Just jumped on board the Mature Gamer Podcast boat. Why did i take so long? Loving it so far, is it worth me starting from episode 1?

I would say so. If you've only just started listening you'll have missed out on the legend that is Aidy. The last couple of eps just haven't been as good without his dulcet Manc tones, and some of his rants are hilarious.

Anybody got any suggestions for PC-centric podcasts that aren't dry as a bone? I've got the standard issue PC Gamer US in my feed, but it's not exactly laugh-a-minute.

Have you tried the PC Gamer UK edition? It's far superior to the US version.

I've just sync'd the new joypod to my phone, so I can listen (to the rest) on the train.

there's still an hour to go, and the GF'll be with me, but we're not getting married anytime soon, so it should be ok...

This weeks Bombcast is probably the best ever, and game discussion doesn't enter into it.

I've been reading about Ham Radio exams and Number Stations for hours now.

Yeah, I left UVB-76 running in the background for an hour or so earlier.

Aer these just available to those that funded the Kickstarter?

Nope. I think they realised it was more convenient for everyone if they just put them on the podcast feed. They should be starting proper numbered episodes next week, anyway.

Here's the tour of their Minecraft server, by the way. Their users have made some really impressive stuff.

I'm not sure if this has been asked before: is there a decent retro podcast out there for UK computers, i.e. covering 8-bit Spectrum / C64 or 16-bit Amiga / ST / DOS, etc.? As much as I like Retronauts it's a little too US-centric and RPG-focused to really take me back to the past.

Yeah that intro made me laugh too. Gotta give props to the intro music as well, it really gets stuck in my head.

Although I like the format of the show I think it might benefit from being bi-weekly all the time as there's usually quite a bit of repetition from one week to the next. Having said that I churn through gaming podcasts very fast so it's nice to have a weekly one!

It's testament to Chet and Jon's passion for games that they write about them for a living but still like to discuss them in their spare time! You can tell they are reviewers too as I think they're really good at describing how they feel about the games without woffling and they put vocab to good use.

Not really gaming related, but does anyone who listens to Tested find it really annoying that they're cramming all these mythbusters things into the feed? :(

I like Tested and Mythbusters, and the two together is awesome, but I don't really want to listen to 30 minutes on vacuum forming.

They're still trying to find the balance. Some of it I find fairly interesting - the little bits and bobs with Adam have been more interesting (and supportable - when the site relaunched I was perfectly prepared to call it thoroughly dead) but they also have wittered on about things too much at times. I kinda get, for example, that 'making' is Cool. Lets leave it, for now.

They threatened, for a bit, to become a 'that's interesting popular science stuff+consumer tech' podcast but then you get things like, for example, the Higgs possible discovery and their talk on the podcast amounted to 'Well, thats interesting... we're not qualified to talk about it... sooooo APPLE!'. But then the cut to Apple talk thing has plagued the site since day one so to be expected. I think they'll get the balance eventually. I still I enjoy it more than I enjoy the Bombcast these days (though it dips badly when Gary is away).

Speaking of which actually I have to agree that last weeks Bombcast was one of the best they've done recently, the last time I felt that was the episode with Dave on from... February time I think. It's no coincidence that both episodes lack Patrick Klepek. It's even more notable that this weeks was a fun listen when you consider they didn't have any new games to talk about really.

Patrick's presence on GiantBomb correlates directly to my use and enjoyment of the site going through the floor. He's on every QL it seems. He's annoying. He's lauded as a good writer, and he's not. He's a fairly average writer with a pretentious streak that leans towards seeking 'worthy' stuff to write about in a field that doesn't really require it, and usually failing.

Agreed with everything you wrote there.

I don't mind Klepek as a writer as he writes about stuff that doesn't really interest me, so I ignore it. He's not naturally charismatic, entertaining or interesting whatsoever though, and interrupts people too much with his half-formed high-school level 'isn't that interesting and deep' thoughts. Both of which are problems for an 'on-air' personality on an audio-video focused entertainment site. I recall them having someone on for an interview (Nolan North?) and Patrick interrupted the interviewee constantly with utter pish... until the interviewee started to get seriously annoyed and took the piss out of him for it.

edit: in fact, this would be the interview: http://www.giantbomb...ge=4&sort=first

Their premium subscriber stuff has been excellent recently.

