*cough*...and when can we expect the next joypod?

With midlifegamer going bi-weekly and Cain&Rinse being a tad dull I'm desperate for some Elmo, Egg and Extra in my ears.

Hoping to record Tuesday evening. Sorry for the lack of casts, was always going to happen this year. Egg hasn't helped with his business starting and all that but it's mostly my fault now that I'm trying to tie my girlfriend down to a contract.

edit: I really miss doing the show regularly but i look forwards to recording a hell of a lot more than i used to these days.

Idle Thumbs seems to now be 'the Idle Thumbs Network', which has expanded to include the Three Moves Ahead podcast. I listen to it sometimes. It's a bit dry, but one of the most interesting game podcasts around. You really have to be interested in strategy games, of course, but if you do those guys really know their stuff. A really good fit for Idle Thumbs.

is this out now then?

Afraid not and wont be till tomorrow. We finished recording at around 10:30pm (we usually finish at 9pm but I was playing football last night) then i had to go and pick jo up from somewhere so was only half way through editing at 1pm and had to go to bed.

I hate leaving it till the next day as i spend the whole day freaking out about there being a show on my hard drive just sitting there but i really had no choice. Going to finish editing tonight and hopefully it'll be online tomorrow morning.

I work alone and have listened to podcasts all day, every shift, for the past 7 years or so. I have tried pretty much all the big gaming ones, as well as a lot of the wee ones.

In my experience the big US ones tend to be up their own arses, with the shows more about the hosts than the games.

With redundancy looming there's only 1 left I will listen to in my own free time - CAGcast . Continually makes me laugh and giggle, and the 3 hosts all have interesting voices that vary in tone - my pet peeve with podcasts is boring hosts with flat voices. Just because you CAN do a gaming podcast, doesn't mean you SHOULD.

I will also continue listening to Wittertainment which is the most informative and funny podcast out there - but for films.

Phew, just remembered to chip in for Idle Thumbs! Also looks like they're doing a celebratory stream to mark the end of the Kickstarter campaign at 6pm Pacific Time (which is, I think, 1am here). It'll be happening at this link anyway, whenever it starts!

So they talked some funny stuff, discussed the Mass Effect 3 ending at length despite none of them having played it or knowing what happens, Chris played the theme music and The Wizard, and then they played a bunch of Pikmin 2 multiplayer. Now they're just playing Pikmin 2 while talking in the background. That all sounds like it could have been awful, but it was amazing! Oh, and there exists, somewhere in Jake Rodkin's mother's house, a Jake Rodkin body pillow.

Oh, and the first book for their new book cast is The Sense of an Ending by Julian Barnes!

Sorry to hear about the redundancy. :(

I do like the CAGcast too. I quite like the fact that CheapyD is a cynical asshole who doesnt really care that much about the rest of the games media, he has a sense of humour which really matches mine. Inane bit of trivia too, I was born on exactly the same day as Shipwreck. (I only know this because they referenced his 30th birthday party and it was the same day as mine, so I asked him when he was born on Twitter)

I'm a big fan of the Idle Thumbs Podcast, but I really wasn't impressed with the live stream / live video that they did. Technically it was great - they had a good video setup in Chris's living room with the crew sat on sofas. They had some good video processing so that when they started playing multiplayer Pikmin 2, the stream showed split screen of the room and the onscreen video. It'd obviously taken a LOT of effort and planning to get it all working.

However, they obviously weren't that comfortable in front of the video camera, and the idea to play half an hour or so of Pikmin 2 without any structured commentary or explanation for people who'd never played it, was a bit of a flop. As the stream started, and for the first 10-15 minutes, there were nearly 1000 people watching the stream. As they started playing Pikmin 2, this dropped over the period of about 5-10 minutes to around 400. I also turned off after about 20 minutes of Pikmin, as I just had better things to do and to be honest it was pretty boring and drawn out. A lot of the chat in the stream's chat window was saying the same thing.

As for the signature Idle Thumbs insightful, funny, and entertaining banter.... I dunno, as I said, I thought they seemed quite uncomfortable in front of the camera, so that certainly had something to do with it. There was that one section on "discussing the ME3 ending although none of us has played it" which was quite funny, but that's about it.

I hope the Idle Thumbs team don't feel as though they're being pushed towards doing things they don't really want to do, such as doing live stream video podcasts. The recent news about Idle Thumbs now including Three Moves Ahead and now producing a Book Club podcast are interesting given that their main audience and Kickstarted funding has come from people who loved the video games audio podcast from the original team.

We'll see how it goes, but I'm not too confident that we're going to see a continuation of the "pure gold" Idle Thumbs podcast as it was.

I don't see any reason why the podcast won't be as good as it has been in the past. The video thing is understandable since they've never really done anything like that together before. Did they even say if video was going to be a regular thing, or was that just a kickstarter special?

It was just a one off thing. I thought it was fine and can't see how anything they've announced they plan to do will affect their ability to cast high quality pods into my face but it wouldn't be a rllmuk thread without some premature pessimism.

New Joypod is up: http://bit.ly/GGFhEz

Really enjoyed the Mass Effect chat on this. Great to hear people just talking about how much they loved it and what a great experience it was rather than pissing and whining about everything it didn't get quite right. I think that is broadly why Joypod is still my favourite. All seems to be so uncynical and there is that sense of childlike joy about games that is missing from so many podcasts. I’m sure that will absolutely crack you up, up but it’s a compliment, honestly.

So many podcasts just seem to be so tired of games and bored of pretending to like them or something, I dunno, it's weird. I stopped listening to OLL for that reason and I'm just listening to the Giantbomb now and it’s just an endless tirade of sarcasm and witty asides as they all come over as having some superiority complex over the makers of the games particularly. Of course you need criticism in journalism and there is a lot to be pissed off about in modern gaming but it seems all the joy and fun has to be sucked out as a result.

Maybe it’s just me...

Anyway, MOAR PLEASE! and looking forward to the ME3 spoilercast :)

Thanks guys. Seriously, i can't express how much these comments mean to me. I'm really happy with the show at the moment, we all seem to really look forward to the next recording and we have a great laugh putting the show together.

The Mass Effect cast should be up tomorrow at around 11am, then i hope to do a 'real' joypod next week because i'm looking forward to talking to Sean about Journey and Michael SSX.

Then after that we're going to do a Skype-In show, a bit like the old play radio days. It's mean a lot of people called in so keep an eye out.

I'm a big fan of the Idle Thumbs Podcast, but I really wasn't impressed with the live stream / live video that they did.

I don't think it was meant to be a proper show, dude. It was just a livestream of them goofing around and talking. Geez.

such as doing live stream video podcasts.

It wasn't a live stream video podcast. It was just a livestream, a countdown, a celebration of what they'd achieved.

Anyway: Citizen Killzone, FUCK ME.

Such a good decision to listen to all the Thumbs again.

Mini-boosts.
