Geometry Wars Evolved

This has become a lunchtime fave at work; I'm trying to buy a 360 just so I can play it at home.

Out of interest, has anyone ever tried Spheres of Chaos? I hadn't heard of it but it was written by the guy who sits next to me at work and it's received some very positive comments. Worth a look if you're hankering after more GW.

I need to find a way of squeezing this (14Mb), Mutant Storm (30Mb) and everything else (PGR3, PD0 saves and Live profile etc) on a standard memory card.

Doing my head in not having the full version but I'm cerainly not deleting MS.

I don't know how big the memory card is, but you can redownload anything you've bought, so you could juggle GW and MS on your card if necessary. Presumably buying the full game also unlocks it in PGR3; perhaps you can get away with not having the downloaded game on your card in that case... so, delete MS, download and buy GW, delete GW, redownload MS and see if that does the trick, perhaps?

That would have been very cool. Alas, it's not the case.

Well, that's just the most inconvenient thing since unsliced bread. I would have put that down as a no-brainer - just like, I don't know, a game making use of a 20g hard drive if one was available, to speed up long loading times or something like that.

I'm just full of unreasonable expectations today.

:(

Soo true.

Think I'll try and slim down my PGR3 save - it's ballooned to about 6Mb now with a bunch of replays and photos.

Yes. He did the original Acorn version?

The little little blue bastards can be killed/avoided, just make sure you're firing in the same direction you're moving, and that you're not moving too quickly.

The multiplier values I've noticed are something like:

1500 points == 2x multiplier

3000 points == 3x multiplier

12000 points == 4x multiplier

65000 points == 5x multiplier

(I've no idea when the 6x multiplier kicks in, because I'm normally thinking about other things by then (I'm assuming before 200k!)).

When you die in the later stages, you're almost at a 4x multiplier before you know it - just because of the sheer number of enemies on screen...

6x multiplier at 128000ish.

Firepower is increased at each 10k points. Mostly just gets faster I think, but flips between the distort the grid one, and the multi way thing.

Ooh. Multipliers are based on # of enemies killed. So letting them all get sucked into black holes early in the game possibly isn't a good idea.

I used to love Spheres of Chaos. Haven't played it for a while as I gave my Risc PC away due to lack of space a couple of years ago.

...goes to look at Spheres of Chaos webpage...

Oh nuts, everything except a Mac version. :huh:

Aha! There's a tactical element after all. Don't they all get spat back out en masse if you fail to destroy the hole, though?

That's the only downside to the game for me - it's almost completely on rails (multipliers at set points, weapon upgrades at set points) and the only skill it rewards is staying alive. It rewards it damned well, though, and beyond the two minute mark I can't see how any other skill could get a look-in - you certainly wouldn't have time to think about changing weapons or chaining combos. Something like a slowdown command would be good, though - slip into bullet time for a couple of seconds to effect a dodge, and you'd have a chance to gawp at the visuals without the consuming sense of panic...

I read over at the bizzare forums that the points you get for a black hole are based on how many enemies have been sucked in (or at least I THINK that's what I read), but that you only get it if you destroy it before it explodes...

Yeah I think that's right. I don't know if you get more points for destroying the homing stuff it spews out though.

I find setting off a couple of black holes and letting them suck in a load of bad guys to be a good tactic later on, as they free up some valuable screen space. It's worth it even if you let them explode, because after the 200k mark, the contents of bursting black holes is one of the lesser worries.

My top score it just under 300k.

The 60 second challenge is a piece of cake, took me about five goes or so, most of them being about 50~55 seconds before managing it. It's just a matter of dragging and herding the homing things around behind you in a rough circle and plotting the most sensible course to give yourself room around the more static/non-homing enemies.

You should check this out if you're after some training! :)

Broken the 300 000 barrier, but the things that annoy me that haven't cropped up in a while have returned - such as having two red things on the screen at once (never happened before out of memory), running away from a horde of things and something spawning beneath me (so no chance of getting out of it's way) - killing me instantly. :)

Good though!

I struggle to get to 200k most of the time, but the game just clicked for me a second ago and I hit 688,000. The guys on the Bizarre forums reckon the best tactic is to circle around the outside, firing in the direction you're travelling in (but far enough from the wall so that the snakes don't catch you when they spawn).

Console yourself with the knowledge that you have at least some semblence of a life.

Says the man at no. 4 in the Bankshot Billiards world rankings :o

Just messin'. Those top two guys have received some cool stuff I believe for having such high scores, so not a totally worthless pursuit.
