Star Wars Vs Firefly/serenity

People are actually discussing this??

Star Wars v Serenity??

What madness is this??

Anyone who says that Serenity is better than Star Wars simply wasn't there in the beginning and has no idea what it was truly like.

I don't really stand on either side of the fence for this one, I loved them both. However, to say that if you prefer Serenity it's because you weren't 'there at the beginning' to me that implies SW is favoured because of the hype, buzz and excitement generated by being a kid when they were first released.

I took the question to mean cinematically which is better, because if you were a kid when SW first hit nothing will ever compare to the childish glee which you greeted the Original Trilogy

ORIGINAL TRILOGY

Why cant spastics grasp this?

So have you seen Firefly, then?

I haven't seen it, so I can't say. But I'm bored of people who get offended by people using 'their' Star Wars as a criticising point as if it's the be-all, end-all of, well, everything. It isn't.

Exactly. Star Wars was a revolution, a phenomnem (sic) in it's time. I wasn't even born in '77 so how could it effect me in the same way?

I'll say it with some courage - the OT for me is just 3 very decent Sci-Fi movies. Nothing more, nothing less. The less said about the prequels the better.

For me, Firefly/Serenity means more.

Alex W is right though.

Edit: Basically what Oli said.

Totally agree

Just because you were around when SW OT came out doesn't make it a better film it just means you have fonder memories.

For me Firefly/Serenity will always be special as I discovered it for myself on DVD then waited patiently for the film and even managed to go to the premier in Edinburgh.

I know I'll be telling the grandkids about the time I made an arse of myself during a post-premiere sing-along.

I told Mrs Oli that the person who asked for a sing song posted on a games forum i frequent. After she stopped laughing at the idea of frequenting a forum, she said it was 'really fucking geeky'

Sorry

It was the best night ever. Ever

I so nearly got Jason Biggs autograph, but some fat guy elbowed me in the gob then shouted something which made Biggsy do one

Thats what this is all about though, Joss Whedon's minions just wanking over the guys stuff again. Bollox.

There's a lot of people who like Firefly/Serenity DESPITE the fact it's from Whedon. It's not just Whedon's "minions" you know. I really think some people hate it just because it's from Whedon and they didn't like Buffy. Shame on those people.

Conversely, I could say "a load of old timers with nostalgic belief that some mediocre films are more than they really are."

For the record, I'm an old timer, I love(d) the original trilogy (and thought the prequels were shit). Firefly/Serentiy was the first show/movie to recreate the same feeling I had when I watched Star Wars as a kid (the feeling I wanted to get from the prequels, but no chance). Getting completely lost in a whole different universe full of danger, love and charm created by people with an immense passion for the subject.

For the record, Buffy bored my cunt off, Angel was for 15-year-old girls and Alien: Resurrection dry-humped my favourite film series. Whedon, frankly, did an incredible job making a show I actually love. A number of my friends who I got into Firefly also hate his previous work with rare passion, and a few of my mates who liked Buffy and Angle don't think Firefly is any cop.

Han is basically a homogenisation of all the serial heroes George Lucas saw as a kid. He's cool and all, but honestly, he's not got much going on. He's got better lines, mind, a bit more of a roguishness and is ultimately Whedon's inspiration for Mal.

Mal is slightly less likeable, but a bit more three-dimensional. He's got more than the daft childish Han-Leia interplay with Inara for a start; it's no wonder non-geekboys actually relate to the character. But he's a bit of a tit sometimes.

All the same, if SW wasn't an abject fanboy wankathon big enough to out-wank the entire Whedon output ten times over, and Whedon fanboys weren't ten times as fat and/or scary as Wars fans, an objective discussion could, perhaps, be formed, but let's face it, it ain't happening.

If people are going to bring Whedons back catalogue into it, I'll stack the worst episode of Buffy up against Howard the Duck, Willow, or Eps1-3. And I don't even like Buffy.

The problem with the "genius" of Star Wars is that it only exists in the fans heads. You can't see it on the screen. Noone, and I mean noone else would have let another director effectively go back, shit all over the original trilogy by adding superfluous rubbish, completely screw the plot over and still turn up to be royally buttfucked at a midnight showing of Episode III.

Star Wars doesn't have love poured into it by its maker. Its memorable bits are accident, rather than design. Its all about waffling about some fake shared memory about the Star Destroyer hoving into view in 1977.

Star Wars is an upside-down pyramid, with a vast army of merchandise sold on the back of a tiny, tiny film.

Firefly has a heart and a soul.

Oh, and Mal would take Solo any day.

It would seem there is more debate on this subject than what was first assumed.

I believe, that, while Star Wars was obviously more revolutionary, if someone with no prior knowledge to either, were to objectively view both Star Wars and Firefly/Serenity today, Firefly would simply be the better one.

Surely Episode 1- 3 show Lucas cant write or direct for shit and that Star Wars was a fluke. And as for Whedons fans, of which i am a big one, wanking over everything he does Star Wars fans are just a sickening, but Star Wars is "cool" though innit.

I agree with Afterbirth. I like Firefly and Serenity, and I think recently they're amongst the top sci-fi franchises going, but comparing Serenity to Star Wars isn't possible in my opinion - first off due to Star Wars' revolutionary and trendsetting nature, and secondly, due to the difference of format (film/tv series).

Eh? Didn’t you start this topic?
