Ok, I bought the DVD today and watched it this evening.  Can someone please tell me what the hell it was about?  How did all the machines start dropping dead?  I'm sure my DVD is faulty and there's half the movie missing  ;)

Here's an idea, watch the movie with the sound on, especially the bit at the beginning and end where it is pretty much spelled out.

Basically, humans evolved on this planet. We have evolved natural defences to many diseases and bacteria and all that stuff which nature throws at us. Aliens who just turn up one day do not have these defences against earthly nasties and get killed by something as simple as the common cold.

Harsh. It has moments of absolute brilliance, flawed as it is.

I do agree. I think the first 30 minutes are some of the most exciting I've ever sat through in a blockbuster. It's unfortunate that it had to be updated to the modern day, though, because a lot of the plot doesn't make sense in light of things like subways and, er, science.

Science? What, was science different back in the 19th century then?

Or to put it in simpler terms, all the aliens were HIV+

Except with completely different physiology they'd wouldn't get affected by earth disases at all.

Imagine that the other way round with humans landing on an alien planet and eating the inhabitants .. would we be immune to any pathogens? I doubt it. So why should the aliens in WOTW be immune to the ones on Earth?

i just finished an essay on the book. The book's a bit crap, as is the first film (haven't seen the new one).

Sod off.

I invented Mars, the planet, you know. Before I came along there was a big bloody empty spot in the sky. I went around sticking fucking ginger biscuit crumbs over those big arsed telescopes all the posh nobs have and they only went and fell for it didn't they.

If it weren't for me your favourite malty chocolate bars would never have been invented and you would be without enhancement for your pitiful attempts at working, resting and playing.
