Phoenix Nights to rise again

Julia Day

Thursday November 10, 2005

Peter Kay is planning a new series of his popular northern nightclub comedy Phoenix Nights and is contemplating turning the show into a feature film.

Kay is writing down ideas for a third series for Channel 4 and admitted he may also commit the caustic, wheelchair-bound club owner Brian Potter and his motley crew of incompetents to celluloid.

"It's one of those things where I'm just going to wait until the moment is right and I've got enough funny stuff. Then off we go again," Kay said an interview on BBC digital radio service 6 Music.

Kay made two series of Phoenix Nights, which have proved a hit on DVD. This year he followed them up with a spin-off series, Max and Paddy's Road to Nowhere, in which the two Phoenix Club bouncers went on the run in a camper van.

However, fans of the show will have to wait a little while for a third series - Kay's next project for Channel 4 is a new comedy likely to be on air next year. This show is also believed to be based in his native north-west.

Kay added: "I'm thinking of doing a film of Phoenix Nights but I don't know. They're all right these British films but, if you open the same weekend as Tomb Raider, you're knackered. So I might wait and see. Who knows?"

The comedian and actor also talked of culling some characters. "Some of the cast will have to be killed off. Like when [producer] Brian Park came into Corrie and got rid of them all... except David Platt!" he said.

Several UK TV comedy series have made the jump to the big screen. The League of Gentlemen's Apocalypse was released earlier this year and Rowan Atkinson's Mr Bean begame Bean: the Ultimate Disaster Movie in 1997.

The Kay interview will be broadcast on the 6 Music Selector on Wednesday December 14.

The first couple of Max & Paddy episodes were ok then it went downhill a bit. A third series of PN could be great although I would hope he doesn't cull too many characters, some of the minor parts are comedy gold. Although I expect Spencer will be one of those not returning. Not sure about a film version though.

What happened to series two of Max and Paddy? I thought I heard a few months back it was starting "next week", but then never saw mention of it again.

I didn't watch it, but I thought it was on.

I was confused thinking it was a repeat of the first series and didn't bother, then realised it was the second series.

Unless I wasn't confused and it was the first series, which makes me really confused now as I figured it was the second.

Why no Spencer?

Is he too big for it now?

If you get the chance listen to the commentaries on the series two DVD, there doesn't appear to be much love lost between Peter Kay and the rest of the cast and Daniel (? whatever his name is*) who plays Spencer. Apparently due to Kitson's attitude after winning a Perrier award.

*Edit: Kitson?

Peter Kay does comes across a bit, well, pompous now. All the fame must have gone to his head. I don't think Kay gets on that well with most of the original team, and unless Dave Spikey writes most of it, it will be a catchphrase packed, Nuts magazine friendly, lad comedy like Max & Paddy.

They have written it, but have no date set for filming it yet ... next thing on the agenda is a Max and Paddy fitness dvd which is due out early 2006.

I thought the same thing. I thought the second series was starting then they only showed the 1st series. Confusing :D

Didn't Kay and Spikey have a falling out as well because Kay refused to let Spikey use character stuff from Phoenix Nights in his standup routine?

No. From Chortle

Unfortunately I doubt it. Peter Kay decided to take the Max And Paddy route after Series 2 and has shown little inclination to return to the Phoenix since and let’s face it, we can’t do it without him!

I would have loved to have done a third series though, we had loads of ideas and I’m certain it would have been as good as the first two. I think that we may have left it too long now, it’s always hard to return to a comedy when there has been such a long gap in between.

I’d be very interested in doing a Christmas special , I think the Phoenix would be a perfect place to set a festive story in for all sorts of reasons but again we may have left it too late and logistically getting everybody back together might prove impossible and we wouldn’t want to do it without our main characters.

Without Spikey the writing was stilted. Max & Paddy missed the more family orientated gags, and suffered as a result. My parents love Phoenix Nights but can't stand M&P. The jokes are too brash and crude, and there were no periferal characters that could compete with favourites such as Spencer, Jerry St. Clare and Ray Von. It was a breath of fresh air when Potter turned up in the prison episode.

I really hope they don't do series 3, or series 2 of M&P either to be honest. It would be nice to see Kay do something different instead of recycling old material from 'That Peter Kay Thing'.

It'll be interesting to see how many of the cast want nothing to do with a third series. I know that Kitson wasn't the only one to be annoyed that Kay was only one of the three main writers of Phoenix Nights, but he's the one that gets all of the credit. Even the DVD case calls the show "Peter Kay's Phoenix Nights".

Also note the rather nasty digs at Dave Spikey in the 'prison' episode of Max and Paddy, with the references to "Jerry St Clair's 60th birthday" and using a stand-in for his character.

Dave Spikey was in M&P, he was getting hosed down at the Phoenix Club. I just don't think they'll do another series, there's too much friction. Chances are they'll do a Max and Paddy style spin off starring Brian Potter. Peter Kay loves that character, so if PN doesn't get another spin, he'll be resurected somehow.
