Ridge Racer 6.

Meh

Recommended Posts

I started playing with the interior view but couldn't really get on with it all that well, so moved onto the exterior view and found myself doing much better. It's my first home console Ridge Racer game so I'm not down with the traditions.

I do keep pushing the right thumbstick left and right to see beside me though, too much PGR

I'm still having a lot of problems - dunno whether it's my (previously fine) 360 or whether it's my copy of the game.

I'm getting crashes on loading some tracks (re-attempt a few times and they'll eventually work) - the scrolling loading tips completely freeze, or they constantly scroll without the two pauses you normally get when it loads successfully.

I also get it crashing after a race (very rare), whereupon I'll have to complete the race again.  I've had a fucked-up speedo (bad texture), which didn't really impact on the experience.  I've had it hanging on the Pac-Man game on load-up.  I've had it loading a track and all the textures in the world being screwed.  I've had it loading fine, but no music.  I've had it being otherwise fine, but with one section of the track (like a bridge) having fucked polys - as if the verts have been pulled all over the place.

Some of this happens after a while, which I can attribute to a heating problem, but some of the above can occur on a cold (first game of the day) boot-up.  Most odd and extremely annoying.

I've played 17 hours of RR6 and I haven't had a single one of the problems you have described above.

Yeah, I was already thinking that because no one else had previously mentioned having any issues with it. I'm going to have to try my copy on a friend's machine and see what happens.

As I said earlier in the thread, PD0's been fine and I've probably played that over longer periods than I have RR6.

I done a few time attacks tonight. Class 4 only and on one track I was 32nd in the world! In summary - there is still no one setting any times. I've added Squirtle to my friends list and bph is already there. Hopefully I will be able to find out how good / shit my times really are. Most times I have set I have only had one go at the track.

6 new car unlocks and music tracks have just appeared on the Marketplace just in time for you lucky PAL gamers.

The cars are free, the music ain't (80 points each). Like a mug, I'm buying them all - gotta love those Ridge tunes

Are these compatible with the USA version then or what?

I'm guessing so, the one's that were on the Marketplace a couple of weeks ago worked fine. I'll test them in a minute.

Edit: Both music and cars work fine with the US Version. I was looking in Class 4 originally for the cars but they're all Class 2 cars.

I've THINGS to say.

Widescreen only? I thought they were fucking joking but after several attempts to get Ridge rendered in 4:3 without massive black borders, I got the rage. Maybe I missed it first time round or maybe nobody bothered to mention it but so it won't be glazed over again;

EXPECT BIG BLACK BORDERS IF YOU'RE PLAYING IN 4:3

I'll keep the rest brief;

I'm about 4 hours in and one player is a slog. It takes 30 fucking races before anything like a challenge is forthcoming, with 1st guaranteed for Ridge veterans by the end of the first lap. Even if further races do prove more challenging, it doesn't stop the game kicking off with all the vigor of an elderly fucking stroke victim.

Like the cars - they're boring as fuck. Some look nice. Some look like Nissan Micra's decorated by 12 year old girls. The others - namely anything boasting "dynamic handling" are joke cars or some shit, judging by their crap handling.

Multiplayer's alright.

But people are good and probably better at it than you. If it weren't for the nitrous factor, the (lack of) depth in Ridge wouldn't lend itself to Multiplayer. Thinking about it, it never has until recently, has it? Other crappy stuff includes the inability to choose your music before an online race and, here's the funniest problem;

You can't use custom soundtracks online. If your PC's talking to your 360, you'll get juddering - something between lag and a shit frame rate - on every online race you play. Nasty shit.

Hate this.

It's underwhelming. Baffling in some ways, lovely and familiar in others but ultimately a big disappointment. I mean, it even looks crap, with the best of the games visuals almost exclusively shown during the moments before the race. Saving grace is the music, easily the best in any Ridge ever; catchy, thumping, everything you'd want. Even the less agressive, beat-lead stuff gives life to the least-engaging tracks Ridge has.

I dunno. I'm quite gutted. It's not bad, not broken (well, not in a gameplay way) and it's totally Ridge, only more boring. More grey. Greyer than V, for fuck sakes.

The game feels kind of slow until you reach the class 4's. It's too easy until you complete the first three main routes. That took me 15 hours! The difficulty then goes vertical and it's a much, much bigger challenge. Graphically it looks really solid with some nice bits & pieces going on in the background. No pop up to be seen but the game looks kind of 'washed out' at times. The cars look how Ridge Racer cars have always looked. Online multiplayer is good fun but has a massive flaw. The winner of the previous race starts on pole, the person who finished 2nd starts 2nd in the next race etc. Surely these positions should be reversed throughout the field?

Imo it's a great game, better than I expected. Sorry to hear you are underwhelmed. Give it more time.

Been playing thsi for 2 hours now. It more then justifys the 360's existance for me. The next gen is here! So far its business as usual. I dont find it the least bit boring. The initial tracks look kinda mundane but that quickly changes with the intro of the 1st night track, rage city and airport circuit. The design of the the city and tracks is great with a mix of wide open tracks and wild tracks.

Has a very european feel to the tracks this time

I've just recieved my UK copy of this, started it up, got into a game and there they were, went back to the menu screen, realised that they were there too, went through the menus, nothing to turn them off, went into the dash board, standard tv still selected.

I activated cry mode.

I guess this is going to be just as bad when I get my vga cable and connect it up to my 4:3 monitor. Way to go Namco.

The only other option is to force widescreen on a 4:3.

it looks shit.

Great, so I'm actually doomed to be forced back to the archaic ages because Namco didn't have the forward thinking that some people just dont have the room to fit a widescreen tv just dont have the room to fit a widescreen TV. So until I move, I'm doomed to live with 1.5 inch top and bottom borders.

It's just not good enough I'm afraid...

Check out dem curtains. And the vodka bottle beside the TV.

Fucksakes, your TV is big enough for the widescreen mode to still look decent. Mine was about the same size, and I forced it into widescreen for every game.

FOR. FUCK. SAKE!!

Do you guys cry and piss yourselves as much when you watch a widescreen DVD?!

Only a moron would want to watch a pan and scan film, and these games are presented in a widescreen format. It's not the fucking end of the world. This attitude seems to be a hang over from the days of bad PAL conversions; big borders = BAD!

I would prefer to see something as intended rather than cropped at the sides.

Fuck this Forum, never have i come across a bigger bunch of misserablists in my life. i'm surprised you still go on living after your desperate outcrys over things that DON"T FUCKING MATTER!

OH NOSE!!! my poor mistreated 4:3 display!!!

No I can accept films are widescreen because films are designed to be filmed in a widescreen format, the fact that RR6 is fixed in widescreen and cannot be adjusted is purely down to lazy rushed programming, PGR3 can be played in Widescreen or Standard and so can PDZ, so why not RR6?

There is absolutely no good reason for it and it's just not good enough.

It can? :(

It always chucks out the borders or comes out stretched on my Dell 17" LCD depending on the res.

Seriously though, have a wank.

Ok, just got this and the announcer is driving me a bit crazy with things like, "I'm glad it's just a game!"

Somebody please tell me there is beat em up mini-game where I can punch him repeatedly hidden somewhere.

Also my first impression is that you don't get a great sense of speed to start with, does this improve later?

Oh, and widescreen ftw.

No, but you can turn him off in the options screen.

Yeah.

Oh don't - Kevvy will come and shag you in the face if you mention it.

The only thing that annoys me about the announcer is the amount he says the word "Nitrous".

In other news, the track Airport Lap is fucking awesome! :(

--Edit--

Just counted, he said it 16 times in one race

Bit excessive tbh :D
