The House Music Thread

Hahaha. Crazy days. When E's were E's an all that. Talking of being a snob I always remember the Prodigy jumping around on stage at the Eclipse just as Charlie was getting mainstream traction and me standing still the whole set. And I fucking love the Prodigy. Things you do when young.

Just been listening to Live & Direct on cassette. Yes cassette haha. Fucking brilliant album. For a very short window Adamski was hip as fuck (until he was all up in the charts). Proper Blackburn Warehouse chills.

His earlier stuff is the best but I always loved this, specifically this 12" mix.

Can You Feel It - How Dance Music Conquered The World.

BBC Four tonight 10pm

I thought that was something from 'It's Great When You're Straight...Yeah' from the thumbnail@Stanley Good tune.

Nothing new in that BBC4 doc but good to watch. I was hoping they'd play the first House song I ever took notice of which was Adonis We're Rocking Down The House which I caught after Stu Allan's Bus Diss Hip Hop show on Key 103 in about 87. I used to tape the show and caught about 30 minutes of early House afterwards. Loved it straight away and soon tuned in just to that show and taped it every week for years. Had all the early Chicago stuff on and later down the line the Acid House stuff which I was just discovering was liked by a few older peers. Next thing is I'm a total cheesy quaver and going on all kinds of adventures. Good to see A Guy Called Gerald on there, he was a genius, loved his Hot Lemonade album.

That's almost techno, not my cup of tea. Neither is this from 1984, which is almost house, certainly electro. (see vid below)

Even some disco from the 70's is very close to early House.  Chicago is certainly where it started i think.  House is such a broad term anyway.

My favourite Adamski story is when I saw him play live supporting Big Audio Dynamite, I think @Dave White was there too? Anyway we were going towards the Royal Court theatre in Liverpool and a bloke in a battered old estate pulls up, loads of gear in the back, wires hanging out the window, asking if we knew where the Royal Court was. We told him he's here - great, he said, I'm the support act. This was like half an hour before he was due on stage :D

Oh Christ yeah I think it was Glen Matlock out the Pistols and perhaps Steve Jones too in their new band. Remember their wives/girlfriends giving us filthy looks!!

Adamski was the first live act I ever saw on my own when I was 17. It was in 1990. I Took a train from deepest darkest Wales to Liverpool.

Funnily enough, at the Royal Court (which was mentioned above).

He was blown off stage by the warm-up act...E.M.F (before they had released Unbelievable)

I remember reading or hearing he ate a dodgy meat pie or something and went a little strange. Could obviously be bullshit but the amount of drugs flying around I wouldn't be surprised. Also more Heat magazine style gossip was that he fell out rather spectacularly with Seal after he became much more famous. Doubt Seal gave a shit to be honest. Man I feel dirty writing such piffle.  And a big thumbs up for B.A.D they shone very brightly for a while.

Oh and better post some house. Here's a classic that was sampled, mixed and pilfered into oblivion in those early days.

You sure it wasn't the same night @Dave White and @Stanley saw him? And it was indeed Big Audio Dynamite you saw and not E.M.F.. No disrespect to B.A.D because they were far better and musical than E.M.F but they had a slightly similar in your face big beat and synth sound. I'm in no way saying you don't know the difference between the two acts but perhaps the mists of time and all that.

EDIT* Saying that you'd have known who was the main and who the support was so I'm thinking nonsense as DW and Stanley saw him as support and from your post he was the main act. Apologies.

Have you thought about letting the people in the Rock'n Roll thread know about Elvis? :D

I saw them at Canterbury Uni around the same time, just before they went big and it was insane, sadly didn't think the records captured their live sprit.

Love a bit of Spooky - was reminiscing earlier about seeing them live at the Big Love festival in 1996.  Land of Oz was on Dub House Disco 2000, one of the first house compilations I ever bought.

Still love Charlie May - here he is, killing it with Sasha at the Barbican last year:

Urgh I hate what that became. I used to love Sasha and still love his mixing style, for a guy who supposedly hates his 'progressive' tag, he doesn't do much to discourage it.

I also hate these classical covers of House tracks shows too. If someone told me in 1989/90 that this thing would turn out like that and that it would be almost entirely populated by talentless hack chancers I would have given it a wide berth as the most uncool wank load of bollocks ever.
