I have zero idea how the FUCK anyone could be able to keep all three watchers alive. My hat off to whoever's been able to do that.

Yeah, I touched on this with Breaksmith but it really was quite the eye-opener to me how much of a struggle people are finding stuff, due to my being so completely spoiled for gear, teammates and that initial, ball breakingly hard bunch of Outland heroics pre 2.1. The only heroics that give me bother personally are the Oculus because I'm a spaz with the attention span of a gnat who forgets what drake does what, and Skadi, because I *never* have bag space for the harpoons. Everything else has been a breeze, bar Sartharion with all his chums and the various instances of lag crippling certain fights, and the only challenge comes from the achievements.

Which says to me that they've got the difficulty nicely balanced right now. Heroics are challenging enough for most while offering ways to spice up the encounters for the better geared and/or those looking for a truely tough challenge. Certainly, Watch Him Die, Hadronox Denied and Gotta Go! are all tricky propositions to be getting on with and can make for some interesting encounters.

There now follows a tiny expression of dissatisfaction with the Affliction rotation. Haunt (lasts 12 seconds, 8 second cooldown) > Curse of Doom/Agony (keeping Agony up is slightly more damage but more mana and gcds as opposed to the fire and forget of a CoD) > Siphon Life > Corruption (refreshed by Haunt) > Immolate > Unstable Affliction > as many Shadow Bolts as your haste allows until about 2.5 seconds before Haunt runs out, as it has a travel time on top of its 1.5 second cast time before doing it all over again, refreshing things where necessary. At 35%, all the shadow spells do more damage, at 25%, you can ditch Shadow Bolts to Drain Soul, which does 4x the damage under 25%. But you still need to keep Haunt and the dots up as i) Drain Soul does more damage for each affliction on the target; ii) Shadow Embrace drops off as it requires Haunt and Shadow Bolt hits to stay on, assuming of course you're the one who has control of it currently it's bugged and only one affliction player can get it (and the benefit) from it, hence opening with Haunt at the start as it's faster than casting Shadow Bolt and you want to beat the other guy to it, even though ideally you'd want both stacks of Shadow Embrace up before you DoT and...

See what I mean? It's a lot of hoop jumping and plate spinning and keeping one eye glued onto DoTimer while the other frantically rolls about in the socket scanning for fires to run out of. It's pretty lame for trash and 5 mans unless it's packs of 3 or more you can just seed spam or if you're pugging with the worst dps in the world, it's a micromanaging nightmare on anything with lots going on or aggro dumps or periods where the tank is out of the picture, you don't get the truly impressive results until under 35%, etc etc etc. Oh and Haunt resists are absolutely crippling due to the cooldown but in fairness, it's not hard to get hitcapped, either via talents or having a Shadowpriest present to help take you to the magic 17% mark.

Or to put it another way, I really miss my big, Arcanite Reaper-wielding nutter. He was a happy medium between the mindless Hitlerbolt spamming of the Sunwell days and the pain in the behind (but admittedly very successful and impressive) that is modern day Affliction.

I know I've been whining about how hollow the expansion feels and all with Naxx being recycled and there not being enough "other stuff" to do in a group capacity...

But in solo terms, WotLK really does entertain me... I know achievements are pointless in OMGPURPLZ terms (for the most part), but I love them to bits. Maybe because I was never really OMGPURPLZ myself. I've been working on the 50 pets thing for what feels like forever now and when I finally get that stinky little skunk I'm going to be so chuffed! I think my Jubling will hatch today or tomorrow, and I've got two pets out of getting revered with Oracles and buying their egg... it apparently hatches into a proto drake too, if you're lucky. I can't remember if the little pets are BoE or not but if they are then it would be cool to sell the ones I have (tickbird and baby cobra!) on the AH.

And don't get me started on making my pets all sparkly with hearts and playing fetch!! :)

And professions are a proper headache now, each single skill up feels like an achievement. Thing is I don't feel like I need any craftables which sort of sucks but also means I don't feel duty bound to level them all up to 450 ASAP... it's nice taking it easy a bit. My death knight has the gathering professions for my druid's crafting, and I need to level the DK to skin/herb enough for her so maybe I'm just being lazy ^^

There now follows a tiny expression of dissatisfaction with the Affliction rotation.

