Hang on, why are we complaining about Weekend Confirmed? I'm about at the end of what I think is the latest one, it's excellent as usual. Perhaps it isn't as I don't know what you guys mean by the stand up routine.

The most recent one was recorded at a live event and featured a average-to-bad (IMHO) stand-up routine. I've got no problem with comedy in gaming podcasts - I like The Gamespy Debriefings and that's pretty much all lowbrow comedy - but I thought Christian Spicer's set was pretty lame.

Just noticed that a new Out Of The Game is up...

The first GiantBomb awards show is up - they do best game of last year (that got supported this year), best new character, best original song, best debut and best PC-only game.

I like Jeff Gerstmann but he often seems unwilling to compromise where others will, and the best debut seemed to be an obvious 3 to pick but he just wouldn't let go. And is very wrong about Limbo.

Precisely why I won't listen to the bombcast anymore. Gertsmann's attitude of "I am right and you are wrong" gets on my tits.

I've seen elsewhere people slagging off weekend confirmed for not going into the minutiae that bombcast does when it comes to deciding the awards. But at least on weekend confirmed they are willing to see each others point of view.

Disappointed by the lack of love shown to Minecraft, though not surprised. They didn't get it earlier in the year so no reason to expect them to at this stage. A shame though, as it could have been a contender for Best Debut, Best PC-only Game and Game of the Year, yet only briefly got mentioned in the PC-only discussion before being booed and discarded. Weekend Confirmed were equally dismissive, but didn't come across as though they actually disliked the game like the Giantbomb crew do.

The Best Debut discussion was interesting. I thought Jeff did a good job of arguing in favour of Darksiders, but conversely did a terrible job of arguing against Limbo. Considering that all of the contenders were largely derivative of other titles, I thought Darksiders being pushed aside for essentially being "excellent but derivative" was poorly reasoned, but it's ultimately hard to argue with the final list.

I think the argument that Minecraft came out last year and hasn't left the alpha stage yet (or at least at the time of recording) was good enough for me.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that Red Dead Redemption will end up winning GOTY, or at least it should do but Gerstmann will probably shoot it down.

Weekend confirmed is by far my favourite gaming podcast. I've always liked listening to Garnett (especially when he is a bit pissed :D ) I really like jeff and was glad the Berghammer was back. Agree also with a big boy, it would have been even better if Brian was fit and well (not in regards to SC2, just his general comments)

I do enjoy GB and and Rebel FM to a point but I just find WC more interesting and enjoyable to listen too.

Also, I enjoy the Gamers With Jobs podcast

Their reasoning for not including Minecraft was fine, the booing and comments about it not being good enough anyway were a little unnecessary. Loads of people have discovered, bought and loved the game in 2010 and as it enters beta it's arguably more feature complete than many AAA titles. I think there's a case to be made for Minecraft, as it exists right now, to be considered for a game of the year award regardless of what it becomes in the future or when it was originally released to the public (which was an entirely different game to the one that exists now). But never mind. :D

I agree about Red Dead, I expect Jeff to bully it out of GOTY contention the same way he bullied John Marston out of the Best Character talk simply because he didn't like the game.

I doubt Minecraft will win many GOTY awards from the major gaming sites for the reasons RPS outlined when they gave it their GOTY: It happened without their consent.

There was no press release announcing it, no trailers or media released that they could stick on their site, it appeared without fuss, getting discussion on blogs and forums, it racked up more copies sold and more money made than many big AAA games with teams of dozens of people and budgets of tens of millions of dollars while still in Alpha, and it did it all within their blindspot. They're not going to turn around and champion something they didn't and haven't covered, it would make them look useless.

Ah of course, being an indy title without an advertising budget there's no fat brown envelope in the post for the journalists who support the game. It all makes sense now! :sherlock:;)

That's not what I'm saying at all. To quote RPS

Kieron: As Alec says, it really was a phenomenon. And I’m going to use a really cynical metric to prove this.

Minecraft was absolutely RPS’ game of the year. Not just because we loved it – and we all did – but because how much it contributed to the material existence of the site. In terms of sheer number of page impressions, nothing we covered managed to get as many people reading. And so, via the wonders of advertising, giving us money. Second biggest link of the year was Quinns’ Mine The Gap [Minecraft Lets Play] series. Taken as a whole, it was bigger than everything.

