The thing to remember is that whilst you may not be a lazy journalist you have appalling grammar for someone that writes for a professional publication (I use the word 'Publication' loosely as your magazine is probably one of the worst video games magazines around (ABC 10K) and that is saying something) so I hate to imagine how you managed to qualify from any sort of journalism course.

Im not here to pick apart your career choice though as much to try to explain why you should never mark a game down just because it might be a niche title. Maybe its not you I should be speaking to, but rather the dumbass editors of your magazine who make a man who blatently isnt a fan of a genre review a game from it. Thats like making a golf fan review FIFA/PES, and give it 5/10 because he doesn't understand the rules of the game.

Ikaruga *is* a hardcore title (which incidentally according to Penny Arcade is second fastest selling game on XBLA ever at around 20K Units) and as such should be reviewed by a hardcore gamer who is a fan of the genre and can appreciate the fact that treasure are still one of the best indie devs in the industry, that Ikaruga takes the torch quite nicely from Radiant Silvergun (You might have heard of that one?) and is one of the best score-attack games of modern times. I did notice in your review you did slate it for being a repetitive high-score style game. Isn't the point of half the achievements on XBL to emulate this play style?

The fact remains that your review is inaccurate as you fail to mention the tactical intricacies of the red/white bullet gameplay and instead slate the game for having no tactics! Your research is blatently wrong. You've obviously not played much of the 2D shooter genre to actually notice it has evolved over the last 20 years but make no mention of your inexperience of the genre in the review, instead *assuming* that 2D shooters haven't moved on (If anything they are the epitome of pure, skill based gaming as most of them are damn hard games that require a hell of a lot more dedication to finish than Halo 3) you slate them off. This *is* lazy journalism: you haven't actually bothered to research your article and have instead just filled in blanks in your own knowledge with your own assumptions.

What you need to do as a journalist is be honest with your magazine and tell them you have no experience of this genre, and that it would be better suited to someone with a more 'hardcore' background to review. Either that or actually bother to research an article before writing it. Im not going to mention the R&B review but do you HONESTLY think its as good as GTA IV,

CoD4 or Burnout Paradise? I have played said game and like every other game based on a kids cartoon before it: it really does blow.

I like him. Except the Red bullet thing, but they could be construed as red. Maybe.

What? Really? You should "get" everything about Ikaruga after the first set of waves.

I didn't, I just got bored.

That review especially mentions that newcomers to the genre wouldn't find it inviting - it wasn't for me so they were right.

soulcalibur up on partnernet - had a verry quick go and its doesn’t look like a direct port of the dreamcast game (if that what you expected) only reason I say that is that I went right into vs mode and all chars and stages where unlocked as default.

Its a bit of a shame that this happens with some of these downloadable games - for example Speedball 2 doesnt have the origanal title screen

Does it have Mission Mode and the Unlockable Art Gallery?

No mission mode

All of the art galleries, extras, chars and stages are already unlocked

no create an intro thing (doesnt have an intro of any kind)

Played it a bit, loading is fast as expected and then DC d-pad is offically better than the xbox 360 one

Is all the unlocked stuff not just a Partnernet thing?

IF, thats what it's actually like, then the DC version still looks like the best one. Shame.

Much as I love Ikaruga, no way is it friendly in the sense of understanding how the game works stright away. Took a while before I understood the 3x multiplyer and how to play it in general. Every friend I've recommended it to over the years treats it as a normal shooter at first, it doesn't "click" as quickly as you say.

Which might be one of the failings of that reviewer. Too little time spent, too little care to do so.

On the topic of Ikaruga and I'm sure it's been mentioned before...man do I miss the sub-chapter mode from the GC version that allowed you to "perfect" particuler parts of a level.

Aces of the Galaxy is much better than I was expecting. Lovely graphics and I liked the emphasis on score attack but it's a shame that the story is so insubstantial. I'm still really tempted to get it though. Does co-op work well?

I was looking forward to going through edge master mode again, i was gonna get it for a good reason to play through it again and the convenience - ah well. Unless something dramatically changes i think ill pass this release. I Still have my DC set up with VGA and while SC in HD looks nice with the anti aliasing n all it`s not significantly better looking than the DC in VGA.

also again: darn.. why wasnt the speedball 2 titlescreen included!!!

Edit: oh i know its been said elsewhere but ill just confirm that there is no new 16:9/16:10 options its kept in its origanal 4:3 aspect ratio

Yeah, I think my incandescent rage probably stopped me thinking straight for a few minutes there. I still think it's pretty simple though.

I quite enjoyed the trial of Aces of the Galaxy - discriminating targets from the background is a little bit tricky, but it has a decidedly lo-fi feel to its presentation that I liked. Is the maximum missile lock-on four targets? Seems a bit stingy...

It's very good, yes. It's also superb on the GH guitar.

Oooo.... does anyone know if you can use the Rock Band drums with it (or the Rock Band guitar)???* :0

* I'm actually going to presume that you can seeing as as far as I am aware the drums or guitar frets are just mapped to the face buttons.

EDIT: I see that Bushtopher has had exactly the same thought as me
