Ridge Racer 6.

PAL RRV was quite possibly the shoddiest pal conversion this side of the '80s (the other major contenders being every single final fantasy game ever released here, ever). At least with RR6 the huge borders are due to it being proper widescreen, rather than a crap conversion...

edit:

in the interests of science*, i popped my old copy of RRV pal into the ps2, and indeed, switching my telly to the zoom setting designed for non-anamorphic widescreen SD does indeed give me more or less a full-screen, albeit still rather deformed, game (actually, there's a small black border on the right-hand side, and a tiny bit chopped off the top and bottom). So 6 is definitely a step up from that, if anyone here ever cared about RRV pal in the first place :D. And by christ, it looks rough now (not helped by the horrendous deinterlacing artifacts, even though this panny i've got usually handles SD sources pretty damn well).

*boredom and ~30 hours of insomnia.

[edit again: i'll stop editing this eventually, honest].

Had some great online races with this last night. I've mainly played with forumites thus far, however, I have played maybe 3 or 4 races with randoms and amazingly found everyone so far to actually be friendly and helpful while playing. What is the world coming to huh? Playing this online with randoms seems like a major breath of fresh air in comparison to PGR.

The guy's right though.

About what? That I need a new TV because some lazy cunts couldn't be bothered to cater for an aspect ratio still widely in use?

You can afford £300 on a new console but cant even spend £200 and a WS?

:(

Why bother when the vast majority of games are displayed properly on the TV I've got?

WS is minimum standard these days.

No it's not, 4:3 is. If it wasn't, 4:3 wouldn't be catered for at all. God, are you not sick of being wrong all the fucking time?

No like they're asking compulsory HD or something!

You're the biggest fucking moron on the forum.

Aren't 360 games designed with WS in mind, with 4:3 thrown in as an added bonus?

Exactly...720p and widescreen. I used to play my old crt in letterbox mode just to have a widescreen of some sort. You see more of the action in games and in something like Halo 2 online it was essential.

Calm down preacher man..dont think anyones tryin to piss u off.

It wouldn't make any difference to the fact that ignoring the 4:3 ratio is plain fucking stupid, would it?

If 4:3 were redundant, why still make 4:3 TV's? Why letterbox the display at all? Why not just force widescreen on a 4:3? I'll tell you why, seeing as everyone seems to have abandoned common sense - because it's lazy.

And it really is as simple as that.

Um... but isn't letterboxing forcing the display into widescreen anyway?...

No it wasn't/isn't.

4:3 tv's only make up a very small proportion of tv's currently being manufactured now though. They are mainly made for the small portable tv market.

But the important thing isn't the proportion being manufactured, but the proportion in use. And aren't a high percentage of consoles played on portable tvs?

Not essential, no. I do wish I'd played it letterboxed now though.

There's no reason why fullscreen 4:3 can't be supported and there's more than enough 4:3's out there to warrant it. You can argue that all you like and derail this thread even further but it's a fact you'll be hard pushed to contest.

So don't bother.

When we had a 4:3 TV I was happy to watch things letterboxed, purely because I was seeing the whole picture. If Namco want to make a 16:9 only game and force 4:3 viewers to letterbox it in order play the game how they intended, they're more than entitled to do that. If you don't like it, don't fucking play it, or buy a widescreen TV.

But for God's sake, stop moaning about it.

Come on, I've never put anyone on my ignore list. And after all, it's not that I don't like what you've got to say- I'm just putting your warped views straight.

So anyway, does the PAL version of RR6 run like shit online unless you disconnect from your PC in the System menu? Connecting it to your PC again is a bit of a pain (entering the codes and all that), I don't think I can keep doing that.

All I did was turn off media connect on my PC. That didn't work. You need to turn it off in the last slat of the dashboard too. Then it's fine.

No it wasn't/isn't.

of course it was, the widescreen image on halo shows extra field of view not available in 4:3. dont believe me? thats ok but it is true...believe me but disagree? well in competitive play that extra vision counts for a lot.

i think you're just angrily defending 4:3 tvs...but unfortunately its a fact that you see more in widescreen on halo 2.