(The first was the revealing of the online-only Ubisoft DRM, for those who are interested.)

And the wonderful thing about this? For a good couple of months, we were the only fuckers covering it. Well, us and the other place. It felt a little the days before the mid-nineties, where you only really got music coverage in the music press, and the NME was selling something like 500K because it was the only place you could find out about the Smiths. How on earth could everyone else be so stupid? How could they be missing covering this enormous, generational, life-affirming THING?

Well, because to paraphrase the immortal words of Huggy Bear, it was happening without their permission. It didn’t come with a press release. It just existed, was inspired, allowed people to prove their own inspiration, and everyone who got it profited from the experience. It broke every single rule, and showed how nonsense those rules were. William Goldman’s line about Hollywood applies as much to games: NO-ONE KNOWS ANYTHING. It burns down civilization and revealed what an untamed landscape gaming really is.

I didn't get Minecraft, I built a hole so the zombies couldn't get me and then I felt no urge to carry on. I'm sure when it's finished I'll be more interested in trying it.

I felt the same way. It's a sandbox/game with heaps of potential.

Basically, Notch (the developer) has built the graphics and gameplay engine for what could be a great game. He released it in Alpha, which is fine, as it is an enjoyable sandbox. However, the early stages of actual gameplay a just about there (in my opinion). The AI is very rudimentary (to non-existent), and there's no advancement outside of building new and cool stuff with the 3D engine and environment manipulation features.

I'm not saying it's bad, as I've spent a number of hours mucking around with it. But at the moment, I just feel that I'm mucking around and not actually playing a game.

Anyway.. to the Minecraft thread, I guess.

Yep, I had the same experience. I can understand why people really love it, but I think RPS are going a bit overboard there with that reasoning. A lot of people, such as the Giantbomb guys... just didn't like it as much as they do, or, since they're 4 or 5 guys trying to review a load of games and produce lots of podcasts and videos every week, they didn't put enough time into it. At the moment it's the the sort of thing that requires a fair amount of time and effort to get into.

My favourite PC game this year is die2nite.

Sounds spot on to me but hey ho.

The second Giantbomb GOTY cast begins with an hour long debate about which piece of DLC was better, Minerva's Den (for Bioshock 2) or Shadow Broker (for Mass Effect 2). In the end, Vinnie pretty much gives up and accepts defeat. I can't say I blame him, I was more than bored of the circular argument they were having by the time it ended. :P

Yeah that dragged on far too long. Looking at Drew's and Alex's top 10 videos on the site, it's clear the entire office loved Limbo so I'm confused how they can let Gerstmann shoot it down so easily. I would've thought in cases of a 3 to 1 fight then the lone supporter would have to concede their fight.

Yeah the situation with Limbo is bizarre. They've said the list they're working on is of the GOTY titles they can agree on and anything they can't agree on should go in their personal lists, but I'm not sure I like that style of doing things. Giving a game an award simply because all four of them agree it's good doesn't hold up as a GOTY if three of them actually think there's a better game available, surely?

As mentioned above I can see the same situation coming up in the full GOTY discussion when Jeff doesn't want to give it to Red Dead.

More debate about Minecraft in this show under the best download-only category, they really don't seem to know what to make of it.

I was happy that it went like that as I found Minerva's Den to be so much better than The Shadow Broker DLC. Hell my favourite Mass Effect 2 DLC was the "Overlord" one. The end of that was awesome! Anyway Jeff Gerstmann is starting to irritate the fuck out of me in these podcasts.

Just has a quick look at that (www.die2nite.com). Hey.... where's this one been? Looks like it could be fun, but the 12-Euro a month subscription seems a bit high.

The susbscription is ridiculously expensive - as much as some full MMOs- but you don't really need any of the features it buys you. The free account is good enough for me.

Limbo's a funny one, I really enjoyed what I played of it but GOTY seems a bit over the top, it does one thing really well for a short time. Alan Wake is flawed, but is just as successful at creating an atmosphere.

The thread of argument over what Minerva's Den 'added-on' was a little annoying to me. I kept wanting to say out loud that MD and LotSB are doing the same thing, however while what you want from a Mass Effect add-on is more party interaction, some nice environments and more Mass Effect lore, what people who love Bioshock want more of is Rapture, and new stories about what happened there. Preferably that story should also be grim as fuck.

Brad Shoemaker seemed to nearly make that point several times, but just never worded it the right way.
