Gaming Podcasts

With 2 hours of commuting every day, I've been listening to many many podcasts, but no gaming ones.

I think I've avoided them because any spoken word discussion of gaming I've come across is almost always massively painful. Are there any that feature:

1) No people who aren't funny trying to be funny

2) No crowbarred in girls to make it 'cool'

3) No people who for some reason think we need to hear about their boring lives

4) Genuinely deep knowledge of games without being overly geeky

5) More of a focus on things that are already out instead of things that are months away (I'm guessing this last one is a bit much to ask, so maybe let it go)

6) Preferably British but if American more Uhh Yeah Dude laid back than overly enthusiastic everyone listen to me I'm talking now.

Too much to ask?

Mmm, seems I should make a podcast... there's a gap in the market.

The one the other night with Jonathan Blow taking on two generic Xbox tech guys who were very defensive about Kinect was interesting at some points and incredibly dull at others. Last night's with David Jaffe, two guys from Double Fine and a couple of other developers was fantastic though. Very different from GBs usual output - hardly any talk of e3, lots of philosophical game design theory stuff which, as someone who has no real idea about how games are made, was fascinating.

I had a quick listen to the Swedish episode of Gamespy Debriefings and it was pretty base, chilidish ramblings. The two biggest dickheads still just desperate to shout the first hilarious things that come into their heads, I didn't find Anthony's comments particularly shocking though - I think he just had a bad experience and needed to vent (he vented in totally the wrong environment). I did only get half way through before switching off, so maybe it worsened after that.

I also tried to listen to Gamerdork. I lasted three minutes thanks to that woman giggling at everything. This show had better improve soon.

No Joypod for weeks either.

Is there a good podcast from this week recapping the E3 going on that doesn't involved a load of fat, American virgins being all 'industry' but is still quite funny?

I'm almost certain that even if you could find something like this, you'd still get them spending ages talking about which obscure beer they're drinking at the moment, like a bunch of dickheads.

Have you tried One Life Left before? It's a bit of an acquired taste, but might be what you are looking for. Avoid the first two seasons, hits its straps from Season 3 onwards, achieving a consistent score of 7/10 from then onwards.

The thing is they don't really discuss games much; just a bit of news and the briefest of brief reviews. Not that that's a bad thing of course! Love you OLL.

7/10

It's tough recommending anything though as Timmo's criteria is pretty subjective in parts. What's constitutes funny? How geeky is too geeky? I might recommend the Giant Bombcast as they know their stuff and spend a lot of time talking about the here and now, but then he may think they're too American, too boring and overly enthusiastic. :P

The podcasts I jump to when there's a new one available are (in no particular order):

GamerDork: Xib and Ratso have good chemistry, and Ratso has certainly got a good brain in his noggin so can analyse and articulate game experiences/recommendations well. A reasonable balance between real life and gaming chat. Some good guests, some bad guests. A good baseline podcast without pretending to be industry experts/analysts.

JoyPod: Elmo obviously has tourettes, which makes me giggle. Michael is the voice of reason and a bit of a punchbag. The chemistry is good though. The real life chat is genuinely funny, and the gaming chat is informal but informative and when Elmo gets going he talks about things in a similar way to Ratso on GamerDork. They have some good regular guests and a "third chair" of Sean (Shaun?) who's good, knowledgable, and doesn't talk like a spoon.

Gamers with Jobs: Been going for ages and these guys are really professional and organised. Sometimes to the extent that it can seem a bit clinical. This podcast is like making sure you've got a loaf of bread in the freezer. It's just something that's unexciting but is a really solid podcast with up to date news (without going in to industry analysis or speculation) and a really nice range of gaming discussion. Sometimes they're playing new stuff. Sometimes they're playing old stuff. Sometimes they talk about board games, pinball machine restoration, where to go to find good arcades etc. It's a "proper, mature, gamer's podcast" in my opinion. Just get your pipe and slippers before you listen.

Brainy Gamer is the only one I listen to now, not very frequent but always interesting. The latest has a discussion on LA Noire which made me think of the game in a different light, more so than anything else I've read about it. I'd say it meets most of Timmos criteria, the guests don't try to be comedians or go off onto discussions on chocolate but is by no means stuffy.

I completely agree. Anthony was just relaying a bad experience but the HERDY GERDY SCHMERDY PURDY! being screamed out (literally) every 60 seconds was grating, and fucking offensive. I wonder if anybody has complained and if they have how seriously the complaints have been taken. For the sake of argument if Anthony had gone to Africa and the noises in the background had the noises had been ooga booga noises then they would have probably been sacked. I doubt very much whether they would have done it because there is a stigma about doing that, but is it really any different to what they did to Swedish people? Xenophobia is just as bad as racism in my opinion.

Scott Bromley and Brian Altano are just a horrible presence on podcasts. I think I find Brian Altano more offensive because he is just a cock, there have been times where Scott Bromley has been a guest on Rebel FM has shown he can at least string a sentence together. Brian Altano just seems like his pathetic sidekick who desperately needs to be part of a double act because he has nothing original or interesting of his own to say.

PC Gamer US podcast. Some of those fellas have been into PC games for 15+ years, it's informative, there's light humour, virtually no chat about crisps or parking, they don't mind talking about old games that have recently inspired them, and despite it being American it's actually much better than the UK version. Give it a go.

No Joypod for weeks either.

We've got a new show going up today, complete with e3 chat. I was moving home last week so didn't manage to put together a show.

As for Timmo, it's clear to see how seriously he takes his gaming and that's maybe why he can't get into gaming podcasts. When you're that passionate about something you love, listening to others opinions on it just dosnt appeal.

If that was the case I wouldn't be on a gaming forum.

Timmo, you might like weekend confirmed. It's got the best ratio of interesting insider discussion to bullshit of any of the most popular gaming podcasts. Just be prepared to skip through the terrible music mid-podcast every week.

And the extremely boring bits at the beginning where all they do is describe the games they're playing. It only gets interesting after 'what've you been playing.'
