Two new Checkpoints since I last posted. Last week was Shailesh Prabhu, who started one of the very first Indie Game studios in India, and has a super heartbreaking story about game dev. This week is Marc Flury. He was the lead programmer on Beatles Rock Band before going off to form Drool with one of the guys from the band Lighting Bolt. He lives in Seoul now so my show is pretty much international.  Drool are making Thumper which looks extraordinary.

Just listening to Computer Game Show and I have to ask - why is podcast software so unreliable? I've never made one but it seems all too common that whatever software is being used, whether it's audacity or some expensive bit of kit that Giant Bomb use, every now and then it will decide to just devour a podcast in some way, shape or form.

It doesn't seem like it should be that difficult to get right.

A lot of podcasts where everyone is in different places use a combination of Skype and Audacity, recording separate files on every person's computer and then combining them. that is a glitchy combination at the best of times and of course if you have 5 peoole you have 5 times as much chance of something going wrong. Into the bargain, Windows 10 fucks up microphone volume on Skype I believe. Several podcasters I follow on twitter were discussing new ways to do this the other day, so bad is this problem for them.

As for Giant Bomb, I believe they were using a mish-mash of surprisingly old tech in a shared CBSi studio until quite recently. They have their own brand new dedicated podcast studio now (which will enable them to live stream the bombcast) so shouldn't have problems in the future, hopefully.

You should do one at the next Glesgames.

I am totally doing this btw. I'll be there next Saturday. No idea what it's going to be like but I guess I'll see what footage I get.

Not well at the moment and off work so really enjoying motoring through Checkpoints (particularly Simon Parkin, Keith Stuart) and The Computer Game Show.  In terms of gaming podcasts, all I ever listened to was One Life Left so it's nice to have a change.

Glad you're enjoying it man, thanks for listening. This week's guest on my show wrote code for satellites, made a game every week for a year* and created a game jam on a train and called it the Train Jam because of course! Checkpoints #38 with Adriel Wallick - declandineen.com/checkpoints

*this is my favourite game from that year. It is painful and true if you've ever tried to make something - http://msminotaur.com/gameaweek/week9.html

Without wishing to turn this into the 'let's see how far we can get our tongues up Declan's bumhole' thread, I have to add that Checkpoints really is wonderful. I'm not up to speed with it as I don't get that much podcast time any more but both the Keith Stuart and Steven Bailey ones I've listened to recently have been so good. You really let people open up with your interview style and it's always a pleasure to listen to people's stories.

As I'm sure others do, I find myself mapping out my own gaming history in my head as I listen and as an old fucker with kids who love games (because of me) and a Dad who got me into gaming with a Vic20, listening to Keith talk about his gaming relationships with his kids and his own Dad was really great and had me choked up a couple of times.

Looking forward to John Davison, he's always good value.

I haven't tried checkpoints yet but will be listening to that. Added it to my podcast feed and the Jeff Green ep will be getting listened to as well.

One of the things I like about The Computer Game Show is how it's not snarky all the time and generally everyone gives games a chance. I was thinking I should be more like that and was watching the Agents of Mayhem reveal and wasn't that impressed at all but was like "no, no give it a chance it might be alright," only to turn on the podcast and them to say it looks crap.

Yep, new episode took around 3 hours to download this morning. Other podcasts refreshed at the same time downloaded in seconds.

I use Downcast if that makes any difference. Presumably it's hosted in the same place for everyone? I have no idea what I'm talking about.

They've apologised for the slow speeds on Twitter, and it's apparently being looked into. It'll be down to a host issue.

It's great so far though. Dave sounded genuinely angry with Matt when he accused him of cheating! He's a scary guy.

Hnngggh, don't stop. All you need to do now is copy and paste that right into iTunes, add five stars and hit submit.

Seriously though, that is well nice, thanks so much. There's such a glut of content everywhere it's super cool that anyone even listens, let alone gets such a kick out of it. Those are some of my favourite eps too, the one with Steven especially because I grew up in a similar area.

I'd be really interested to find out the demographics that listen to the show. I'm 34 and I'm assuming the listeners will skew around the same kind of age. Hopefully some of the kids are into it too.

You're welcome and I'll whack a review on iTunes when I can.

I'm 43, been gaming since Pong but it was the Vic20 with Gorf that changed everything in 1982.

Also, when are you getting Jaz Rignall on? Think he'd be a great guest, the mega drive was totally the golden era for me.

Yeah sorry about the download speeds. SPOnG are looking into it, they're even taking it up with the people that own the servers. We can't work out what's cause the slow downloads but they've assured me that they'll get it fixed.

Glad to see you in here @elmo. While you're about I'd just like to say thanks for getting involved in podcasting on a regular basis again. I've been listening to your stuff since the start of Joypod and your shows have always blown any other podcast I've listened to put of the water, regardless of genre.

@Fury4k Thanks man, that's really nice of you to say. I'm really happy to be back podcasting too, absolutely love doing it!

@wretcherd Yep. I found out that neither Perfect Dark or Knack 2 was announced as I was going back through the presentations. Believe me, the first half an hour of next week's show is already sorted.

No worries, it was well worth the wait. The bit where the other chaps were trying to explain the weird Kojima man-baby interface had me fucking pissing myself!

Just listening to the Computer Game Show E3 podcast, and it's a brilliant idea. Feeding someone E3 blow by blow. Just got to the bit where they talk about the Dead Stranding reveal, and it's hilarious. I showed my boys this reveal, and while they thought it was batshit mental, hearing someone describe it to @elmo makes it sound even more ridiculous. Summed up by the comment "Fucking Hell, Kojima"

Carry on keeping me informed and making me laugh lads, brilliant stuff.

That ep is up now btw, as is the latest regular episode with my guest Chris Suellentrop who was a political writer for the New York Times and Slate for years, but has focussed more and more on videogame work for the past few years. He's written for everyone and is very smart and entertaining. Good episode!