Is it just the "cool thing" to hate on Patrick? I really don't get all the hate for him, I've never found him to be even slightly insufferable. He just knows what he likes, it doesn't mean I have to agree with him, but his opinion is welcomed and valid.

He's no "Adam Fitch", or "Karen Chu". Those two managed to destroy the Geekbox between them. One for the constant inane waffle about nothing, and the other for being Karen Chu,

I find him incredibly irritating. Sometimes you just encounter a person who you just don't like. Might be a nice guy, but just not your type of nice guy. Patrick is exactly that person for me.

On the podcast, he has to have an opinion on everything, even when his opinion is 5 minutes of pseudo-intellectual babble that amounts to 'I agree with Jeff'. He's not blessed with a great voice unfortunately, his accent and manner and persona on the site gnaws away at me when I listen. He's not funny either. The other guys swing and miss a lot but I think all of them at some point made me chuckle at least. I think I might throw something at whatever I'm listening to the next time he goes '(huge spoiler for whatever), oh spoilers by the way'. I actively skip over parts of the podcast now where I can hear a patented Klepek 10 minute story that achieves nothing, probably mentioning by name his fiance 4 times (seemingly as a reminder to the world that somehow, something found him likable enough to consider marrying), and also just slyly dropping in that he's from Chicago, because we aren't allowed to forget he's from Chicago.

It used to be bad enough that he was on the podcast every week, telling us about whatever indie developed title was flavour of the month this week and somehow deserved to be put on the Klepek Pedestal. But then they started using him in what appeared to be every QL on the site for a period. And it just doesn't work because he's not got the personality to carry it or play off the other guys. Ryan and Patrick QLs may as well be accompanied by silence. It'll be as entertaining. He'll witter on for 5 minutes telling us about the history of the project to prove, as a journalist, he did his research. He will at no point be particularly funny. But his voice will grate away and he will not shut the fuck up.

And the lauded writing... Christ. He got hired to be some credible writer for the site, bringing genuine journalism to the site. But he writes in a truly curious way, he mentions himself far too much, and then crosses that with the overly formal tones of someone who thinks journalists should write in that manner. It's at complete odds to the rest of the site's tone and it sounds forced - you can damn near hear the smile on his face when he submits another well written piece. And then what he ends up writing about is inevitably something I, and I would wager a considerable amount of people reading the site, don't give a hoot about. 'I asked Sony why it hasn't signed Johann Sebastian Joust'? I don't care. I certainly don't care that Patrick Klepek asked. And then the rest of his written output is exactly what he was hired not to do - simplying relaying happenings in the gaming world, usually stuff straight off a press release, and calling it news. I don't particularly like Alex Navarro's writing style (the definition of the old joke about games journalism, press releases with sarcasm) but at least he doesn't pretend to be doing anything other than that and at least has his own, naturally developed and believable, voice.

It's obviously sad that his dad died and I feel for the guy over that, but his absence has improved the site a bit - even when nothings coming out. This weeks podcast is another enjoyable one, again, no Klepek and they can't really talk about anything new again. The 40 minutes at the beginning wittering on about nothing really I really enjoyed hearing, 4 guys all of whom have personalities that spark off each other, all a certain charm, and all easy to listen to. I dread to think what it would have been with the grating Chicago whine over the top.

Apologies for the rant. I just really dislike the guy. I used to love Giantbomb. Now I drop in praying that if theres a QL I'm interested in, it's lacking Klepek. I mostly listen to the Bombcast these days out of habit.

Yeah, its the usual uproar when the presenters slightly change, the Mature Gamer podcast is still good, worth checking out the PC based offshoot too.

Also the last two Joypods had me laughing out loud round the pool on honeymoon, so good!

Cheers mate. Was good to have My Old Man back on the show. Loved his idea for the Wii U.
