There's an interesting point in the news pages; Edge claims Namco expected to shift 500,000 copies of Ridge Racer 6. Do they mean worldwide, or just in Japan?

That's Japan only. Mind, weren't Microsoft banging on about how their marketing out there was so good they had silly Japanese people buying copies of Windows even though they didn't have computers. Still pretty optimistic.

they didn't have anywhere near that many consoles so unless they expected each custmomer to buy two or three copies...

my guess is that it's worldwide.

not a bad issue overall. i enjoyed the PS3 article, as i'm sure most open minded people did. Tony Hawks means nothing to me however.

The PS3 article was amazingly vapid. It's the Bernad Mattews of lead features - lots of shitty bits reconstituted to form a nice-looking but unutritous whole. A few quotes from lead publishers saying PS3 was the lead platform was new to me - wedged between six pages of rehash and hearsay. Anything for the toaster on the cover me thinks.

Aren't journalists meant to discover new things?

I completely agree. The constant asides about the Revolution read like fanboy drivel. And padding.

According to the internet it's Japan only they were talking about.

well clearly Edge has reported it wrong then. the original Xbox sold just over 100,000 on it's Japanese launch and the machine enjoyed a nice steep decline throughout the rest of it's (very short) life there. for the 360 launch Japan was allocated 160,000 consoles. so why would Namco estimate they'd sell 500,000 Ridge Racer 6's there?

I had a Spectrum and so did all my mates. Computing for the common people.

The 64 had better games though. And a much better sound chip.

The BBC was for nerds, who were chic for a while while they had Elite all to themselves.

I knew one Dragon 32 owner. He was weird.

No one seriously bought an Amstrad, did they?

On topic: have they fucked Crashlander off yet? It's shit.

I had an Acorn Electron, the BBC Micro for those on a budget.

Oh and Crashlander is still there, which this month contains the biting satire of a 360 "crashing" and the comment FXXK.

if they've (Namco) given themselves this 3 month launch window that Microsoft has bandied about then it's possible they might make this estimate but it's still highly unlikely.

What are you on about? They said they sell 500,000 of Ridge Racer 6 in Japan, no talk of launch windows or timescales.

They're not going to sell 500,000. The original Xbox only sold half a million and this new one is doing worse.

I found it quite funny actually, but maybe that's because I don't own a 360. I laughed out loud at the website address that the spoof XBox webpage in the cartoon offered for further information.

But the FXXK joke is an old Edge joke. Obviously. Nil points for that one. ;)

The most honest Spectrum owner ever.

Also, Crashlander is no worse than when it debuted; ie. it's shit.

you mean, Edge reported that Namco said they'd sell 500,000 copies at launch ? either Edge reported wrong or the figure is wrong - lost in translation or whatever. it's not that difficult to understand, particularly if you've read my other posts providing hardware launch figures.

so i'll ask you, what are you on about? you don't really believe Namco thought they'd sell that many at launch in Japan do you?

Can't bring myself to get beyond the first paragraph of that PS3 feature. Like that 360 tech interview last issue (or was it the issue before?) I just see this barren expanse of text and lose the will to live.

:(

Skip to the last two pages of said feature, it's much less tech-talk and more readable speculation.

Not one of the best issues, really. Biffo's piece was great, per usual, though, but the previews of absolutely shite games are just a waste of time, effort and space. As is the 6 page preview of Climax's MotoGP 06. Do Edge writers actually enjoy writing about that technical stuff? Does anyone actually like reading it? Stick a 6 page preview of a game with characters, a story, and new gameplay concepts in there instead, please.

PLEASE.

Also, design felt flat all the way through. I see Edge are still using that coloured ring idea in their news pages (one anomaly being one was an oblong shape, instead of round). They've been using alterations of that 'idea' for over a year now. The news story on sales was typically dull. I switched off several times trying to get through it. And the graphs. How exciting.

There's a lot of spelling errors in the mag too, moreso than usual. I see the concept art of the red-haired woman on Ninja Theory's advert is coming along nicely. I'm sure it'll the biggest, bestest, fastest, most epic game ever, ever, ever. Especially with a senior cutscene animator on board. Can't fail.

It's interesting you feel that way about the articles, as I'm of the opposite mind. The Climax piece is tech-heavy, but at least it's a genuine story. I don't mind speculative pieces, but when it's so general, and on such a significant issue, it doesn't amount to very much, really. I thought the PS3 piece was the weakest thing I've seen in Edge in a very long time and served no purpose at all.

Having said that, the feature on localisation is just great, and the news piece on sales, whilst stat-heavy, paints an important picture of the industry right now and was full of information that I haven't seen joined-up anywhere else.

As for the design, I thought the cover was the worst in ages, but inside seemed fine to me...

And I'm different too. I found the Climax article dull but the PS3 one raised some interesting issues. The sales feature was boring.
