Its from the same taped Sunday night radio broadcast that the track above was also on. Well done Shazam.

Right, gonna have a glass of wine and spend an hour putting my ballaching to the test. See if I can get any more hits from Shazam. Will post any decent tracks here. Only good stuff and won't type anymore chatter. Hopefully Shazam will prove me wrong and name a few classics for me.

Andy Barker of 808 State has died aged 53. They were great back in the day and on it pretty early doors. Loved the 808 State Radio show on Sunset Radio, always playing the latest and greatest tracks with some funny scally interlude, laughed many a time when sat there recording it, definitely more laughs than Stu's show.

That's a fairly early cracker of theirs I posted up there, though I think that's when Gerald (A Guy Called) was still with them so no Andy, yet, unsure? here's probably their most well known and one he definitely had a hand in-

And a couple more, ones I was definitely inclined to get on up to, at the time.

Massive.

RIP Andy, had some boss feelings/times to a lot of your tracks. Reading a bit about him due to his passing it says he came to the scene through a love of Electro, didn't we all Andy, didn't we all.

Yeah, was drunk as a skunk last night and posted they were the best songs ever or some other bollocks. I sometimes wake up and have a dread that I've done something bad whilst drunk, like bought something silly and expensive, texted that I love someone or applied to join a cult, shit like that.

Anyway, I hid it in my hungover blitz of anything I may regret. Sorry, should have just deleted any embarrassing ramble instead of hiding the full post but I was really, really hungover, still am, really.

They are tremendous tracks though.

Even for a YouTube video that has a really distinctive sound quality. He must've been saving his pennies as that is some setup. On the subject of esoteric DJ tackle, I saw Awesome Tapes From Africa a couple of years ago and he was playing crusty audio tapes from a market stall in Benin or something from a pair of vari-speed cassette decks. Huge respect for anyone willing to fly by the seat of their trousers like that.