It doesn't sound any harder or easier than cat dps rotation though, which I have found has added some real depth to dpsing.

You need to keep savage roar, rake and rip up. Also mangle, if you're shredding, and to keep up faerie fire (because currently no-one else is). You need to watch your energy so that when tiger's fury is off cooldown and you are low on energy you can use it (use it too soon and you waste the energy it gives). Mangle spamming isn't actually easier if you want to do max dps because you have to watch for OOC procs to do a shred instead (Shreds do over 8k now, which is nice - I really want to switch to a shred rotation but the other tanks aren't reliable enough on gear or attendance so I don't feel like I can spec out of tanking yet. I won't do tons more with a shred build but I will do a bit more). When you're on 5cp and have rip and savage roar up, you need to make a judgement call as to whether wasting all your CP and energy on a bite is actually more dps than simply doing more mangles or shreds, and keepign 100% uptime on rip when it runs out.

If you sync savage roar and rip cooldowns you can find yourself on 5cp with both about to run out, so it's all about juggling the debuffs rather than simply refreshing them.

Not only that but any boss with an air phase you have to do some timing too - it's best to make sure you have a full rip and rake going when it's in the air, but some left over combo points that you can savage roar the moment it lands.

I can't really comment on affliction obviously but it sounds like I'm being glued to debuff bars as much as you seem to be but, it's fun.

The main reason I love Cat dps so much is that it really feels like they have made it so that someone who is masterful at the rotation can excel and compete with the 'pure' dpsers, and beat a 'bad rogue' but a bad rogue will beat a bad cat due to class design. If I do bad dps it is my fault, rather than just being fixed.

That was the thing about cat dps during sunwell. On some Brutallus fights, I played to perfection with powershifting. Simply because there was no point at which I thought I missed things or screwed up and did everything based on experience and also theory, using mana pots on every cooldown and even selfishly innervating myself....and still did sub-par dps compared to the average. I did high dps, but still 800-900 less than the top spot and I still hate the fact that I never ever managed to break 2000dps.

Currently, on the other hand, I really know exactly where I screw up and where I can improve and it also seems to show when I look at what recount says. Tanking in raids has become a bit boring. Nothing really hits that hard, and you can try and do a perfect rotation for max dps, but you barely notice it if you screw it up and no-one else does either, you're usually way ahead on threat and dps seems fairly fixed as long as you aren't afk.

Perhaps but when you're running around in mongcat form, do you also have to micromanage a fragile, prone to terrain bugging pet that is supposed to make up perhaps a quarter of your output as well? Demo is obviously penalised more by such things but the fact remains, every fight that is pet unfriendly (Sartharion, Sapphiron, Doronronadoronron) is just an extra headache on top of an already awkward number of spells to juggle if you go down the over time route (a route that still doesn't scale well with every dps stat, though it is at least better than it was).

Death Knight is much the same. The rotations have no room for error if you want to actually perform well and the reliance on both runes and runic power means you have two seperate thingummies to watch out for and one miss throws everything out of whack. Couple this with Unholy's reliance on a ghoul that equates to (reportedly) almost a quarter of your dps and dies as soon as a mob farts in his general direction means you HAVE to spec into Night of the Dead (using Scourge Strike knocks ten seconds off the summon ghoul's 5 minute cooldown) if you want him to be up for more than the start of the instance.

Luckily next patch brings 70% aoe avoidance to the poor fella (again, only if specced into Night of the Dead) and increased stamina

yeah whats up with those bloody ghouls, he'd dies in seconds on trash but somehow seems to last till the end of some boss fights.

Agreed about the DK rotation as well if plague strike doesnt hit it all goes out the window tho mashing the buttons seems to do decent dps anyway. Still love Death Knight to bits

So far i've hit 75 and i've kinda ground to a halt. I've not got the same enthusiasm for WOTLK as I did with vanilla/TBC. Found another MMO (ATITD) which is taking up my time, which is probably having an effect too . I'll probably get back to it after the hell of xmas retail has died down.

No, in fact I'm awful at managing a pet. Easychord takes about 10 minutes spamming kill command before he realises that the pet died long ago.
