Sega Rumor-o-rama: Rez Psp

Something else came up in the discussion that was rather intriguing: a PSP port of United Game Artists' Rez. This too is sounding like a pretty sure thing. If you're unfamiliar with Rez (PS2, DC), it's a 3D floating-through-space shooter that has an incredibly clever synthesis between music and gameplay, with the electronica soundtrack building up in time with the player's actions. The game was designed by Q Entertainment founder Tetsuya Mizuguchi, who recently designed Lumines (PSP) and produced Meteos (DS). Anyway, with this upcoming port as well as the once impossible to find PS2 version of Rez being made available again, you shouldn't have any problems getting your hands on the game if you desire.

Finally, the latest issue of Electronic Gaming Monthly reports that Virtua Fighter 5 will see release on PlayStation 3, "and it might be [home console] exclusive." My source didn't have any information on that particular rumor, other than assuring me that arcade version is "great."

:(

It's nice to have variety, and all that, but I don't think I'd go for it. The experience for me of the original was totally relaxing in my living room whilst the big screen filled up with all kinds of crazy visuals and the room was filled with throbbing, evolving beats. I can't see the tiny screen + headphones providing the same experience. I suppose with high quality headphones the sound would be good, but I like having it fill the room. It's not the kind of game you'd want to play on the bus.

Exactly.

True. When I play Rez at night, with no distracting glare or anything in my peripheral vision, it's very immersive.

Not an unwelcome addition though; I'm sure it would still be enjoyable. And the control will be fine, even if they had to do it on the bloody D-Pad.

I think the control would just about work on the PSP. Definitely one for the headphones or an amp though.

To be honest I think the controls would be much better suited to the DS. Hold a button, tap your targets and shoot. Great controls, though I'd be surprised if the graphics hardware was up to the job. Still, there's already a rumble pack for the machine.

But in the end it may well be one of those things that wouldn't work on any handheld. By far the best thing about Rez is when you find yourself lost in the visuals and the beat. It might be hard to achieve that on any handheld.

EDIT: Actually thinking about the graphics in Rez they're very abstract anyway. I'm sure they could lower the poly count significantly and still keep the same Tron meets a class A drug feel.

Have you played lumines? Because when lumines can manage this for a falling block game, then there is no reason for rez not to do the same.

My comment about lowering the polycount was an afterthought to me saying the DS couldn't handle it. There's no doubt the PSP could, it's graphics seem at least as good as the Dreamcast.

Only played Lumnies for a brief spell, it's clearly great but not played it long enough to get immersed.

Having thought about it for a bit, I guess there are handheld games I've found immersive. Tetris is the oldest one I can think of. More recently I found Ouendan draws you in too.

Ok, I retract my statement. I guess there are immersive handheld games. Hopefully Rez can recapture it's glory.

Fantasic news, but I'm holding my breath until any kind of official announcement... Rez gives me tingles just thinking about it. I think it can finally jusitfy my psp purchase after the disappointment of GTA.

I've got a problem though... clearly Level 5 is going to look (mind) killer on a white psp but the rest of the levels will look better on the black model...

Oh, and isn't Mizaguchi working on Every Extend at the moment? Will he have a hand in this? If there is going to be any new content I'd like him to have input

How can you be so sure it will?

It's far from a complex control system :)

The control system is not my problem. The psp however is.. Have you ever tried to use the psp control nub thingy for any length of time? It's almost impossible. I swear the fucking thing must have been playtested and approved by Jeremy Beadle because no one with normal sized hands can use it.
