Patrick and Jeff are a particularly bad combination I find, Patrick has to have an opinion on everything while only knowing a small amount about each thing*, which meshes unpleasantly with the over the top negativity Jeff sometimes gets into. Even about games he's previously given good reviews to! I tend to avoid the bombcast when there's a big new release for that reason.

*He's a dilletante!

I want a Vinny-only podcast.

Episode 0 of the Idle Book Club podcast has quietly seeped out if anyone else here likes to read things, just downloading it now. The odd time Chris has mentioned books he's liked they've been to my taste and I know Sean has recently discovered David Foster Wallace so I have some hope for this being entertaining.

Ok, I take back my even-handed opinion of Patrick on the Bombcast.

This week is white noise compared to much of the past couple of months. :(

Especially with him sucking Jeff's MMO-hate boner.

Listening to Jeff recount his terse tale of how he played the first two minutes of Guild Wars 2 and didn't like it, only a couple of weeks after we had to listen to him waffle about playing the Japanese language version of the latest Phantasy Star using a VPN for about an hour made me want to punch everything in existence.

Whiskey/ex whiskey podcast supergroup time:

Ryan Davis when he's chilled out

Brad

Vinnie

Will Smith but he's not allowed to talk about Half Life 2: Episode Two

Dave

Drew

The latest Weekend Confirmed is OK, Garnett seems to have smoked a bit less crack than usual and there's some new English guy who seemed to be a good addition.

I unsubscribed at long last, which is slightly sad as I have had a Garnett Lee podcast in my sub box since the 1up Yours days with Shane, John & Luke which is probably more than five years ago now. I had been listening to the show less and less often of late, but a couple of weeks back when they were droning on about failed MMO business models again somebody (Cannata I think) said something along the lines of "Whenever I am on a long car ride I like to start a discussion about how MMO developers could break the 'holy trinity' mechanic of tank, healer and dps..." and I just had to turn it off. I might be a massive geek, but I dont need to listen to endless idle speculation about videogames with very little insight or substance. Weekend Confirmed has been far too much of that for months.

Oh, and I think I have decided the current Thumbs lineup of Chris, Sean and Jake is my favourite.

Yeah i really enjoyed the live show and I've also now unsubscribed from Weekend confirmed. There still feels like a hole in my Gaming Podcast listening though. I'm down to;

Chet and Jon, Idle Thumbs, Newb Review and Midnight Resistance.

I listen to the occasional Mature Gamer and any Cane and Rinse that's about a game i like but there still feels like something is missing.

Have you never tried the Cagcast? None of them are in the games industry (though CheapyD's income does come through his website) and they seem to spend more time talking about how Cheapy's wife wont fuck him than they do about games some weeks. It is a little too pro Xbox and Apple for my liking, but I think it's a good show. They havent put an episode out in about three weeks, but its usually a weekly show.

What I don't understand with Weekend Confirmed is how they're still floundering to find a winning format. With Garnett it's all about coming up with a decent cast. Yes, he's a shambolic host, who makes up words, but he has a sort of historic familiarity to him. A grounding. A reminder of the old days of podcasting. It's sort of like putting up with Terry Wogan as he becomes ever more scatty and out of touch - you remember the classic Eurovision commentaries when he was in his prime. He just needs a decent supporting cast. Jeff, I think, is pretty good. He plays and completes a lot of games and normally has something reasonably interesting to say about them. He also has a life outside videogames, so brings a bit of something extra to the show (if he's in it, clearly he's getting busier and busier). It's after that they struggle. Jeff 2 is dull. Spicer is awful. The female guests are OK, but I'm a chauvinist and I still think the classic videogame podcast should be bloke only (if there's a woman in the room the dynamic will always change, either towards more politeness or letching in Garnett's case) and the loud New Yoiker sort of had promise after I first heard him, but was dreadful on a recent episode.

They need a Shane. Someone to call out Garnett when he's speaking bullshit and they need someone with a bit of zing to them. Luke-esque, to add the "OH NO HE DIDN'T" aspect to it. I thought the lispy guy from Shacknews had promise, but it still didn't quite work. I think bringing in someone from the UK or Australia with a bit of a cutting, more sarcastic edge would work well (John Davidson was good before he went slightly family-gaming bonkers). It's all about the mix in podcasts for me, which is why I don't like Idle Thumbs much. They're all too bright and eloquent on Idle Thumbs. I prefer the Michael Thomas Learning French style of audio, where you're drawn into the conversation because you're desperate to join in because someone is speaking shit, before you get the relief that someone else on the panel has stepped in on your behalf. It's another reason Joypod is good. Someone can be saying something deadpan and serious and Elmo will shout at them for being tedious/weird at exactly the moment you want to shout it too.

I'm still going to stick with WC - but I have to admit with over a hundred episodes down it's looking increasingly likely that they aren't going to recapture the magic of the 1Up era.
