Computer Spec Needed To Play Wow Full Settings

Recommended Posts

I am buying a new pc and want to know what i need to play wow full spec. At the moment i play it at the lowest spec possible to stop lag in raid groups but im tired of it so have saved up some money and want to purchase a computer that even at the highest settings will not lag under the pressure.

Any suggestions would be appreciated i know when it comes to graphics cards there can be some arguement but something to aim for would be nice.

I have

Athlon 64 3400

1gig RAM

6800 GT

Runs constant at 50FPS even in raids, drops to 25-35 in Ogrimar tho. All settings maxed out

A PC like this should only cost £500-600 these days too

QFT

A 6800 and even an amd 3000+ can knock out the game on max settings, it's really not a game that requires an awful lot :)

1gb of ram. Priority.

QFT...

EDIT:

Just to add I’ve run it on the following:

Athlon 3200+ (overclocked 2500)

Radeon 9800Pro

1 gig ram

and currently

Athlon64 3500+

7800gt

1 gig ram

tbh, naff all difference in real terms between the 2, my new system looks ever so slightly better and I can run with AA and AF on but it’s the 1 gig of ram that makes the biggest difference (Org/Ironforge/AOE lagfests not withstanding)…

My PC was on a VERY tight budget - less than £400 with a licensed copy of XP - which got me (last year)

Sempron 2400

1Gb RAM

Radeon 9600PRO

2x IDE 80Gb

On 1280*960 I get 25-30fps everywhere except Orgrimmar and in MC/AV - dropping the resolution even to 800*600 doesn't really make much difference to the fps so it's not 'graphics lag' I guess...

AV is a lag-tastic experience for most people tho - we're talking LONG pauses and stutters pretty-much constantly...

MC - often drops to <10fps :(

Only thing which improves MC is playing 'Windowed mode' for some reason - an extra 5-10fps on offer and I can see my Winamp and Messenger at the same time - I prefer full screen for 'immersion' purposes tho :(

Upgrades planned are - in this order

3rd SATA HDD (Windows, Swapfile and WoW on separate buses/drives)

Faster Processor (3200XP is my max)

Better GFX - but only if I can get a 9700PRO or 9800PRO cheapish

Any comments/ideas on that lot would be great :)

Bear in mind tho - apart from PvP perhaps, WoW is NOT a twitch game and doesn't need 40+fps - I've played 1000s of hours with what some people would call 'awful' fps and I'm still quite happy thanks :)

It's also DAMNED good looking even in medium settings IMO :)

A bog standard 9800 pro would do you proud, the 9700/800 cards truly are excellent value for money these days.

I run it on a 9800 pro no probs at all. As said else where ram makes a big difference, when i 1st started playing i had 512mb and upgrade to 1gb was very noticeable. Alsoit does seem to hammer the hard drive so if you can get SATA rather than IDE that should make it run that little bit sweeter too.

And John, thats pretty much the upgrade i just did for my brother and wow runs like a dream now  Used an Asrock mobo that supports pci-e and agp, so there is stll room for a gfx upgrade at some point in the future too.

Make sure that if you get a computer that doesn't have 1GB of RAM built in, that it can be easily added to. I bought a laptop with 512MB RAM for playing WoW last year, thinking I could upgrade to 1GB later. However, I now find my laptop only has two memory slots ... and of course they used both of them, which means I can't just buy one 512MB stick and add it in to make 1GB total. I'm now a bit stuck as to how to upgrade, especially when I'm not supposed buy more memory 'just to play WoW' (relationship order).

It's definitely playable with 512MB, but not on max settings and there are times in Orgrimmar when I can hardly move. I haven't dared try Alterac Valley yet (though I could switch to our other computer, which now does have 1GB RAM, but none of my addons or DAB settings) and I'm probably going to crack up when the expansion comes out.

The only real diff I noticed going from 512K to 1Gb was that it's possible to alt-tab out of the game without it taking 3/4 of a hour of disc thrashing - an upgrade is advisable tho :(

As for settings and mods etc. etc. - you can copy the ENTIRE c:\world of warcraft\... folder if you want - WoW doesn't install anything other than it's files and a few icons - this is confirmed and supported by Blizzard, no need to reinstall from scratch.

You are supposed to delete the WDB, WTF and Interface folders before running the game - however Interface only contains mods and so can definately be left as-is and WTF contains account settings and 'savedvariables' for your mods but not sure it's copyable - can't hurt to try tho!!

If I really really want to do AV sometime when the 'big' computer's not in use, I might just give that a shot. Ta.

Would I get at least 30fps at all times, including Alterac Valley and during a 40 man Molten Core raid, with one of the new iMacs? The specs are:

1.83GHz Intel Core Duo processor with 2MB shared L2 cache

1GB RAM

160GB Serial ATA hard drive

Slot-load 8x double-layer SuperDrive

ATI Radeon X1600 graphics with 128MB GDDR3 memory

I don't think anyone gets 30fps consistantly in Molten Core but that machine should do an OK job of it.
