Peter Kay's Dvd Rip Off

Peter Kays standup has never been good. What he is good at, is connecting wiht a live audience and making sure they all have a good time. That doesn't translate to a standup video, not that standup translates well to video - live a good concert, it has to be fucking immense to get the atmosphere across through the screen.

Comedian does same material on same tour shocker - blimey, I'm doing gags I first wrote four years ago. Happens all the time.

Anyway, save money on the video and generate your own Peter Kay routine

Same tour? You're kidding?

Bolton DVD released 10th November 2003

Manchester DVD released 15th November 2005

Material - Identical

I write more material than that. I know people reuse stuff, you have to really but when you are doing a sell out tour on the back of a mammoth selling DVD I really think it's cheeky and plain sloppy to do the sell out tour with a near identical routine

He must be short of money for his new baby! ummm, doubt it!

Mum wants a bungalow! :D

I've got both the Top of the Tower and Bolton Albert Halls DVDs, watch them all the time and they always crack me up something rotten, I wont hear a bad word said against them.

Pity about the new DVD, but it's been shown on TV before so no surprises on my end.

Released at different times, but filmed on the same tour, weren't they?

And thats why I didn't listen to Sexie before I went to see Izzard at the MEN.

Of the acts you lot will have heard of, only Ross Noble genuinely improvises the majority of his material.

Get you

'Us lot' are only familiar with Ross Noble, Peter Kay and Russ Abbott to be honest

I didn't say he should improvise just do a different routine, I always thought the two DVDs were on different tours or at least filmed 6 months apart otherwise whats the point?

The other point I made was not just the two DVD's being the same but PEter Kay recycling the same observations for close to 5 years - it's fucking lazy

OK, so I phrased that very badly, sorry. I could name a couple of excellent improvisers that it is unlikely you'll have heard of (Mick Ferry? Martin Bigpig?) but as a gigging comic I know them well but they're too unknown out in the big, wide world.

You'll never find me defending the "quality" of his material. I thought Max and Paddy was a great example of how "good" a writer he was, because it was Phoenix Nights without Spikey and Fitzmaurice and suffered badly as a consequence.

As for chasing the almighty pound note, like Jack Dee before him, Kay is happy to advertise beer, without touching a drop himself.

The best bit about this thread is the 'unknown' comedians bitching about the 'very known' comedian.

Mind you, some truth in this here. Kay does seem to be coasting and Max & Paddy was good - not great.

I never tire of watching Phoenix Nights and just hope they can capture the magic again if they do a third series.

Oh yeah: "Hey, me mum hates joypads! Yeah! joypads! I know!! "

Is wrong. I'm not an unknown comedian, or a wannabe, or anything else. It's just something i've tried a few times that I enjoyed and I got a good reception but I am too lazy to continue really.

Phoenix Nights was top draw, and I used to enjoy Peter Kays stand up routine, but the fact he is repeating the same material in everything he does is insulting to his audience really. Don't forget he was on about bloody garlic bread in Phoenix Nights

I was actually serious with my post. Can you share a bit of your material on here? I know it may not come over like it would on stage, but give it a go, eh?

I just know I'm going to regret this... from my fourth ever gig in January 2002. So its bloody old, especially for topical stuff. Its about the war in Afghanistan. Ropey as fuck.

Clicky

And slagging Kay out of professional jealousy? Oh, please. Thats like saying noone can call Westlife shit because they've themselves have not had a No 1 record.

See one of my gigs (I'm doing a charity gig at Glass, Fallowfield, Manchester 8pm tomorrow) and then judge.

Otherwise, let me know where you are and I'll hunt you down^W^W^W let you know when I'm in the area, as it were.

Sounds like a tough crowd. I don't really go for political/war stuff, so it's a bit wasted on me. But credit to you for posting that up.

Your go now, oli. If you don't have any mp3s just type some of your stuff up.

I really don't think typing stuff out is really going to do it justice - if i had mp3s they would go up indeed

We shall see

Way before that, even. The inclusion of that gag in Phoenix Nights was a little tip of the hat to the fans that had 'discovered' his stand up before that show was on the air.

Phoenix Nights was superb, and I thought you could tell certain lines in Early Doors (also brilliant) that he had contributed. However, I only managed one full episode of Max and Paddy. It was just so lifeless and lazy.

As for his stand up, I managed to catch him shortly before That Peter Kay Thing hit Channel 4 and thought he was great. Relatively lazy obervational comedy, granted, but it worked – and most importantly he came across as genuinely likable. I don't get that from him now; he just seems arrogant in interviews, and as has been mentioned already, there's only so many times you can recycle the same material before people start to catch on.

I take Plissken's point about using the same material on the same tour; it's not as if you boo your favourite bands for playing a song you've heard before. However, he also mentioned Eddie Izzard – I went to see him live during his Circle tour and was disappointed to find him using the exact same routine I'd already seen from the Dressed To Kill tour of the US. Which wasn't particularly good in the first place.
